  1. Minor clarification in that alternate captains may also speak with officials in the NHL not just the captains

  2. Hey Brodie, I’m Kyle from Philadelphia. I’ve been waiting to see if you’d get to my message, so thanks! Here in Philly, it was a big deal that the Flyers didn’t name a captain for two years after the departure of Claude Giroux. It’s still discussed frequently that they ripped the C off 88’s jersey decades ago. I’ve worn letters on various teams growing up and it’s both a big honor and responsibility and I don’t know if you can truly get it if you haven’t been part of it, but it matters.

  3. What I like about NHL captains, is that they aren't always the star players or leading scorers (not saying they aren't good players by any means) they are selected for their leadership above all else. One example I find particularly interesting is the for this season, the Colorado College hockey team's captain is their goalie. That's a very rare thing to see

  4. DO MLB & NBA TEAMS NEED MORE CAPTAINS? HOW ABOUT SOLO CAPTAINS IN NFL?

  5. It's been a few years, so my memory may be faulty, but I remember Bob Prince referring to Bill Mazeroski as the captain of the Pirates. Whether that was official within the team, or the team's announcer just recognizing his leadership in the clubhouse, I'll likely never know.

  6. Even though goalies can also be captains, it is really tough for them to communicate with the team. Remember when Luongo was the Canucks captain for a bit?

  7. The concept of captain is important in sports where effort is a big factor. So, hockey and football, definitely need captains. Basketball too needs effort to win, but compared to hockey, you could argue that talent plays a bigger part in basketball than effort. So, the idea of captaincy in basketball is less of a no-brainer.

And since baseball does not rely much on effort, the need for captaincy is not present. Baseball is mainly about talent and concentration, which is not the same as physical effort.
