  1. I'll admit, Orlov has been better lately, but it doesn't make up for the insane number of games that he's single-handedly lost us this year. I'd say probably 10+ games in the regular season were decided by one or more goals given up by his direct actions. And I don't mean he's on the ice for a shot that just goes in, I mean coughing up multiple breakaways at the blue line, getting burned by opponents, missing assignments, badly timed pinches that result in Chatfield alone on a two-on-one, you name it. He's been absolutely unusable for most of 2025. Whether it's finally getting over a lingering injury, or just trying harder, he does seem to be limiting the big mistakes so far in the playoffs, but it's only a matter of time until he costs us a game, and his offensive upside has been almost zero for a while now (other than the assist on the shorthanded goal today, but it was a pass out of their own zone, Martinook was who made that goal).

Realistically, it'll probably be Sean Walker coming out of the lineup for Nikishin to come in, but the better idea would be taking out Orlov. He's just too much of a defensive liability and we win games on our tight checking and defense that doesn't tend to make major mistakes. Gaffes like his totally let the air out of the team. They've been grinding all game for a slim lead, finally get it, and then Orlov just gifts the other team a goal in the form of a neutral zone giveaway or missing a pass at the blue line and not being fast enough to fix his mistake. If it weren't for Chatfield being his defensive partner, things would be even worse.

In any case, I hope we see Nikishin out on the ice soon. Nikishin had the best plus/minus and the most assists of any player in the KHL last year, as well as most goals and assists by a defenseman in the KHL for two years. 17 goals and 29 assists for 46 points in 61 games is just insane for a 23-year-old, 6'4", 220 lb defenseman. He's been playing with grown men for going on five years. He's ready for the show.

  2. Good review. I also hate the fact that we lost Pesce. He was (and still is) a great player.

  3. Canes need to win on the road, since their road record during the season shows that they likely won't

  4. Refs are just going to be inconsistent.
If the Canes lose a game, I just leave them out of it. Blaming them for a loss is not worth it.

  5. Devils have 2 goals in 2 games. Frankly, they seem lucky to even have 2 given how badly they've gotten outplayed in these first 2 games. Jack Hughes' absence is killing them.

  6. So we've won both home games handily, as expected. Now comes the real test, can we get it done on the road in a hostile environment?

  7. Sometimes your team gets decimated by the start of the playoffs which makes it a nearly impossible task.
Maybe the Devils can make a series out of it still, but otherwise be glad for a decent progress on the year overall, and a return to the playoffs.

  8. Jersey might as well have dusted off their golf clubs after Jack went down. This series was about as good a bet for a sweep as you'll ever see!

  9. Why do you act like the Hurricanes fans are the only fans that chant “refs you suck”. You bring it up actually every review. I literally hear the same thing at Leafs games and every other team. We canes fans can feel the “ poverty franchise” attitude you have for us and it’s why we some of us give you a hard time.

  10. Burns didnt get called for a headbutt, NJ should have had a 5 PP to start the 3rd, changed the game on a non call!

  11. Never saw the Devils as likely winners if this from the start. But hoping for at least one win, preferably push it to a game 6 or 7 (just wishful thinking – I dont see that happening)

  12. As a Devils fan, I had Carolina winning the series 4-1. I just felt, based on the regular season, that the system Carolina plays poses a matchup problem for the Devils. All season, the Devils seemed to be a team that, if you can push them to the outside, they would struggle to develop chances and penetrate the high scoring areas. You saw this against teams like Carolina, Kings, Avalanche, etc. This series seems to be following suit. As you noted, the Devils played better in this game but they need to figure out how to bring their game up another level. Their pace and toughness isn't matching Carolina so, unless Markstrom steals a game or two, I still don't see this series going past Game 5.

  13. That game last night was an anomaly for Pesce. As a Canes fan, I'm glad he's gone. I never understood the praise he got. Please stop going on about the fans being upset about the refs missing a call. It happens in every arena.

  14. This series has gone exactly as expected so far. NJD playing fine, but just cannot keep up with the level of firepower that is out of their lineup.

  15. As a Devils fan I never thought we could win.

No mention of Burns headbutting Meier though? SMH

  16. The problem is Orlov is either phenomenal or a bottom 10 d in the league. You can’t have that with someone making 7 mil a year

  17. Carolina has huge issues generating goals AGAIN. If they don't get one on the road, wait for Jack Hughes to come back game 6 or 7. Aho is ghosted again

  18. No, Shannon, Orlov is not fine. He’s not justifying his contract and thankfully he’s off our books after this season

  19. Man, I do miss Pesce a lot. Noeson too while we are at it. Both really hard workers.

  20. Orlov is sometimes fine and other times awful. I counted 3 damning turnovers from bad passes from him in the first, and otherwise he was average barring 1 or 2 good moments. Yeah he's a vet with experience, and sometimes he shows out, but him and Burns are really bad about turnovers. Oftentimes they're out of position, making bad turnovers, and other plays that their pairings (Chatfield and Slavin) have to cover for. Don't hate them, and I wouldn't dare bring in Nikishin for a playoff game unless we were injured or comfortably ahead, but I am glad we are replacing them.

  21. It is very important that the crowd remind the Refs how much they suck

  22. I felt prior to the series, like most, that Carolina would win. They are the better team, have home ice, have the Devils number in the playoffs, and the devils are without their best player. That being said, The series isn’t over. Carolina had only 9 losses at home and 2nd best home record behind the Kings. They held serve at home as they should. If they didn’t win both at home they would be in trouble as they have a terrible road record. You are not in trouble in a 7 game series until you lose a game at home. The Devils slim path to series victory still is to win 1 game in Carolina and win their home games. Still very doable. Will Carolina win, probably, but the series isn’t over.
