The governor of N.Y. wrote a letter to Bettman, complaining about canceling next year's all star game weekend in Long Island. Bettman apparently made up for it by giving the Islanders the 1st overall pick.
They are still guaranteed one of Martone, Hagens, Frondell, or Desnoyers which is a good spot. This pod is always so doom and gloom.

Can we all just acknowledge that the way they do the draft is dumb? Remember when they just made the team that won move up 3 spots? Why did they leave that?
The problem is instead of using the draft to help bad teams get better, it has to be "entertainment". No one on earth thinks the Islanders deserve the number 1 pick over San Jose, but in the name of "entertainment" let's have a lottery where teams that barely miss the playoffs can win it! This idea of entertainment is arbitrary. NFL doesn't do it. Baseball doesn't do it. The idiot NBA does it, so we have to do it? There are many ways the NHL can provide entertainment without screwing up the draft. Everyone just acts like "Oh well, this is the system!" It doesn't have to be the system though.
We could have entertainment by making the team that wins the Stanley Cup have to switch places with the worst team in the league. Wow! The Panthers had to swap with San Jose! What a dumb idea! But hey! Entertainment! Have random fans play goal each game for teams. Stupid idea, but wow, entertainment! The game is supposed to be entertaining, not the ins and outs of how the game works. If you want entertainment, have the GMs fight each other in UFC. Has nothing to do with anything, but wow, entertainment!
Get the idiot idea of entertainment out of the draft and use it for what it is for – helping bad teams get better. If you want to prevent tanking, leave in the original "1 team moves up 3 spots". That's what killed us in 2007. We were by far the worst team but lost the lottery and picked 2nd. No need to take every team that missed the playoffs and put them in this.
If we arent getting Frondell Martone or Desnoyers we are getting Hagan. Still in a great spot. I hope as we go the glass half empty from Russ changes. It takes away from listening. Yes their are things to improve but there are a lot of great things happening too
My biggest fear is that one of the main 6 will be available at 6 and Briere goes off script and picks McQueen who is out of the league in 4 years due to back problems. But hey! He's big! Maybe, just maybe, if McQueen doesn't have permanent injury problems, he can be a legit center. Instead of taking a guy who can be a legit #2 center, maybe weak #1 center, let's go for the project who might never play!
I'm sorry, I am just very bitter. I have been a Flyers fan for over 50 years and just want something good for a change. All I expect is something bad because I have 50 years of badness to rely on.
Michkov not winning the Calder is just motivation for him. In spite of my negativity, I think this is a good thing. He had a great season. Who cares if he wins the Calder.
It should only be the bottom 5 in the lottery. The other teams in the lottery were borderline playoff teams.
At 6 the Flyers should draft a good player because the gap between players in maybe top 8 is not huge aside of Matthew Schaefer 🏒🤔
The lottery ruined the NHL and it’s beyond stupid! Why can’t they just have it like the NFL? Who seems to think the islanders got #1 because they were snubbed next year for the all-star game.
With 3 picks in the first, if there is someone that they absolutely need to draft, can't they just package picks and move up a few spots?

As a Preds fan, I feel you're pain. We were THIRD in the bottom of the standings and yet we didn't move up at all… But back! I know it isn't, but it feels intentional and it feels like the same teams keep getting good things handed to them.

After the top 3, I'm not sure there is much of a difference between drafting 4, 5, or 6.
hate the lottery….not at all fair to the worst teams. agree with the comment that it should only be the bottom 5, or maybe just the worst 3, that have a shot at the first pick. Then they could expand it to the bottom 5 for the second pick. To have the Islanders and Utah move ahead of us (and Nashville) is absolutely a total miscarriage of fairness. I love hockey but the NHL is a mess in so many ways.

People making too much of this. Though I think this was fixed to a degree. Its almost impossible for 1 team to move up but 2. There is no way teams that almost made playoff have a chance at this. Its just insane but in the end the Flyers can make moves with all those picks. So SJ and Chi top 3 in what seems 5 years those teams should not be rewarded either
