  1. Sidney Crosby is a remarkable player but the Magnificent One is number #1 and Sid is #2 yes different eras but for those who saw Lemieux play it was just jaw dropping and to see Lemieux and Gretzky play was something no one will ever forget.

  2. Comparing eras is never balanced. As a Penguins fan it's been a fortuned franchise. Without Mario there is no franchise. Without Jagr there was no surviving the hard times while also getting to watch one of the greatest players ever. Without Sid there is no comeback and he definitely had great company Geno, Flower, and the band. Whose luckier than us in Pittsburgh? #blessed And to see Mario lace em up with them both through his hardships was Heroic and Legendary

  3. not a knock to Sid, but nobody was Mario. never seen him before and never again. it was just like Orr and Gretzky. their names are their names for valid reasons

  4. There is a case for BOTH Crosby or Mario. It's impossible to make a definitive claim because both played in different eras. You usually don't forget the first as it has more impact than the 2nd so Mario seems to be ingrained in hockey lore and history all time…..but Crosby arguably is the most complete player in the history of the game. Nobody has the complete arsenal that Crosby has and at the highest level. Gretzky and Lemieux were offensive juggernauts but they weren't as good defensively as Crosby is. Crosby is faster and more tenacious, more physical (before the concussions) and wins the battles in the boards unlike Gretzky and Lemieux who avoided the boards and grinding and just waited for others to do the dirty work to get them the open passes. There's no question Mario to me is the greatest talent ever, but Crosby is the most complete. Mario missed a lot of games due to his injuries and health, but Crosby has also missed nearly 3 seasons in total if you add up the concussions and the fact he's even been able to continue playing at such a high level is never before seen….every other player in NHL history that has had major concussion problems NEVER succeeded after them…Lindros, Kariya, Modano, LaFontaine, ….Crosby would easily have 2200 points or more by now based on the trajectory of his first 6 seasons until the concussion happened to end his 6th season which was his best ever season on pace…..Crosby would arguably have been able to catch Gretzky's point total because Gretzky fell off tremendously at the end of his career while Crosby still puts up 90+ points at the end of his career. So I'd say Crosby is the best complete player in history, Mario the greatest talent (even greater than Gretzky), but greatest Penguin? Impossible to say cuz Mario was great for his era and Crosby likewise for his era. They both have done equally for Pittsburgh and their legacy.

  5. 5 Sids would beat 5 Marios any day. Sid is more complete player. He actually changed the way centers play in the NHL. Adjusted for era, Crosby compares very well.

  6. Not a chance. Mario legitimately has a claim to be the best player of all time. Sid is definitely top 10, but top 5 would be a debate.

  7. I love Sid. I love watching him play. He is such a great ambassador. I have never heard a bad thing about the guy. I have been a season tix holder since 2001 so I have been lucky enough to watch his whole career. However, Mario played in only 915 games. Sid is now at 1,388 games played. Its Mario and then Sid. And where is Jagr in this discussion?

  8. If we are talking about better all around, complete players, than it is definitely Crosby.
But than again he is one of the best complete 200ft. players ever, period.

  9. Sid is great and all but there is no conversation to greatest Penguin ever. It is Mario. It will forever be Mario.

  10. Super Mario is the second best player to ever play the game. Why are we even talking about this ?? Mario only played with good talent for 3 years prior to cancer and still ruled the league.

Take away the cancer and Mario owns every nhl record.

  11. It comes down to : "If not for Mario, there would be NO PITTSBURGH PENGUINS for Sid to Dominate with".

  12. You can't really compare old rules NHL players to new rules NHL players. It is a completely different game.

  13. Both are Mount Rushmore players, but for completely different reasons. Sid is one of the greatest hockey players of all time because he made himself that way. Mario is one of the greatest of all time because God made him that way. As far as who's the greatest Penguin. It's Mario, he's the greatest hockey player the world has ever seen (no disrespect to Gretsky, but I think he'd tell you the same thing), but gosh, how lucky are we in Pittsburgh to even get to have a conversation like this? 💯

  14. Mario saved Pittsburgh from losing the team. Crosby has continued that. Mario had Wayne in the league in his time, so Mario didn't grab a lot of headlines, Crosby has the headlines, the media has helped him and the league. What Crosby does off the ice has helped the game of hockey more than what people think, he has bought equipment for kids who wound not be playing due to the expense. There are not too many players like Gordie, Wayne, Mario, And Sideny that come along and do what these have done. Those who have watched any of these players have seen something they may never see again.

  15. I'm gonna straighten you both out right now.The only thing sid ever did to save the penguins was get drafted Mario is the one that came up with clutch goals in key moments night after night, Mario is the 1 who rose to the challenge every playoff, and put on the performance in the most doubtful times I see none of this in Sydney, he is just a talented player. He does not have the magic. He does not have what mario was , and is to us!!!!

  16. This is the same as the Lebron Jordan conversation, and it's as simple as this. If you were not at least 10 years old by 1984, then you have no right to weigh in on any of those opinions, because you were not alive to see how the true masters played the game.

  17. In the first idiot , that even brings up that moron ovi …. There Has never … in the history of the game been a bigger plug hog' self centered selfish player other than Malkin…Just a coincidence both russian

  18. No, greatest Penguins Player ever, sure (more points than Mario and one more cup as player). But greatest Penguin is Lemieux between his dominance as a player and what he has done for that org off the ice.

  19. Hook both Mario and Sid up to a polygraph and ask them this question.

    Both would say the other.

Only Sid would be telling the truth.

Credit to Colby Armstrong for answering this correctly.

  20. I'm a homer for the Pens so this is my take. Mario is the greatest player of all time. Sid is the greatest Penguin based on the three Cups

  21. For these two not to be able to say what is the clear cut fact shiws their level of knowledge and incompetence. Take absolutely nothing away from Sid but Lemieux is a totally different level!
