my brain short-circuited a little 😚🍒
I feel like the NHL is the most stuck of the Big 4.
I can see MLS getting big if it stops choking itself
IndyCar is hugely underrated. Going live to an event and seeing those machines up close will blow you away
No there is limited time and money for things to be main stream.
I hate to being negative Brodie, but the main reason why you won’t see the Premier league jump over to the US put soccer teams here is because the leadership with the Premier league they are not full of idiot sports commissioners, like commissioner Adam, Silver, and commissioner Roger Goodell. So if anything commissioner wise, their leadership is better and they know that they don’t have to go overseas to make a lot of money. Where is the NFL and MLB and NBA sadly the commissioners and those leagues are full of globalists and communist and socialist and corporate idiots and money hungry dick heads as well especially Roger Goodell and Adam Silver as well. Rob Manfred he’s right but he is very bad too.
I've felt this for a while. MLS diffidently opened up Pandora's box for other sports in North America. As much as I love the NHL, I feel the need to "Broaden my horizons" from the Big 4.
If you had told me 10 years ago, i'd be watching Tennis, Squash, Rugby, Cricket, Polo or Team Handball willingly, I would have called you crazy.
MLS will slowly gain as the years go on.
There's a great book on this topic called Offside: Soccer and American Exceptionalism by Hellerman and Markovits. The book states that it's hard for countries to have more than a couple of sports take over sports media. The "big four" were lucky to develop when America was going through an industrial boom in the late 19th century.
America only gives a damn about the big 4 major leagues (NBA, NFL, MLB and NHL) because they’re making money than MLS, nascar, and etc
I only really follow MLB and NFL as a fan. I don’t really like the NBA because it seems very weird and corrupt.
Like you, I can remember when in pro sports MLB was at the top followed by the NFL/AFL. The NBA (and ABA) was a distant third with the NHL essentially being a regional sport. As late as 1980 NBA playoff games were shown on tape delay at 11:30 pm. In only three decades MLS has already placed itself in a better position than either the NBA or NHL did in their respective first 30 years. What's more, because of the way soccer is constructed it is very possible that MLS could eventually become one of the top 4 or 5 leagues in the world. MLS has already achieved a top 10 status. So, yes, I believe that eventually we will be talking about a big 5 of pro sports in the US.
To add to your point about soccer, Liga MX is a very popular league in the U.S. (more popular than MLS and I think also more popular than the English Premier League). However, you also have to consider the FIFA World Cup (men’s) and the FIFA Women’s World Cup and that the NWSL for many years was considered the best league in the world (this might have changed because of the investment of women’s soccer in Europe recently). With baseball, I think there is a similar story here in Canada. I would even say that baseball is the eighth most popular sport in Canada right now.
MLS been getting bigger every year. BBall is a boring game that gets shoved down our throats. And most can’t relate cuz need be 6’6” to play.
100 years ago the Big 3 were Boxing, Baseball, and College Football. Things can change pretty quickly.
One thing for me as I follow the NFL, NBA and NHL is learning and keeping up with the players and even the staff for teams now.
I love football and will even watch college games time to time. But I refuse to dive deeper to learn who’s popular as it just isn’t worth my time. So that’s more so with other sports as I just don’t have time for them.
One thing though is summer is a bit of a drought for me, but nothing else interests me enough to learn the rules, players and history of the game to dive in deeper. So I stick to my 3.
I'm stuck on hockey. Any other sport is a distraction while hockey isn't on.
I do think the MLS could overtake the NHL in the US through there NHL will always be king in Canada
In America's defense, soccer isn't a real sport so you can't really categorize it with the rest.
Esse canal é muito bom . Assisto aqui do Brasil na dublagem automática .
I once knew a soccer fan. He was a fan of the Premier League & not the MLS. He said that the best soccer players in the world played in the Premier League. Soccer is more popular internationally than it is in the US. NASCAR was very popular in the 1990s. Today NASCAR is not as popular. Indycar is popular in Indiana in May. Baseball was very popular in the 1990s. Today it seems like baseball got less popular over time due to work stoppages & many years of some teams not doing well for years. I am looking forward to the members only video opening to everyone about are some MLB teams not good on purpose.
College Football is BIG. Definitely #2 in terms of popularity in the USA (some might argue #1). Problem with MLB is that there's a lot less action than football, basketball, and hockey – one reason why they can play 162 games a season. I personally like watching baseball more so than basketball, but the NBA is easily more popular in this day and age – just take a look at the new media deals the NBA recently signed and the estimated team values.
MLS had blown many opportunities to either move into the top 4 or make it a top 5. Currently, their TV packages be great for their die-hard fans, but the game is completely inaccessible for casual fans, let alone for anyone to stumble into a game. Just this morning, I could have watch a Premiere League match on NBC or a NWSL match on CBS. Every weekend, there are soccer games from multiple other leagues available on my TV (not to mention the streaming services I subscribe to for other things), but not MLS. I live 10 miles from an MLS stadium, and I forget we even have a team that’s in season.
I have a theory that if a sport is a sanctioned high school sport, AND a NCAA sport, it has a chance to be popular. Hockey is a bit of an outlier. However it is a NCAA sport, and a HS sport in Minnesota, Michigan, etc. In addition to the junior leagues. Soccer, and MLS is in kind of a grey area. It's probably the 5th major pro sport in this country. But MLS is not the most popular league in the world. But soccer got popular because it got adopted by high schools. It didn't require any specialized equipment and was easy to decode as a sport. Cricket would be a tough sport to adopt. It requires specialized equipment, a specialized field to play in, and it's unlikely to be adopted by High School athletic programs, who are already financially stressed.
Volleyball will be a part of the conversation within 20 years…
One of the challenges of sports outside the big four is the reluctance to make major rule changes to increase the entertainment value. The NBA added the three pointer, NFL changed the kickoff, NHL removed the two line pass, MLB added the universal DH, etc. Unless sports like soccer are willing to do that, they're going to have challenges breaking into that top four.
Brodie, in terms of leagues, if you count Div 1 college football as one league, there really are 5 leagues. If you consider that college players now can be paid plus NIL, then college football is basically a professional league. Not sure where they would be placed among the big 4 but collectively they would be up there.
I really thought professional lacrosse at a major league level would have captured a larger fan base by now. Growing up in a rural area we had no lacrosse anywhere near. Heck, I don't think I'd ever even knew about lacrosse until probably college. (I still don't know much about it but went to a MLL game near around 10 years ago now and was really enjoyed it. Unfortunately, that team is now defunct and lacrosse is still down on the pecking order. Maybe someday!
No. There’s Big 6 . NASCAR and MLS. It’s that fanbase are regional and local .
Considering the the "big" four have been around for a hundred years or more and MLS has only been around for 30 years, they are expanding quite well. They will be there in another 30 years. Auto racing is different than other sports because there are different sub groups of racing, open wheel, drag, stock car, motorcycle.
