If San Jose goes to the USL it would have the nicest stadium by far in that League. I'm in Arizona and the USL team here plays in the parking lot next to sky harbor. And ironically have been more to go to their game can I have a week to regular season NFL game for the Cardinals, and game 5 of the world series
I will say, I don’t believe Oakland Roots could fit the MLS branding if that makes sense. San Jose is firmly MLS, I will say though USL is planning a D1 League that would be on the same level as MLS planning to launch in 2027, so the Roots could be on the same division as the Quakes, just a different league. Definitely makes a interesting hypothetical though for this video on the switch
Thank you for selecting my message I'm truly flattered! I appreciate you giving us your insight and all your work on your channel!
Unfortunately Brodie you are now in the middle of the pro/rel debate lol. You need to brush up your knowledge. If the Roots investment group can pull together a $1 billion bid, it can happen. But I don’t think it has that type of investment. My viewpoint is the Oakland Roots should be developing teenagers and selling them to MLS clubs like the Earthquakes. USMNT player Diego Luna was raised in the South Bay, was on the Earthquakes development program but didn’t like it (it happens), then went to USL’s New Mexico club where he played and was sold to MLS’ Real Salt Lake club for a few hundred thousand dollars where he’s a star (after several years…it wasn’t immediate). UNFORTUNATELY USL hasn’t developed that type of talent in any quantity (I think I can only count on one hand who was developed in USL and became an impact player in MLS…I don’t know any in Europe right now… I acknowledge there are a few ex-USL players in second division leagues and lower).
Why would anyone move the club from rich San Jose with a soccer specific stadium… to Oakland without a soccer specific stadium? NWSL Bay FC could have played in Oakland but chose San Jose’s PayPal Park. Nonsense… San Jose Earthquakes is the most undervalued asset in MLS… some group will pay big money, and then double it in ten years.
No. To leave the USLC for MLS, the owners would have to pay USL a fee of about Half the MLS expansion fee. The Quakes are also one of the Original teams in MLS, so that's not going to ride. The Roots would been a magical pitch and willing to be a big payment if they want into MLS which the team does not currently have the money for
USL is creating a premier division that will be sanctioned by U.S. soccer as a first division league with promotion/relegation in 2027-2028. Roots will most certainly be one of those teams that will be placed in the USL premier division so the question is moot.
The Quakes are so far out of the Roots price range it’s not even funny. Also SJ market far more valuable than Oakland. MLS would be less interested. New MLS franchise costs $500 million so that’s the lowest it sells. And Quakes include PayPal Park so no way it’s even $500 million.
One of the big issues is that MLS has a single entity structure, where the league owns every single team. USL clubs are independent. The only thing I could see possibly happening is the Roots selling the rights to their name, the owner buys the quakes, and rebrands them as the roots. I doubt MLS would give up the quake name, so USL would gain nothing from this.
Oakland should stay in USL while the division one exists in the future. While MLS should focus with Phoenix and Las Vegas anyway. Because there are only two expansions anyway. So that is the plan anyway.
I think San Jose has the advantage with population, money, and stadium. That’s a relatively new SSS in San Jose.
Another scenario could be Sacramento for the quakes
