6"2", 200+ pounds is a decent size, so hopefully he'll be a more physical presence that the Rangers need. Good shooter in the slot as well. Most sources project him to be a middle 6 player. Not too bad I guess. If he does well, I think he might wind up as trade bait if the Rangers are in the hunt.
As you can see by these clips of Spencer defense is a forgotten 'art' in the OHL.
It wasn't in the 1st round so it doesn't have the same magnitude, but another LW drafted as the first pick is absolutely hilarious. Drury's bingo card is safe! LW, BU, or NTDP.
Before the 2nd round started EJ Radek was talking to an analytics type guy, who started right off expressing disbelief that Spence wasn't drafted in the 1st round. He expressed the view that whomever drafted him in the second round was getting a steal for sure. The ex Florida head scout on the TV panel said Spence was yin & yang stating that when he was good he was very good & when he was bad he intimated a lack of effort occasionally(2 of 8 games where he watched Spence). What I love is that he is really good along the boards & guys that win battles along the boards are invaluable. Also described as an aggressive forechecker who disrupts play coming out of the zone. That's the Florida model. Pretty good pick it seems. Still can't understand why Drury gave up that #12 pick!
