As a Canucks fan, who only watches Canucks hockey (for some 10-15 years now, if not longer), it is always fascinating at this time of year to get the same old, same old from the Leafs and their fans (think Steve Dangle!), where to Toronto's credit, at least – with me being in Montreal – it is not as bad as the 1970s when they were often just simply terrible and basically a laughingstock franchise due to their ownership.

Leafs fans need to just breathe a bit again. I get it . Every year it's the same. But you could argue several of those years Dubas did absolutely NOTHING to help this team get that much better. As team who win the cup Tampa was going all in . Florida was going all in. Toronto sits back and grabs a couple depth players and calls it a day. To me this is the first year where this team has actually changed and received some help on defence and in goal.
I honestly think Berube and Treliving needs to sit down with Marner offer him the exact same contract as Nylander. 11.5×8 . If he wants the bragging rights go up to 11.65 if it gets the deal done. But that's as far as I go.
There's no way I'm paying Marner 13-14M. If this team wants to win there's just no way it can…
This is what I do this off-season..
Offer Marner 8×11.5M . Same as Nylander take it or leave it.
Offer Benett 8Mx7
Offer Tavares a purely defferred contract. 1.5M Base the rest deffered until he retires.
Sign Knies to a 3x5M bridge deal.
Ship out both Jarnkrok and Kampf as dumps.
Sign Lorentz to a 2 year 900k
Sign Nico Sturm as 4th line centre.
Then you're looking at a roster like
Knies-Matthews-Marner
MCmann-Tavares-Nylander
DDomi-Bennett-lorentz
Laughton-Sturm-whoever they throw in there for league min. ?
I think a line of Domi-Benett-Lorentz would be such a pestering line perfect for the playoffs.
Honestly I would love to see Morgan Reilly go as well. He played so well vs Ottawa . Ttanpa before that. But he does see to fold when the pressure is on as well. Like the first 3 goals scored were scored when he was on the ice.
Nit necessarily his fault… I just think for 7.5M…I'd rather use that on a real good defenceman like a Oleksuac and use the other 3M to help the depth of the team.
Leafs fans need to be careful what they wish for. Yes the Leafs haven't had success in the marner Era. However this guy does so much its going to be Impossible to replace. he's a very important piece of the PK. He's a very important piece of the PP he's a very important piece of the defense. And he scores 100pts. That's unheard of in the league.
I get his playoffs arnt the best. But it's not like the management really gave this team a PROPER chance to win. Name a year where they went all in like other teams to try and win.? There's something that happens to your physchy when you're continually trying your hardest constantly one of the top teams in the regular season. You watch all these other teams management go all in for their teams (including the teams they lose to) and dubas sits on his hands telling them they're not good enough and grabs a couple depth players and calls it a day. Leafs fans really underestimate what that does to players it really discourages players. This is the first year the team actually went out and actually got a meaningful piece in a way in bringing in carlo. They still needed a forward. They easily could have had rantanen for the playoffs. I would have much preffered to give up Cowan,a 1st a 2nd and grebby for rantanen even if it was for 1 push then giving up a first and grebby for a player who can't even play the position you got him for.
There's really zero reason why they sho7ldnt have got rantanen if all the package was was Stankoven and a couple firsts. You can't tell me a package of Cowan,Grebenkin and a couple firsts wouldn't Match that or exceed that.
My point is… The management needs to change on this team… and guess who's calling the shots…. Shanahan…. anytime this team has tried to go all in its been denied by Shanahan. They need to fire Shanahan. I don't know why people don't see he's the problem here.

This is a Shannahan problem. This is a Dubas issue even tho7gh he's not here Shannahan still is and when Dubas was here it was really shannahan calling the major shots…
This team was repeatedly told and shown they don't have what it takes to win. When other teams went all in.. when the leafs desperately needed goaltending they went out and got a 3rd string goalie believe it was like Rittich, when the leafs desperately needed a top pairing right shot defencman dubas and shannahan went out and got Schenn another year they go out and get a Giordano although solid… not what they needed. , When the leafs desperately needed a top 6 forward they were told they didn't play well enough in the last few ganes of the season so they didn't earn them going all in so the team again just picked up depth forwards like Blackwell, etc. Guys they really didn't need that wouldn't put them over the top. My point is this team deserves a chance to go all in… trade Cowan for that top 6 guy at the trade deadline… perhaps the leafs could have picked up Hagel that one year… he would have fit perfectly.

They lost to the Stanley cup champs, not a surprise at all….and they don’t have the grinders needed to win playoff games, they have players that care about personal stats and looking good.

Marner had to play game 7 with 2 injured players. Coach should have put him with Tavares. Leafs won't even be in the playoffs without Marner.

Funny that marner is a superstar when mathews is injured or on separate lines. ..pretty sure that mathews is more of a failed star thank marner

A leafs fan before to hosts were born- that is my fault. Mathews gives up much to easily- is that lack of heart- you tell me. He did not make the transition to captain very well. Management was premature in giving him this status. Marner by comparison has a presence on the ice and can be a great set up man. You can not have two players on the same line that sulk. Nylander could not play defense if his life depended on it, perhaps a few Bob Gainey videos would help with that. I have never seen a more selfish player. Play both ends of the ice. Berube coddled him early, and then could not pull him back. Reilly, I love the guy, but it is time for him to have a new change of scenery- the curse of buying a house in the NHL. Taveres, was the elder statements that shows he still has grit and smarts in his game. Knies, a players that should be groomed for the next captaincy. Hockey has not changed, hard work and grit win championships and Knies has shown that he has that kind of attitude. As they say in leafs land " there is always next year." Get rid of Shanahan.
