It's like a team of four hall of famers who only needed 900. goaltending to get in the playoffs the last three seasons are still kind of good, eh? Karlsson with 3 assists can't be understated tonight either..
forgive me for being skeptical, it's just so hard to believe that this team could be good after watching them for the past 3 seasons
What's happening to the Rangers is equally eyebrow-raising…
I see a resilient group within the first 10 games, there will be bad games here and there but that's just Hockey. A coaching change has always done wonders for this core, history has shown it. Im not going to go that far yet, but in no way shape or form is this team what they have been!
On a night Sid got 1700 and made one of the many subtle plays on the ice that typically is unseen on his goal….I appreciated the discussion on Malkin. He has had not a problem playing behind Sid as a 1B or 2, but he is a great player and have enjoyed watching him with the Penguins.
Well said DK. I'm not convinced yet, but man the Pens have been showing night after night it's no fluke. I think the same narrative applies to this front office and Kyle Dubas. An offseason in the bargain bin was understandable, but still open to criticism for being too conservative an approach. But boy is it ever beginning to look like they cooked! With cautious optimism, I can envision an interesting upcoming trade deadline. The Pens are loaded in the farm system and draft capital too. If this team continues to not go away, what do you think the front office does at the deadline?
I've enjoyed them winning…I know Dubas won't spend at the deadline, so I hope they make the playoffs and continue the trend they've had, but I still see a bottom 10 team. They have the leagues best shooting percentage. Meaning there has been lots of 'puck luck' that has overshadowed a team that has on most occasions been outplayed. Advanced stats aren't everything, but the highest Corsi player on the Penguins is 230th in the league. Burnicke has looked his age the last couple of games he's played. And Novak, Clifton, Jones, Shea, Wootherspoon, all in the bottom 100 in advanced stats. Not trying to be pessimistic, every year there are teams that overperform and some make the playoffs…let's hope the Penguins are that this year.
We all know Sid is better than Ovechkin, but when should we have the discussion that Malkin is better than Ovechkin?
Could the previous years results of this team, the continued failure of the Pirates, and the Steelers collapse into bottom feeders, feed the negativity towards the Pens 🐧 that's on display in the comments? Has the city been subjected to failed expectations year after year to the point we've lost all hope in every Black and Gold jersey, regardless of the sport? We may have forgotten how to be a fan base full of believers. 🐧🏒🐧🏒🐧🏒
Concerning trend in that the Pens are giving up odd man rushes again to go along with some really poor defense in their own end. The strong team defense from opening night has disappeared, especially in the last 3 games.
They’ve been fortunate to play against some really bad goaltending. But 7-2-1 is 7-2-1.
Malkin is currently 28th on the all time NHL points leaders and could possibly enter into the top 20 this season. Yeah, he should have been in the top 100 list for sure!
Loving the Malkin line so far this year. I haven’t seen Geno move and play like this in a long time
Can I ask where the trade Geno crowd is?
As you said DK. Geno is still one of the best 2nd line centers in the game! I don't think that off of just this short sample size either.
maybe the problem WAS Sully after all….
Geno Machino – i am here for this right here. To quote Geno: I am score. Love the guy.
3 years super league
Bravo DK 👏
It's been such a joy to watch the Geno line this year. Every time I watch them relentlessly forecheck and doggedly chase the puck and cycle, I think of my favorite all time Mike Langism – "they're bussing like bees around a hive." Really excited for this next big stretch!
This HAS been fun to watch. Please remember it’s October…let’s see how these legs look in April….
Pretty good October. Now, how about a good November, Then a good December, etc., etc.
Hey DK, here I thought my comment today was going to beat you to the punch but you're already covering it, lol. Watching all the games including the one last night, I saw something I haven't seen in years……the second head of the monster! I admit I wrote him off as everyone else had, and called for his departure in the past. Whether its his linemates or the change of coach, Malkin has been flying and creating magic. As for Sid, its almost ho hum, he just keeps doing Sid things and we've all grown to expect those things, its been a one headed monster till this season. The two headed monster is back! With lines 3 and 4 also contributing, and Malkin's line being dangerous once again, teams can't just key on Sid to shut this team down. The Penguins are fun to watch when the whole team is going, win or lose!
I am shocked you jumped into discussing hockey without mentioning a fan is fighting for his life right now after falling from the rafters. Sid even made it clear he didnt really want to discuss hockey, but reporters kept blasting him with questions on the game. Classless reporting. And this podcast made me lose all respect for you
I think putting 2 big bodies on the with ice with Geno takes a lot of physical pressure off of him. I am loving watching not only Geno this season but also the rest of the team.
DK always believed in & remained respectful to Geno while hacks like Yohe & Madden turned on Geno when he had an off-season last year (much of it beyond his control). I never listened to Madden & completely disregarded Yohe after his hit piece on Geno. –"While Crosby and Ovechkin still shine, Evgeni Malkin is quietly fading away" Josh Yohe (March 31, 2025). Consider myself a DK loyalist at this point.
KEEP HIM FRESH AND HEALTHY. There is ZERO reason to play him in back-to-backs. If you do, his play will drop off. Significantly.
Genos on point
And here we are still looking for Sully. Unrelated, how are the rangers doing? I have not kept up on the rest of the division.
Pens have been exciting to watch this season. Thanks for all your reporting DK.
James Neal was a beneficiary of a dominant 71. They complimented each other. As did Petr Sykora. And he and Kessel were dynamic for a time. But he doesn’t like “lazy” wings. If so, he’d let you know. Haha
Malkin had some good wingers over 20 years but many times, they were leftovers. Scraps
DK, Harrison Brunicke has made some crucial mistakes that have led to goals against recently. if the penguins weren’t winning, one would think there might be more alarm bells going off about his play. is he struggling to maintain NHL level poise, and/or is the ‘load management’ philosophy behind his sitting every few games impacting his consistency?
Geno's my favorite player and I'm very sad I missed the game here in LA… However. I'm insanely happy with how he's playing right now and that he has linemates that won't be "stolen" from him… 🙄😂🤘🤘
Skeleton hockey! Just in time for Halloween
Thank you DK. I'm all for it DK. Geno, Malkin line is doing great. It does make me wonder why not sooner. Great show DK.
I've been on board with just about everything Dubas has done since he got here, but that would all be undone if he trades Bryan Rust while Crosby and Malkin are still playing hockey. I don't care what the return is, I would never forgive him.
