  1. Competitive balance? The San jose Sharks have been losing since I was born my guy lol

  2. I just really hope 2026 is not another Panther Stanley Cup and Dodgers World Series, it's starting to feel like the Chiefs in the NFL

  3. I'd think that the players in the lower salary tier would be more than happy to get a salary floor in exchange for a salary cap. They're never going to see Ohtani, Trout, or Harper money, but a few hundred grand per year for the the duration of their careers would make a sizable difference in their quality of life after their playing days are over. Methinks that once the dust settles, the agreement wil consist of two more expansion teams (more union jobs), a salary cap, and a salary floor. Given that the player's careers are so short, few of them can afford (literally) to sit out a season.

  4. Despite the competitive balance and salary cap it’s interesting to note how many back to back cups or “mini dynasties” have occurred in the NHL compared to other leagues. I believe this is the first time in quite a few years an MLB team has repeated?

  5. I would argue that MLB does have a level of competitive balance right now. We just had a season where the top team in the majors won 97 games (a .599 winning percentage). The top 10 teams in the NHL exceeded that, and 8 of those teams exceeded the .617 winning percentage (100 wins in MLB).

If MLB is smart, they'd tweak the formula a bit but they wouldn't go full hard cap. They can't afford a lockout/strike and they just had one of their best seasons in their history. I understand why most fans want caps…it gives the illusion of parity. The Big Teams Can't Spend Their Way To Championships! The Little Guys Will Have A Chance! I'm just not buying in. Even though I'm opposed to hard caps in general as they're a measure by owners to protect owners from their own stupidity, I can live with a hard floor as some of that stupidity comes from owners who are too cheap to spend what's required to field a team that competes.

The other angle behind this is the part that no cap covers i.e. the amounts that teams spend on aspects of team operations besides the players. Coaches/managers. Execs. The scouting department. Analytics. Minor-league/player development facilities. Training staff. Stadiums. All of those things factor in, and a lot of the cheaper owners skimp out on those aspects and/or try to pass the buck to local/state/provincial governments. This is one of the reasons I don't criticize the Dodgers. With the possible exception of the stadium (which is a "classic" stadium at this point and a little bit ugly), they've nailed all of these things because they've invested in all of these things. Why punish them for doing the right things from top to bottom?

  6. Let's suppose that MLB, owners and players agree on a salary cap at 280 million, fans of small market teams and cheap owners would still complain that the cap is too high. They want the cap around 150 million because small markets are not profitable enough to go higher than this.

  7. A salary floor is great for the lower players in the league. They can start at a decent salary and work their way up. Very few will become high paying superstars but they can earn a decent living and be able to retire comfortably. I am for a salary floor. A hard salary cap will benefit smaller market teams. The big market high income generating teams will not be able to buy a lot of the best players. Lower market teams will be able to add a few of the top players to their roster. It would help generate interest in the team and increase ticket sales. They have a better chance of making the post season, in any sport. In a fully balanced league where all is perfect each team in the MLB. NFL, NHL. NBA would win a championship every 30 years or so. That scenario will never happen, but making a league competitively balanced does give more opportunity for each team to get into the post season every few years.
