Marks my words. He will say "I called some GMs, and nothing was available, or it was too expensive, so here we are." The usual.
That's it? Sure hope there are some trades coming, otherwise, this is a 7th place team.
Two years contracts let him buyout any whiffs next season. Not huge money so it won't hurt freeing to free up a spot up next season for FAs worth spending on. The few FAs worth spending on wanted to sign with teams that are closer to contenders than hopefuls. The old farts on D will be off of the books too. Easier to make a swing when they have cap during the season if they are close.
The Wings already made a big move picking up Gibson. How is it that people keep forgetting anything that happens if it isn’t all of the above options at the same time?
Look I want a top 4 d-man as much as the next Wings fan. I’m not as concerned about forwards as there are a few very promising forwards knocking on the door and I would like to see them get a chance sooner rather than later. Yzerman actually mentioned considering as much in the presser.
People are acting like it’s common for all GMs to make 3-4 big moves each off season. When in reality it’s more like most don’t even make 1 big move, a handful will make 1 big move, and then 1 or 2 teams will make 2+ big moves. Nashville was one of those teams and look where they ended up.
Technically, Yzerman has made 2 big moves if you count McLellan since he won’t have implemented his full system until this upcoming season. Between a hopefully strong coach and strong goalie (probably the 2 biggest weaknesses), I’m way more positive about this upcoming season than I was last season.
Oilers made cup finals. Last two years Ina row.. Lost all there depth. It's not easy to just do bit moves 😊
Brain. Must not understand that.. It won't be this or next year.. I'm sorry. As a wings fan.. I'm ok with thst. Yzerman is doing well. Truly. Look around.. Mcdavid is going Fa Soon
Brian some analytics had Appleton @ 3 x $3,222,170 – so a significant underpay and lower term. He probably had offers in that ballpark but he went to college at Michigan St and probably just preferred to play in Detroit instead of accept his best offer.
No extension so far for Kyle Connor with the Jets. My hope is he won't re-sign with them, the Wings trade for him and sign him to a long term extension. They lost Ehlers for nothing and they can't lose another of their top players for nothing so if he won't sign, they have to trade him and this is where Yzerman needs to step up and make the deal.
For the defense, he needs to trade for a LD like Pelech from the Islanders or Ferraro from the Sharks who signed Orlov and picked up Leddy on waivers (both LD). RHD Gudas from the Ducks, Murphy from the Hawks and maybe Schenn from the Jets as a 3rd pair with Johansson.
You add Connor and one of those LDs and one of the RHDs and you have a playoff team. The bottom 6 would still need some tweaking but that could be done at the deadline.
