The fact that you cannot find one single good thing out of the team in this game tonight is really ridiculous. You’re starting to play up to your supposed “brand” by freaking out and thinking/hoping people watching will give you lots of likes and clicks because you’re having a complete meltdown, when it’s totally unnecessary. It’s like the boy who cried wolf… Have you ever read that story Steve?

I think you nailed the point with this line: "the team can't defend". While I can see the case (and its a good one) to scratch Rielly to have a wake up call, I don't think that fixes the real issues you're having on defense because it's a team thing not just an individual one. I'd even go so far that the way individuals are being deployed by coaching staff is part of the problem.
On the D front, you're without Tanev and it doesn't help that Benoit is having a bad year, because he's supposed to be one of their solid D-first guys. Even McCabe, despite playing decent game in and out, still has unusual gaffs this year that are costing the team. Case in point, the 2 penalties this game where they got scored on one were just bad positioning. I mean at this point, we consider McCabe our top D guy (which I disagree with forcing but clearly Berube is using him that way) and he spent 2 penalties in the box, that the canes scored on one. Why? Because Myers and Benoit ended up being your penalty kill D with him in the box lol. OEL has been great, but similar to Rielly in that you love him neutral zone onwards. In his own end, OEL's very much a similar problem to Rielly. You want more from this team and so it needs to play better D (as a whole) because the D you have aren't going to offer you much more unless you use them different (which I think Berube needs to do).
To zone in on Rielly as a final point to this team D; yes you want more from Rielly but he's especially being used differently compared to previous years. It's in a limited fashion by Berube which has been a hard adjustment and amplifying the warts. Particularly he doesn't spend much of his time playing with the top 6, and certainly not with Matthews and especially not when they have the lead. Rather, Rielly is often thrown out with the bottom 6 (which you'll see are a big issue on the team defense side) and for the purpose of securing goals when the team is down. If Berube would trust Rielly with our top line to play those hard minutes, maybe the balance with the team would be better by having McCabe play with the bottom 6 more and improving some of the defense. But right now that's not how Berube and company are going about it. They have all their top defensive minded players playing together against the hardest competition, which is working because they all hold the team's top +/- ratings. But then they are leaving the rest of the team to crapshoot the rest of the game where they are getting killed defensively by opponents. Rielly has 13 points in 15 games, 1 point behind Matthews. You don't need to shelter him for offensive production; you need to position him with defensive strong lines who can help him in the areas of the game he struggles – same goes for his D partner, which Carlo has been meh this year. Likewise, we need to be using our more defensive minded D to help sure up play happening with our bottom 6, because my goodness they are costing this team.
Don't believe me? Calle Jarnkrok is a -5 despite having 4 goals in 11 games (and we know those aren't PP goals). Lorentz is a -5 with 4 points in 10 games. Joshua is -6 with 5 points in 16 games. And Max Domi, love ya Max but my God, a team worst -10 with 5 points in 16 games. The other bottom 6 players don't fare much better outside of Maccelli, but he's played top 6 time (and that's why he's +). These bottom 6 players are who you're playing Myers, Rielly, and Benoit with. Their respective +/-: Myers -5 in 8GP, Rielly -4 in 15GP, Benoit -3 in 15GP. The D problem is more to do with the forwards than the D, especially on defending the rush.

What do we notice?
– Well Tavares, Willy and Knies are playing unreal; you love what you're getting from them.
– Matthews looks human with 14 points in 16 games but he does have 9 goals. He's a team second best +9, winning 59% of faceoffs, and shooting roughly around his career average shooting percentage.
– So Matthews looks his normal self with scoring capability, but he's just more focused on defense and unfortunately his AAV demands more.
– A comparison: JT is getting paid 1/3 what Matthews is and is driving play better than Matthews, that shouldn't be the case (and I love JT; this is about Matthews not being up to snuff)
– If you sort by +/-, it is only top 6 players, or a couple (McMann, Maccelli) who have played in top 6 roles, who are positive.
– EVERY SINGLE 3rd and 4th liner are a minus on this team. And the defense you usually put out there with the 3rd and 4th liners are all minus too.
So does scratching Rielly fix that? Probably not. But I don't know who you scratch because you can't even threaten to scratch the 3rd / 4th liners, they are already competing to stay in your lineup based on numbers as is. It's clearly not enough of a motivation for them as is with the defensive woes. I actually put this up to how the team is deploying it's various units (forward and defense); to me that's a coaching situation but I doubt adjustments will be made effectively (to your point about Lalonde, and even the way Berube goes about his D usage).

Literally have been campaigning for Pete DeBoer for weeks. Idk how much I have to say it, either stick it out with Berube. Lose and HOPE we luck into a top 5 position because in this uber competitive division where a slight winning record doesn't guarantee the playoffs OR we go with the guy that went to 6 WCF in 8 years. AND YES, I will not buy fucking Leaf tickets. Man I have a hard time staying until the end of the damn game they play so fucking ugly. Listen Sheldon's Leafs didn't have grit or hard defense but at least they kept possession and forechecked well, you know the things you ACTUALLY need to win a fucking game?
Those poor whiskers need friends.
Also, you go on boasting about how you will not pay for tickets to see the Leafs, you won’t pay for a ticket, you make a face and say “Ewww, yech”and yet you used their tickets, to lure people into supporting your Rachel’s Raiders charity team for the Eric Lindros classic. You dangled two free tickets to see the leafs play Ottawa in December to encourage people to donate to your cause.

I hope Steve's blood vessels are on good shape and healthy with no extra grease on walls.
When he looses his temper , there is a risk that one of those weak vessels in brain can break.
What he says about the team , he is mostly right. Something IS missing, but the management and coach can' t find what it is.

Matthews never gets multiple goal games anymore despite being in prime. He used to get two or three every week. He’s a 4 goal scorer now and should retire with 6-700. 700+ if healthy and hungry in mid 30s. Connor Bedard first to 1000 goals cause he’ll only be 25 in five years and Ovie hitting 1000 will only happen if he finds mojo and signs two year deal in 2026. I think Carbery wants old people to leave. He likes kids.

Hey Steve, thanks for voicing exactly my thoughts and probably thousands of Leafs fans thoughts too. After watching the Blue Jays heart and soul effort these guys are a disgrace. You are right even if I had tons of money I would not spend it to watch this team. No guts, no effort, just wealthy hockey players dipsy doodling around for 20 to 7 minutes a game 3 times a week while the rest of us bust our tails at work. Shame on them. We deserve better.
I have followed the NHL since 1981. Lived in Connecticut so saw the whalers live many times in the 80s. Also devils, rangers, islanders and one playoff game with a brawl in Montreal my dad took me to when I was 12. Still my greatest memory with dad. As a kid the real stinkers in the 21 team league was Detroit, Toronto and Hartford, but the whalers had flair and a passionate fan group despite small market. Civic center a mall the whalers played in was so much fun. Anyway. Leafs became a hungry powerhouse in the early and 90s up til early 00s. Since then just fancy stars who can’t win big games.
I feel like I've seen a Deserve O Meter similar to that recently…oh that's right it was Avs 96.7% vs Oilers 3.3% and it was literally yesterday.
Granted, that was also a 9-1 schelacking by the Avs who put boot inside of ass so hard I think it turned them inside out
