if NHL teams are anything like houses, FSG expects to double their money every 5 years
DK – your 18.5% chance to win the lottery as the 32nd team isn’t quite correct.
True the 32nd team has an 18.5% chance to have their “ball” selected but there is a collective 7% chance that teams 12-16 will win the lottery and move up 10 spots to picks 2-6. In that scenario the last place team will pick first and the other team moves up 10 spots. As a result – the true likelihood of the last place team to pick 1st is 25.5%. 18.5 that their sequence of balls wins and 7% that the winner is too far back to move all the way to number 1.
This doesn’t change your overall point, but does reflect the complete chance of picking 1st as the last place team.
Team hasnt been the same since Mario sold his share
Man I'd love to see Mario get the Pens again. Not only so the franchise would be in the hands of a legend who knows the sport inside and out, but also to be in the hands of someone who actually cares about the team and the city instead of treating it as just another asset.
DK, if Mario is considering buying back the team is there a chance he would bring Sid as part owner?
FSG has been a complete failure with the Pens as an ownership group. Any change, whether with Mario or someone else, would be welcomed.
He shouldn't have sold in the first place
I am tired of the narrative that because you aren't guaranteed 1st overall as the worst team that therefore there's no reason to be bad on purpose ever. 16 teams out of 32 make the playoffs. You aren't doing your job as GM if you don't have an accurate idea going into the season of where your team is likely to fall. In a stacked year like 2026 with both a high end top 4 or 5 picks plus a generational guy at the top, it's not about only getting 1st overall, it's about being positioned to draft a future core piece at minimum. Do you think San Jose is sitting there going wow, we ONLY got Michael Misa, we totally should have auctioned off our young guys to get a deeper team and aimed for 10th last instead? That's asinine. All you are advocating for is being the Minnesota Wild, nobody wants to be that. It makes even less sense coming from Penguins fans when the teams success has only ever come from picks from the top of the draft.
DK, you got me thinking today. I started being a fan in '89. Then my cousin took me to the Civic Arena and we sat way out in the top hanging way out. (was that E or F?). Great seats, but a little scary. It's like the car that's a lot of fun to drive, but you could see the road if it weren't for the no parking sign on the floorboard.
It seems for the past few years, it's been boring to watch with a few flashes. I'll pay for pay-per-view, but you better improve to keep me awake. The same old production like everybody else is not good enough. Give me a better product. Make me feel like I'm in the arena. Don't hypnotize me with a camera going left and right. Tell these TV execs you don't make more money by spending less, you make more money by doing a better job.
do we even know who IS Fenway Sports? Like, who's the face of ownership? There's no identity with this franchise anymore. FSG is all business and no culture. They're not a bad ownership its just straight up generic.
DK – I know you're not a rumor guy, BUT, let's play hypotheticals for a moment. It's rumored Mason McTavish(22 years old) and Martin Necas(26 years old) may be available. If players like that are available, do you think it could cause Dubas to tweak his game-plan if he could acquire those types of players at those ages? This brings players in to give Sid & Geno maybe another run, and since he's put together a nice pipeline of young talent, he could use future draft capital to make this happen without depleting the future.
You hit DK! The way the great Mario can influence, just by being an owner and visible, is beyond what can be imagined. For example, when he came out as the guest for Canada at the 4 Nations what that did for the team was amazing! He has an aura about him that transcends greatest and it shows anywhere he goes in hockey. Oh please let this happen!! During and coming out of this rebuild is exactly what the Pens need! Thanks always DK. Blessings, Victor
We never know for certain, but Mario may have better plans than before. Time will tell. Thank you DK, awesome show.
Do you remember the comedy show “In Living Color”? This line says it all for me about Mario not being able to buy back our Penguins. “Hated It”!
Tell him to bring Jaromír with him! It’s sucked so bad since Mario sold the team and Jaromír retired from the NHL – it’s become eye bleedingly boring 😫
