1. Maybe look a relocating teams that are in less than ideal markets, that have antiquated arena without a planned replacement, declining population or don’t make the playoffs in 14 years. Houston has 20,000 Canadian and 80,000 Russians alone could support hockey. Let alone the other $6M people that live in the area.

  2. No more multi-person ownership groups who are too busy fighting over their basketball team to care one whit about their hockey team. THAT is the NUMBER ONE why the Thrashers didn't work. That was the start of the Thrashers decline, and it started the domino effect that eventually resulted in the Winnipeg Jets.

  3. i am wondering this if it's 1 ,2,3,4 teams how will they add them 1 at a time over so many years or 2 at a time and how many they add and it maybe not be for awhile maybe closer to the 2030s .

  4. It works by getting the Buffalo Sabres to have arena troubles, then moving to Atlanta as a last resort

  5. The league is as big or bigger than the other North American pro leagues BUT it has SEVERAL less US teams than any of the other leagues. The NHL WANTS to be in all the major US media markets. That means Atlanta. That means Houston. That means Phoenix. After that, it becomes a bit of a crap shoot. It could be Quebec City if they come up with an owner that the league would accept… or it could be Kansas City or San Diego or Milwaukee or Portland or New Orleans. Who knows.

  6. you actually need to go where there's a Hockey culture, will Houston or Atlanta fanbase stay loyal when their team is doing badly NHL is already very competitive i think AHL can expand in the South but NHL needs a serious fanbase the fact that Wisconsin doesn't get talked about enough is weird

  7. If anymore teams join the league I might be done as I feel the NHL is diluted and the product has gone stale plus right now I'm putting all my energy in the PWHL which I have loved since day 1

  8. If they do an expansion I see Houston first seeing how they have an already established stadium that could bring a team in 2026 and ATL would get in 2027. After that I see NOLA, SD, OKC, Omaha, Milwaukee, Cincinnati, Oakland, Portland. AZ could be better with relocating team that’s willing to go there, only way I see the public funds without push back is if the owner and league pay at least half the new stadium cost

  9. Um, Atlanta has failed out of the NHL twice. Give it a rest. Stop trying to make Atlanta in the NHL happen. It is not going to happen.

  10. Missing NHL Main Ingredient: 1.5 million middle to upper class European descent inhabitants living within 30 minutes of the planned arena.

  11. With the Florida Panthers and Carolina Hurricanes in the Eastern conference finals and other recent success of the Tampa Bay Lightning and Nashville Predators in the the south … Atlanta is currently the hole in the donut. While greater Las Vegas area is the 24th in the US, the greater Atlanta area is ranked 6th, which includes a lot of damn yankees.

It all begins with good ownership. And if Atlanta has a Bill Foley type, it will happen.

Houston and Atlanta are just a matter of time as the Texas and Southern markets still have a lot of untapped viewers.

  12. But it's the chicken and the egg. Is it fair for a group to build a new NHL arena but then get declined an expansion? Look at Quebec's Videotron Center. There are other reasons with Quebec but just an example.

As far as sharing expansion fees. I think it depends on some agreements. Like when Seattle paid the expansion fee it was only shared with 30 teams. Vegas wasn't included. My guess if they approve of the 4 new teams but 2 come in, the 35 and 36th expansion fee would only be shared with the 32 teams.

  13. The NHL will eventually go to 36 teams when each city is ready. Houston, Atlanta, Phoenix and 1 other team up for grabs. It won't be an open call for bids like they did when they went to Las Vegas. When they did that expansion, only Vegas and Quebec City submitted bids instead of the 6 -7 cities they were expecting and the NHL was embarrassed. It will be more like when they announced the Seattle team. No open bidding process, just simply announcing "We are expanding to this city, and here are the owners." type of thing.

  14. I think if the nhl expands past 32 they should do away with divisions and just have the 2 conference of 17 teams. Then they could revisit divisions if they add more teams

  15. Washington DC is on their third MLB franchise, and there was an existing MLB team closer to DC than any other NHL franchise. I know baseball and hockey are different sports, and baseball is bigger in the US than hockey. But the Nordiques left Canada for the US, and the Avalanche won a Stanley Cup after the move. The right team with the right owners will get the support. The Braves won't be leaving Atlanta, and the Falcons won't either. But I could see the Hawks leaving if at some point Atlanta decides they don't want to build a dedicated basketball arena downtown when Hawks ownership wants a new arena. Or the Hawks leave downtown Atlanta like the Braves did.

  16. Atlanta has had two chances, there are several cities that would be much better for expansion than Atlanta.
