That's not how I see it. I'll consider the rebuild over when we have a new core built, covering all the key positions: a 1C and 2C, 2 quality defensemen, a bonafide starter and ideally a high-end winger.
The Pens have a problem with high-end free agents (or quality players looking to be traded) not wanting to come to Pittsburgh.
So they have to secure all the core positions through the draft.
Until then the number of picks they have doesn't mean anything. A late 1st rounder is like a 20% chance of becoming a top-six Forward, top-4D or 1G. I'm not sure what the % is in the 2nd round but it's bad. In the 3rd round it's horrible odds.
So until they have those things covered, I think they should relentlessly keep accumulating youth and picks.
Keep in mind that they're basically starting from ground-zero. None of the current veterans are gonna be here when they're good again, most likely. So it's gonna take either a great amount of picks, really good fortune, or a few top 5 picks or something in the next few years.
I'm happy about what Dubas is doing for the most part. But under no circumstances do I think he should stop. We don't even have 1 new piece of the next core identified yet, let alone 5.
3 1sts, 7 2nds, 7 3rds. That's approximately 4.5 players who will see 300 games in the NHL. Your rebuild is not over.
And everyone want Dubas fired.. I think he’s going a good job !!! M
DK, some stats: Dubas took almost an identical approach in Toronto; accumulate picks and young prospects. He selected 35 picks in a short period. Only 5 have played 100+ games. The average amongst GM's with similar amount of picks during that same period is 14.
His track record of taking those picks and young players in Toronto to acquire a bottom 6, defence and goaltending for Toronto to win (with 4 younger guys as their core as opposed to Pittsburghs older guys) amounted to one successful trade, and many failures.
I think your point just on the track record of Dubas is fair. He hasn't showed that he can accomplish MORE with more picks, so the job should be to take a step forward. The problem for me has always been my lack of faith that when it is time to take the next step he has the ability to recognize the players to acquire with all this trade capital he has picked up.
I don't tune in as much, but enjoy when I do. Had another encounter with an NHLer with the work that I do, a former Penguin. The Sid stories I hear is amazing. The guy is a legend and we are lucky to have him and continue to enjoy him.
I honestly don't believe they'll trade Karlsson before the season. At this point, the Penguins aren't in the driver's seat regarding his value. However, I expect him to be moved at the trade deadline, assuming the penguins aren't in a competitive spot, (i.e, top 3 in the metro) because his value at the trade deadline would be significantly higher than it is now, no matter how he performs. Someone like Toronto will get desperate and make a desperate move.
Its all good getting all these picks.. unless dubis want to trade a #1 for a # 234..

I guess I'm a member of a relatively small club which includes Sidney Crosby. He's 8/7/87 and I'm 6/9/69. One day per year, I suppose, this happens. So 1/365 of us, I guess. This obviously means nothing outside of trivialities. Still, if there's a club membership card out there, I'll take one! Happy Birthday, Sidney.
Happy birthday to the man. Sid the kid!!!!
I think if mcgroarty and others have to carry the load for the pens they will be very bad ! its far better if they can play minimally and learn from sid , geno, and rust ! before they HAVE to carry the load !
NED was kinda frustrating he could be great and youd look up and at the end of the game he still gave up 3 or 4 goals and when he was bad , well it wasnt good ! he is barely an average NHL goalie .
Good morning DK. I love the “Future Draft Pick Poster” idea!!🤣🤣 🤣🤣
To tell the truth now I really want one!! I can see it now…Some kid telling his friend, “yeah, future considerations is my favorite!!” lol
Cant compete with Jarry as goalie
3:16 – actually the Pens have two second round picks in 2028. The second one from Dallas in the Dumba trade. So, they have 17 total picks in the first three rounds for the next three years!
how did I forget that today is Sid's birthday? Of course, 8/7!
What happens if the pens overachieve this year? Like the caps did last year.
Happy birthday Sid.
The Penguins I believe will be overachievers this year. They have the veterans sprinkled in with all of these young players coming up to give them that knowledge and professionalism that they need to grow during the season. And it doesn't hurt that you have Crosby, Malkin, and Letang to learn from.
Good morning DK, you know when it comes to Karlsson and any talk of trading him, nobody says anything, except you have, like…..he does best when he's been on a team with forwards who go to the net regularly! Or how about, when he plays with a much stronger defensive partner than who he has been in Pittsburgh? Or how about, put him on a team that is in the hunt for a Cup and watch the Karlsson that was there in Ottawa(or his last year in the Sharks altbough they were horrible but Burns was gone and there was an issue there) or how about, and as we've seen, HE'S NOT TOO OLD! Karlsson has lots left in his tank, wants to compete for a Cup, and knows there is a situation that he'd wave his no trade for. So, whether its Dallas, Vegas, Toronto, Ottawa, or what I believe would be a perfect fit…Carolina, or another surprise team there is a trade that works, that I don't believe is some "terribly complex" trade to do, and that serves both Pittsburgh and the team who needs him. Wait until the deadline, perhaps. It all depends on what is Dubas wanting, just like with the two wingers. BUT, we also know at the deadline there will be other teams selling and there is nobody selling now which is in our favor. My point, get on the phone Dubas!!! Carolina has a strong farm system already, tons of picks, and if we received a 1st in 2026 plus mid/high level prospect from them he would be tops in our farm and Carolina wouldn't even notice those gone with everything they have! Eat a few mill, get a 1st in next years stacked draft, improve our farm, BOOM! They have a motivated Karlsson who plays with Slavin, on a strong team, who's better already and wanting to knock off Florida. Blessings as always DK, Victor 🇨🇦 🍁 🇨🇦
Did an ai search on the success (or lack of success) of Dubas draft picks in the past..not much good there. 2020 was particularly bad..He had 12 picks in 2020 and none ever played a single game in the NHL The Pens (like every successful team in the NHL) need good goaltending, a solid D, and some grit to be successful (in addition to offensive skills). So far I dont see much of a rebuild here.
DK, in the way the last two seasons ended we saw that the guys still have it in them, and that they can bring their A game come March & April, but how do you keep players like Karlsson, Malkin and Letang focused and motivated from the get-go, in October and November?
Happy Birthday to our Captain 🎉
Thank you DK, For now and as you said developing those young players to a higher level, is a must. Happy Birthday Sid ! Great show DK
With those first round picks, if the team is truly as bad as fans are acting like its gonna be, we could easily see a situation that built this team starting in the 80s and again in the 2000s.
Ive always said – You dont pick Fleury (1st overall), Malkin (2nd overall), Staal (2nd overall) and Sid (1st overall) by being a middle of the pack team just trying to make the playoffs without being an actual contender. Sid is the only pick that wasnt "earned" as we all know about that lottery and all the controversy. Have to go to the bottom to rise to the top!
