People are too obsessed with what Rod says about Niki.

Im not sure what goes on in Rod’s head regardless of what he says. I just hope he can see the benefit of the physicality and incorporate it into the team’s game a bit more. Hes right, we dont want someone on the team fighting all the time and taking penalties, but at times the team is too far in the opposite direction and fails to respond to any sort of physicality.

RBA is right.
Probably shouldn’t be a surprise that Niki can fight but you don’t really want your guy fighting. It’s nice to have folks know that he can but you’re just risking more injury to a guy you need out there.
magicandfire
Rod probably just means he doesn’t want a good player to be sitting in the box all game every game. IDK this feels like nothing to me.

Seems like a pretty banal comment

The last line of that quote is ‘Good to see,’ which was conveniently left off. Rod quite literally says that seeing Nikishin handle himself was good to see.
The_Crypto_Caniac
I just hope he meant that he doesn’t want him to fight often because he doesn’t want to lose an important defenseman frequently, and not that he doesn’t want him to fight because he doesn’t believe in that style of hockey, because in the past we’ve been pushed around too much without responding.

What? « Learning » what we already knew? He’s a force to be reckoned with defensively, offensively, physically, and even with his hard shots.
Yes, we don’t want him in the box all the time; we need a physical presence and let it be known that we will react. Remember how much Blake was getting targeted during the first half?
Legitimate-Can-3849
My guess is that he’s telling Nikishin to be smart about when he chooses to drop the gloves. Last night was a good time for it because we came out with a power play. Other times it might needlessly put one of our impact players in the box for 5 or give the opponent a power play.

I think we should all learn by now that the way Rod speaks about players is just weird to us. Nothing to read into.

He’s right. It gave them life, and the dude he fought got the game winner. That’s not this team’s style to react to every fight request and agitation after clean plays.

I think people are reading too negatively into it. Keep in mind the situation last night:
Nikishin laid out Lardis with a clean hit. That was gonna be it but Moore came in shaking the gloves. So Boom said fine and handled it. But his body language pretty much screamed that he was annoyed about having to fight.
Its well known that Rod doesn’t like fighting, especially when it’s unnecessary. And the one last night was absolutely unnecessary. Nikishin is more valuable on the ice than in the box. Plus he’s shown a lot of restraint up until now. Shit, the Sabres and the rats have tried getting under his skin bad and he hasn’t bit.
My takeaway from what Rod said is that Nikishin has shown how he can handle himself, but that they don’t want it to be a regular thing. That was a challenge Nikishin could have (and probably should have) walked away from. It was a clean hit and Moore probably would have gotten an Instigator penalty for trying to start shit. Who knows, maybe if he hasn’t been in the box that PP wouldn’t have been godawful with Miller running it.
That being said, Nikishin was going to have to fight eventually, especially with how physical he can play. I’m glad it was against a guy who was like a foot shorter than him and had no business challenging Nikishin the way he did. I mean, we all saw the results there lol.
Honestly, I wouldn’t read too deeply into Rod’s comment.

I don’t really see an issue with what he said. He’s right that you don’t want him fighting like that because he’s seeing a lot of time on the ice lately and doesn’t need to be in the box for five minutes.

He was cheesing ear to ear during this whole exchange. The vibe I got was overwhelmingly one of a dad knowing fighting isn’t a great way to deal with your problems, but super proud his kid whooped the bully’s ass.
Are these really the straws we’re grasping at now?

He probably doesn’t want it to happen often and I doubt half the teams in the league want to fight a guy his size
banjo_hummingbird
I mean I’d rather have him on the ice as much as possible and not in the box. I imagine players will think twice before challenging him since he just folded that guy scary fast. I think Rod just wants him to use his powers with great responsibility.
GoCanes2468
What did he say about his shootout selections? 5 guys taking a shot and one of them not being Aho or Ehlers is wild. I knew K Miller wouldn’t even put it on net as soon as I saw him come out.
BlackMuddyRiver87
He reminds me of Jesse Boulerice on the physical side. Nice to have the physical presence with someone who can also play.

I hope the rest of the league took notice. Maybe that will be a deterrent to other teams in the playoffs.
dankbuttersteez
Sounds like he wants to protect his rookie more than anything.

New year, new profile picture for Cory?

Idk why leaving off “Good to see” by Lavalettes post really pisses me off. RBA made an entire statement. Post the it or none.

Idk why everyone seems surprised Niki can fight (especially against a smaller guy). He played years in the KHL. He’s not the same as NA rookies coming in straight from the juniors.

Now I wanna hear what Rod had to say about those shootout choices…

Im more interested in what RBA said about himself coaching the PP and sending a D out for a SO
