Fantastic affectionate description of what looks from the outside as abject failure. It was statistically that, but those numbers tell a story, notTHE story.
Omg, mate- I'm laughing and crying at the same time– an in-depth discourse of a long-ago moribund season, done in such an entertaining way– I'm in awe! As a long-suffering North Stars fan (those early-mid-70s were nearly as bleak as the Caps! + curse you forever, Norm Green!), I was not only impressed by the graphics and writing (Those "subway station" names! 🤣), but wow, the spirit those guys showed all the way through!
Sometimes, when the black dog comes around, I rewatch "Hoosiers" for a boost. But I'm going to bookmark this one when I need a bit of a lift.
Well done, and many thanks!
Some pronunciation corrections, according to one's memory: Michel BELL-humor, Dave KRIS-coe, Rod SEAL-ing, Wilf PAY-mont, Jerry Cheevers, Henry Boo-shay, MAR-sell PRO-noe-voe. Belhumeur deserves some love, too. As a Black Hawks fan, I remember him. He never won a game with the Caps and is a piece of NHL trivia, if infamous.
I hope both sides of your pillow are always cold mr. pinholio.
Thank you for another masterpiece, you've outdone yourself with this one
Damn man, you almost had me tearing up in the last few minutes. You're one hell of a story teller 🧡
Amazing video! My compliments. By the way, you could say Jack Lynch struggled a bit when he got to Washington. Over 15 games, he went minus 49.
It always annoyed me that a team called the Capitals had a logo that had the word Capitals in all Lower Case!
6:14 That is hilarious
at 0:59 that is the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, Iowa not Virginia
Absolutely beautiful work !!!!
This here is just like The Gospel t me why Jesus says few will find —-
Excellent Metro red-line motif in the graphics
I've never been a Capitals fan but I found your telling of their inaugural season very interesting. Well researched and presented.
If you can't split a quarter then why do they call it two bits?
Yeah, quoting scripture delegitimizes the entire video
I was not an avid collector of hockey cards as a teenager (in the '80s
), but I do have an Yvon Labre card from back then. It mentioned that he scored the Capitals' first home goal. Does anyone else have that one?
Washington capitals always had a solid lineup in the 80’s. Especially their D men were always top tier.
Ive always been fascinated by the worst seasons in NHL history, and The Hockey Guys videos on it just didnt scratch the itch i was looking for.
This is an amazing video. Very in depth and something only a true fan can articulate in terms of "the future."
Happy my pens get to be rivals with a great organization like this, and happy a video like this exists. Great Job!! 👏
I seem to recall during this season at the tender age of 11 reading an article in St. John, NB's Telegraph Journal Weekend magazine about the Washington Capitals' dismal season.
The story featured the perspective of the Caps' inaugural season from the inside, ie: from the players' perspective. One quote that stands out from that write-up I'll paraphrase as "Stanley Cup winners drank champagne, but after every loss it was bloody Marys for the Washington Capitals as they drowned their sorrows".
Washington eventually (like, decades later) DID win the Stanley Cup. Meanwhile two other expansionist teams from the 1968 through 1980 time frame have still never won the cup despite making the finals four times between them: The Buffalo Sabres and the Vancouver Canucks.
1:00:31 never smiled so hard in all my life. Almost made me tear up there. Omg the Adirondack Red Wings mentioned?! I wish I had been around for that team. I was at least able to catch the Albany River Rats before they left. Hockey is still going strong in Glens Falls, but now an ECHL team instead of an AHL team. Even though they were terrible this year they still had 15 or 16 sellout games. Nothing better than seeing an old hockey barn filled to capacity.
Well done my friend, from a Ranger fan
Great graphics! Go Flyers!
Good well researched video, but you have to learn to pronunce the players names.. it's pronounced "Paymont".
Ron Low was a good goalie.
3:18 I’m a massive fan of the ‘Washington Watergate Bugs’
wow, I loved your narration and the angle you took to relate the history of this team.
I remember a year when I was playing minor hockey, our team lost every game of the season… except the last one. The other team was so pissed that there was a bench clearing brawl after the end of the game lol
Why not do a show on van Canuck’s 50 years of misery
This was surprisingly
very well done
From the writing,
to the editing,
to the pacing,
and presentation…but you’ve got
to put a little
more effort into
the proper
prononciation
of the players names in order to be taken seriously by the veterans
Good storytelling nonetheless
Bravo
I’m a baseball fan, but this is one of the best and affectionate docs on sports I have very seen. The last line
