If Cashman fires Boone, he'll just hire a replica. Ausmus is no answer; he's been in the dugout all along. Cashman needs to go, and a new culture needs to be established in which a disciplinarian manager can function. It seemed that Girardi was let go because he tried to discipline his players (Sanchez particularly), and that violated Cashman's rules. Kay goes on and on about how disciplinarian managers don't fit in "today's game." Yeah, well whose fault is that? It's the clubs' front offices that allow it. If the Players Union doesn't like a disciplinarian manager, what can they do about it? The Uniform Players Contract stipulates:
"7 .(b) The Club may terminate this contract upon written notice to the Player (but only after requesting and obtaining waivers of this contract from all other Major League Clubs) if the Player shall at any time:
"(I) fail, refuse or neglect to conform his personal conduct to the standards of good citizenship and good sportsmanship or to keep himself in first-class physical condition or to obey the club's training rules; or
"(2) fail, in the opinion of the Club's management, to exhibit sufficient skill or competitive ability to qualify or continue as a member of the Club's team; or
"(3) fail, refuse or neglect to render his services hereunder or in any other manner materially breach this contract."
If a couple of lazy prima donnas get their lucrative contracts terminated for cause, their peers will get the message toute de suite. I'm all for union power; but if players mutiny against a reasonable disciplinarian because they prefer to trot to first base or get over with sloppy play in the field, they get no sympathy from me.
