Poor Islanders, as a Leafs fan they are one of the very few franchises I can feel bad for. Carolina Hurricanes are the other, getting swept year after year cant be fun.

Remember when the leafs needed a president, gm and coach? suddenly the league introducted compensation for them, and as soon as they paid the picks, they scrapped that stupid rule.

The real culprit is MLSE, they only have themselves to blame. They go out and hire Shanahan with ZERO experience. That was a ridiculous move. Shanahan had ZERO connection to Leaf fans. Sure he had a great career but it wasn't in Toronto. Wendel Clark, Mats Sundin, Doug Gilmour and many others were just as prepared as Shanahan and were beloved by the fans. Then Shanahan makes his biggest mistake by hiring Dubass from the OHA instead of Hunter. Again, Dubasss comes into the job with ZERO experience and it showed with his overpaying of players that haven't accomplished anything and his dumb moves like trading the rugged Mason Marchment for undersized minor league Denis Malgin. Just a dumb organization from top to bottom.

As people are discussing Dubas here, as shanahans biggest error:
– Dubas cosplayed a management consultant with his glasses. He has a sports management degree from a university no one has ever heard of (brock). This is hardly the sign of a genius.
– his reputation was as an analytics whizz. So why did he build a top heavy high octane offensive team just as an impulse 13 year old would build in a simulation? Is employing 4 forwards who were top 10 draft pick for your ‘core’ really the sign of an analytics genius?
– he seems to have got his reputation as an analytics whizz by showing up at a junior team job interview with a binder full of paper. This is the Calvin and Hobbes way of looking smart. Between that and the glasses, he was all show.
– the guy then – in Toronto and Pittsburgh – splashed out on star signings that financially hamstring the teams: Tavares and karlsson. He also refused to move out players who would be with assets: marner, malkin.
– he doesn’t understand the playoffs. No focus on G or D. No awareness of the need for grit – Hyman and kadri both let go. And then he brought in not seasoned end of career champions to mentor the team, but perennial playoff no-shows and underachievers like Marleau and Thornton.
– he lost or at least badly strategised almost all signings. They should have let nylander lock himself out. They should have signed Matthews before marner to lock in a salary peak. Just a terrible negotiator.
– they never changed the system when the data suggested they should. They just kept running it back. This isn’t analytics. It is pure, unadulterated pride.
Dubas was finally let go. But his legacy remains.

Its official. MLSE announced shanahan is gone.
The shoe finally dropped and is long overdue.
His firing does not represent his on ice career in Detroit , where his prowess was simply brilliant.
There is some kind of detachment, some kind of disconnect with the upper management at MLSE . On any given year/season , they’ve had great player’s and great coach’s.
Brendan Shanahan, personally, is no slouch , but still, he didn’t get the job done as President , not even close.
You now have a time tested and proven head coach. A Stanley Cup winner. The culture within the Maple Leafs organisation has to reflect an atmosphere of a winning , playoff bound , Stanley Cup finals team or winner.
