  1. As well as a lot of things went in the way of improving I cannot stress enough how often Blackwood kept the Sharks in games they had no business being in or even straight up stole games. We simply did not deserve that man and I hope he wins a cup. As soon as Granlund and Blackwood were dealt the while foundation of the team crumbled after the deadline.

  2. The draft should not be based on standings. The Sharks have been tanking with intent, just like the Oilers were doing ten years ago. It is cheating, as far as I am concerned.

  3. The most Sharks thing the Sharks could do is make the playoffs next year out of nowhere because reasons.

  4. We really should see some improvements next year, I don't think they are gonna be stuck in an eternal rebuild like the Sabres

  5. Two stats that really jumped out at me through the year for the Sharks: 1) the Sharks this year had 11 more games where they lost by 1 or 2 points than they did the year prior (last i checked now than half their losses were either 1 point games or 1 plus empty netters), and 2) with Blackwood on the team this year, their PK was over 80% and on the top 10 in the league, without him they were dead last in the league. I take that to mean Askarov and a solid partner for him will be an amazing step up next year.

  6. SJ makes the Playoffs again before Buffalo, and Pegula had better be ran out of town on a rail. But despite a plethora of talented youth, going from 19 wins to 20 and then Playoffs (by 2028) would be some Miracle Max magic.

  7. If I were MG I'd go out and sign one top F talent for a couple years, like a Marchand. Same on D. With their cap space money is no object. However, these players would be invaluable for the kids to play with and observe by example. Imagine what Celebrini and Smith could learn from a Marchand. Same on the D. This would be a developmental strategy. The cap space will remain quite a while given the numbers of ELCs and RFAs with years left on them.
These are players who could sit down with Warsofsky and discuss training and development, set plays, and report on weaknesses that perhaps W has missed. Or just sit down with players individually and talk about things like how to beat a goalie.

  8. Celebrini is really good on offense and he projects to be at least a solid if not good defender as well. Going to be a superstar some day

  9. no team should rebuild so badly like Sharks did, they got rid of Superstars pavelski, hertl for no reason, look how many years they at the bottom

  10. If the Sharks wanted they could offer Mitch Marner $15 M and see what happens.

  11. Not sure why Chernyshov wasn't mentioned in the upcoming. He'll be better than Bystedt I think.

  12. 2-4 years is when I can see competition from the Sharks again. Cap space will be freed up a little bit because the Burns payout is over, but the Karlsson and Hertl payouts are still there (another 3 years for Karlsson and a decade for Hertl.) Vlasic is done after this year for sure, so I can see Ferraro being their blue line guy for a while. Couture despite retiring from injury will still be paid the last two years of his contract which sucks for cap purposes. Defense and goaltending is a must for the draft. I would love to see the Round 1 pick be a defensemen or a goaltender (depending on who's available of course) Building around Celebrini, Smith, and Eklund is the right thing to do, Grier better not screw this up like how Doug Wilson screwed over the team of the 2000's 2010's that SHOULD HAVE won a Stanley Cup.

  13. Celebrini missed 12 games earlier in the season. It would be interesting to see where the Calder race would be now had he not missed those games.

  14. nooo i always tell people blackwood is a good goalie bit inconsistent but he was good in san jose and sure in a good team his stats looks fantastic bc he actually have a good defense and good offense in front of him also idk should have put wennberg as vet instead of eklund lol hes only 22 years old its not like he hit his peak…

  15. If I heard right that you're doing every team then damn, appreciate the hard work dude!

  16. season before this one, the losses were a lot more devastating than the losses this most recent season which at least felt competitive. That's a big improvement even if the record doesnt 100 percent showcase it.

I'm very positive on the sharks near future and honestly, just super impressed with GM MG. Doing a fantastic job.

  17. Sharks offseason prirorities IMO:
    -Weaponize cap space
    -Insulate the youth
-Add a veteran tandem netminder to take pressure off Askarov

  18. Will probably be another rough season next year, but it's trending in the right direction.

As for what they'll do with the cap space, maybe they could lure someone like Marner, but I'm all for Grier using cap space to take on another bad contract to acquire draft capital and hopefully rehabilitate the player's value and either keep the player or trade him for more draft capital like with Walman.

  19. If they win the draft lottery I can see pressure get higher after next season just cause that’s 2 1st overall picks back to back, both of whom are projected to be very very good(not selling them short) but if they don’t I could easily say this might take another 2 even 3 years before we really see this team back in wild card contention.

  20. This rebuild is not working. They will be the worst team in the league for at least 2 more years with no solid vets to build around and help develop the kids. The defense is also terrible and trading Walman was short cited

  21. Eklund is 22… this was his second full season. Hardly a veteran lol – though I'm happy you talked about a Swede 🙂

  22. Igor Chernyshov missed half the season, and then blew up in the OHL, 2+pts per game. He looked like he had an NHL game and could well be the 1st to become a full-time NHLer in the prospect pool. Appreciate the Jack Thompson mention, he was sneaky good for a guy that age. The Sharks blue line isn't good and the right side is still massively lacking. Even Schaefer, on his own, won't change that. Warsofsky was a genuinely good coach. Worth noting, the roster had enormous turnover. The team traded (and yes, each of these is a separate player): their top d-man, top +/- guy, top face-off guy, top scoring center, top goalie. Late in the season, it was hit by a ton of injuries (especially on the already problematic d-group).

Shannon, you had it exactly right. The Sharks need to spend 1 more season in the wilderness. Not more, not less. Most prospects take time and there's no point rushing them. For all the recent bad seasons, this will only be their 4th time drafting in the top 10. Grier has done a wonderful job with the prospect pipeline, time is the essential ingredient.

  23. Jack Thompson is Jack Johnson on FBI witness protection, hiding in a San Jose houseboat 😆

  24. Blackwood this season was the best goalkeeping they've had since Jones 2016. That's the reason he was traded. They traded Ceci and Walman, their best defensemen, Granlund their best forward (after Celebrini) and their goalie. Zetterlund was also a big loss. It's a miracle that they could still win games.
Rutta actually played really well after returning from injury.

  25. I watched almost every Sharks game this season. In spite of their record, they were worth watching. Can't say the same about last season.

Celebrini is the real thing. So is Smith.

The real revelation for me was Colin Graf. Didn't see that one coming.

I expect he's likely to be in the starting lineup unless something goes sideways.

If the Sharks can sniff out a.500 season in 25-26, I'll be happy. Anything beyond that, I'll be ecstatic.

  26. I never liked Gorgiev because I cant stan the Avs, and im not saying he's great or even top 30, but this defense was atrocious. It was horrendous and soft. In the years to come, these young kids will all get stronger and tougher. It was clear to see they were bullied in front of their own net all season. They need some tough dudes on defense to come in and instill some physicality in all the young guys.

  27. Grier did trade off all the veteran talent before the trade deadline for future picks.

  28. Sharks would have been much better if the didn’t trade most of their good players. If Blackwood, wallman, zetterlund, granlund were still there they would have been much better

  29. As silly as it sounds to make excuses for the worst team in the league, I really think there are a few aspects that folks who don't regularly watch the team wouldn't really think of.

-As you mentioned, goaltending was a huge issue after the Blackwood trade and Askarov injury; it's impossibly to quantify just how hilariously bad Georgiev was. Finding a quality 1B vet goalie (Jake Allen would obviously be ideal) to tandem with Askarov will solve a lot of problems for this team
-Grier really stripped the team down to the studs again before the deadline, with some expected trades (Ceci, Granlund, Sturm, Vanecek) and some shockers (Zetterlund, Walman). Yet the metrics weren't actually all that bad post-deadline until injuries hit
-Injuries to an already shallow D-core in the last dozen games didn't help. Our D was quite literally Liljegren and a bunch of AHLers for the last several games once Ferraro and Mukhamadullin got hurt
-Special teams, especially the PK, were a mess. Lots of game would be pretty even and then the Sharks would take a bad penalty and give up a back-breaking goal against to lose. Fixing that up will go a long way.
-I can't count how many games the Sharks were leading in the third and then somehow managed to lose in regulation. It was honestly a tanking masterpiece. As the kids get older and learn to close games, that'll improve naturally.

    Offseason shopping list:
    1B goaltender
Two top-4 D (one who can run a PP, ideally)
A middle-six winger who can play C in a pinch in case Smith falters when moved back to C
-One Matthew Schaefer, please and thanks 🤞

    Good recap, buddy!

  30. Despite a last place finish, it's a whole culture change for the fans and team alike. I'm excited to see when they start making the push towards being a contender again, Mike Grier has done a great job with a rebuilding club thus far

  31. I actually feel disappointed with my nhl team this season as we drafted Celebrini we got a massive steal from Nashville in Askerov and I thought we would see improvements and yet we’re still where we were last year, the only silver lining was the Barracuda going back to the playoffs for the first time since 2019
