Rogers centre and Toronto Island (YTZ) is less than 300 metres from beginning of runway though parellel
49ers could have done a roof if they just dug down 50 feet. They didn't want to spend the money. For 3 or 4 games a season that get hot I don't blame them. They built it on their own dime. They still could have done a better design and more of an overhang or something to provide more shade. I still hate the overall design and where they built. And NO it was not designed to replace Candlestick. That was two owners and countless design firms ago. The 49ers have switched principle owners even though it has stayed in the family trust.
Landing at OAK means you go to the Coliseum BART station. That's practical.
I just don't know why they would build them anywhere near an airport. then complain when they cant build a dome after the fact like didn't you know this?
its not the closest, its the height, an already tall stadium in Levi stadium, adding an even taller roof, that has to be designed on top of the existing stadium
I was hoping for a transit video instead I got a pilot debrief😂
Google "Allstate Arena"
Allstate Arena in Rosemont, IL (Chicago Wolves/AHL) is directly beneath one of the flight paths into and out of O'Hare Airport. I can attest to that first hand.
Levi Stadium in San Jose, CA is is close to San Francisco Bay that any excavation would have been difficult and expensive. Not impossible but a risk. I’m also wondering if the proximity of two major faults and footing were a limiting factor?
Both stadium in Las Vegas pale in comparison to the height of the LV strip hotels and gaudy lighting.
PS — great discussion.
I remember one of the PS2 baseball games I had having random dialog get cut off by a jet flying over when the Mets were at Shea Stadium and the commentary complaining about the airport. 😂
Compare PayPal Park and Levi Stadium location… PayPal Park is across the street from midfield SJC but presents very little issue
Thank you extremely helpful comparisons with the runway maps, Brodie. I was comparing the area where Portland’s proposed Delta Dome was back in the 60s; it’s in the general area of approaches/takeoffs for most of PDX’s runways, but decidedly far enough away from their alignments.
Now I really understand the nature of the problem Portland has: trying to replace a freeway drawbridge with some lanes over 100 years old, but the drawbridge portion of the existing bridge is directly in the alignment path of the runways. There’s debates and proposals how to deal with it, because the bridge sits in the channel of one of the major navigable rivers in the US, and the current bridge has to open not just for tugboats but sailboats and ships of certain heights. There’s another freeeay bridge upstream which is high enough for marine traffic to pass under without needing a drawbridge, but the southern end of that bridge is directly under the runway approach corridor (I’ve driven directly under landing airliners onnumerous occasions!)
Interestingly there is a historical general aviation airport (Pearson Field) right next to the northern shore of where the freeway runs that is directly in the path of some of those runways at PDX.
And Portland’s original main airport would have been at Swan Island (where the main harbor is located). The plain by the river would have been constrained to eventually place Portland’s main arenas (Memorial Coliseum, Moda Center) near to the flight path for where I think the runways would have been, but far enough away and out of alignment to not cause issues for airliners. (There are two very high bridges, one to the northwest and one to the immediate southeast that could have been problems, but I think just far enough away to be safe.
Anyway, thank you again for the great information and especially visual aids on this topics! Much appreciated!
The current Browns stadium is in the flight path of Burke Lakefront Airport and there has been no issues…although the new proposed dome stadium is not an ideal location the FAA said it was fine…the current mayor of Cleveland is fighting to keep egg off his face from losing the Browns and pressured ODOT to block the new stadium
Why San Jose still have major sport teams
Stadia and train stations work so much better . . . Camden/Baltimore; Rogers Centre/Union; Kingdome/ King St; Wrigley, Yankee Stadium; etc.
