Marner doesn’t pay attention to the positive comments—he only fixates on the negative ones, because that’s the kind of person he is. I’ve been saying for years that he’s mentally weak, and it showed on the ice when it mattered most in the biggest games. At that level, you need something deep inside that refuses to let you be intimidated, and he simply doesn’t have it.
Plenty of people know where most of the superstars in the GTA live, and while I don’t condone doxxing, it’s not exactly a secret. Nylander can ride the subway without an issue, and as far as I know, no other Leaf has dealt with something like this. So to use the Leafs fanbase as an excuse to leave because of one pathetic loser is weak—it’s basically giving a middle finger to Leafs Nation, the same fans who supported and cheered for him every game.
Honestly, I’m glad he’s gone. The only frustrating part is that he wasn’t traded years ago when the Leafs could’ve gotten more in return.
This came across as poor me, look how bad it was so I had to leave..my guess is its not that hard to find anyone's address on the internet if you really wanted too. Also, don't they do tours of stars homes in LA? He really needed to go and glad he's gone!
I get where you're coming from, but it's hard to see past the negative fan response when it's 70% people hating on you, and specifically on you, and 30% telling people to back off. Did Matthews get hate after the playoffs? Yes. Was it as violent and pointed as the hate Marner got? No. Did Willy and JT get hate? Barely. It was focused almost entirely on Mitch. Even someone who gets called out regularly, like Rielly, doesn't get the vitriol that Marner got here. And it hasn't been just the past two years, it's been at least five. And you're right, he certainly doesn't help himself at times, and I imagine if he got a PR consultant, the first thing they would say would be to muzzle his dad and his agent. But it's also hard not to conflate the threats against his family with Leafs fandom as it is Leafs fans who have been bitter and angry, laughing about him getting doxxed and getting carjacked, and saying good riddance when he signed in another city. Not all fans, but definitely a lot of fans. And yes, it was one psychopath who put his address online and encouraged violence against him, but it was in a sea of Leafs fans creating a hostile environment. (Sorry for the novel-length response.)

I don't begrudge him being angry and feeling unsafe about his situation in Toronto, but I'm so sick of this line that he and his camp have that he was somehow underappreciated. Miss me with that.
I feel for Mitch cause some people are truly deranged when it came to everything Mitch. His family and friends also need to stfu and let the dude just be a dad and play hockey. This whole situation could have been avoided by making a change sooner. Plan should have been dead cause of the cap flat, but they kept trying.

I genuinely don't think Toronto was the place for him. I don't really know which market would be though. Vegas expects results as much or more than any other team. Unless he's just banking on the fact there are less hockey fans there (which is irrelevant, Vegas still shows up for its teams games, and has plenty of super fans), I don't see how he avoids this negativity he seems to fixate on. I think it's something he needs to solve within himself too, though a change of scenery will definitely help in the short term.
I feel for him but I just don't understand how he got this far when he clearly latches onto negativity so consistently. Nylander I would say performs overall much further below expectations at times and gets his criticism but it doesn't turn into the same feedback loop. He just plays through it. I know no one is holding Nylander to the same standard as Marner but still.

It's pretty sad Marner feels safer living in Vegas than in Toronto.

Oh cool another “leafs fan are the real victims here, woah is us” take. To pretend that THAT fan (and the many others who liked and retweeted that or said similar things) is not a fan and is simply an outlier is disingenuous. Leafs fans are arguably one of the most toxic fan bases in the league and part of that is by nature of being such a large fan base there are more assholes. But the majority of the vocal fanbase was scapegoating Marner for the top down failures of an organization for 2-3 years. A lot of the media and the fans (SDPN being a part of both) contributed to the hostile treatment of Marner by the minority of assholes because of it.
Mitch drank the Kool Aid. All those years of coaches, scouts and his parents pissing in his pocket made him truly believe he’s the second coming.
His playoff performance on ice proves otherwise and in this market of intelligent, rabid fans you can only go so far deflecting responsibility let alone blaming the very fans that are still holding on to the hope that maybe this would be the year you actually are relevant in the month of May.

LOVED Mitch as a Leaf. I don't think he could handle the pressure. At the same time, he did take on some BRUTAL incidents with fans.
After Mitch disappears in games 5, 6, and 7, his post game interview could be done on Penn and Teller's Vegas stage: "Is THIS your Mitch?"
I think Vegas could lose in the first round the next 7 years and I don’t think anyone is going to his house and leaking his address leaf fans are insane
