I truly believe that this year will show that the Ottawa Senators 2020 draft class will go down as one of the best for any team in NHL history. As most people know we took Tim Stutzle, Jake Sanderson and Ridly Greig in the first round and we also picked Tyler Klevin (who is a starter now) in the 2nd round but the hidden gem was landing Goalie Leevi Merilainen in round three. Merilainen statistically was our best Goalie last year in goals against average, save percentage and win percentage over his 12 games last year and he won all three of the Shoot Outs he was in. Not only do I believe he will be our starting goalie before long this year but that means we will be able to trade Linus Ullmark (Edmonton?) and recover that 1st round pick we used to trade for him (provided Sogaard is finally ready or we pick up a cheap backup) and we can free up some cap space. The Sens are maturing and I know 5 on 5 goals are an issue, but solid defensively and good goaltending make a huge impact. They could fight for first place, but the playoffs are still the goal. More battles to gain experience and two years on I think we’re in our window for a cup contender
This season brings so much promise, hopefully they can stay relatively injury free, with the depth they have now, baring major injury’s to their elite talent they should be able to compete for top3 in their division
Think Sens will build off last season, and be right in the thick of it, nipping at the heels of the so called top 3 teams in the Atlantic. Hopefully Jensen gets back to 100%, very under rated player. Like the additions of Eller and Spence. Kudos to Travis Greene for getting the team to buy into a more tighter defensive system.
