Goalies tell coaches when they start. Captains pass on things that are too difficult or uncomfortable. « Superstars » and team leaders flipping off cameras. Can’t imagine this team doesn’t win every game!

Would prefer the comment to come from someone other than Hayes. Hayes considers himself a shoot from the hip, straight shooter type, yet I find him quite the opposite. Every time the leafs lose a few games he wants to clear house, and when they win 5 straight he has his wife down in the basement polishing the lawn furniture for the inevitable parade. Having said that, while I have no problems with Matthews, I would never have picked him to be the Captain in the first place. So there is that I guess,

It’s being reported via “The Leafs Report” that media did not ask for AM’s availability before or after the game. These fencesitters framing it as something else is pretty stupid

I don’t blame Auston for this directly when you can clearly tell that the attitude/culture this organization has fostered is just totally flawed. Your captain is supposed to be one of the emotional bridges between a team and its city/fan base but when the organization is completely out of touch you end up with a captain that doesn’t understand the moment.
Why are all the TV and media personalities around this team completely and utterly insufferable?

I don’t give a shit as a fan. Matthews has been asked about Marner how many times this season? He told the press during the summer you have x amount of days to ask me Marner questions then it’s over.
When the game in Vegas was about to happen Masters tried to ask him a question and Matthews cut him off and we all liked that.
The Leafs played a shit game at home against Vegas. What the fuck do you think Matthews was going to get asked about? It was 1000% going to be Marner questions.
So tell me this- how can this team- this group of 25 guys move on from Marner (which they clearly want to do), when the media is constantly asking questions?
You take a page out of the captain’s book and you avoid them for a night. If Matthews had a history of dodging the media it’d be one thing. But he doesn’t. He’s just sick and fucking tired of the Marner questions. Can you blame him?

So I thought this too. But Jonas and Mirtle both said that Matthews wasn’t requested by the media. The way it works for the leafs is media must request the players they wish to speak to. That being said, idk if Matthews can override that. Why media wouldn’t request Matthews is shocking to me.

Whether they requested it or not, he’s the captain and should face the music after each game. And I have a hard time believing they didn’t request him, especially after this game. Tavares spoke all the time when he was the captain, and even now he speaks to the media more often than Matthews does. He obviously avoids it as much as he can.

It seems like Tavares has a captain’s passion but not a captain’s strength, and sadly, Matthews has neither.
They are on the air way, way too much.
It happens with most talking heads. They just get dumber and louder as their takes get more and more watered down and over reactive. Hayes wasn’t always a blowhard, but I cannot stand him anymore unless he’s on a panel with real adults. He may as well be Sixeiro. Maybe we’ll see him on BT soon.
Seriously, why would anyone outside of the media give a shit about the minutiae they seem to demand athletes talk about every day if it didn’t keep them employed? As a fan, these media personalities are not what I follow the team for. They are not adding anything good to the experience.
How is this is any different than Simmons dragging Phil? This stuff is coming from employees of the same parent company as the players is even more confounding.
If they need the players to be more available than publicly elected officials just so they have something to do at work, they can just stay home. If they are unable to talk about anything beyond traffic, weather, golf, or the world juniors without becoming the problem, just stay home.
How about everyone gives these guys some fucking breathing room for godsake. Imagine you being at work and after every shift you’d have an impromptu review of your day?
He should understand his role as captain but I also completely understand knowing you’re not in the right mindset/mental space at times. Yes, you have to be a professional but I would rather someone self-aware and able to take a step back when they need to than have something you said slightly wrong get taken out of context or give the same generic answers anyways.
Not like Matthews says anything interesting 99% of the time.

I have said this for a while not but it feels like Matthews only gives interviews when things are going well for him or the team. It is very rare you see him on TV after big losses
The guy is not the captain first of all. Tavares and Reilly are equally captain material. I don’t care if I get down voted for saying Reilly. He bleeds blue. Nylander is cocky asf and that’s ok. He puts his money where is mouth is. This team needed Marner and there is nothing more to it. The fans ran him out of town. Now it cracks completely and everyone wants to throw blame. Why don’t the fans run Matthews out too. It will be even better. Lol. Leaf fans (which I am one since the 70’s) are the most idiotic fans there are. Ask any other team sub. Everyone agrees. Then media in Toronto can make so much money covering flipping the bird or not giving an interview and call it news. It’s laughable.
I would cut media out completely if I was running that ship. Speculate all you want Sportsnet tsn sun etc. Kessel hated them too. Rogers owns them so that’s not going to ever happen. So suck it up leaf fans, last year was as close as this team will come to Stanley Cup. Until the fans stop whining and stop showing up to the games with a losing squad nothing will ever change.
I rarely ever hear anything positive about the leafs. It’s always criticism. So now it’s stolartz too. « Why does he get to start if he wants? » Uh management agreed to it. How many more times were they gonna ask him shit like “what do you think the reception will be like for Mitch?”, “Does this feel like more than just another regular season game?”, “You and Mitch played a lot together in this building, was it weird seeing him sitting on the visiting bench?”
Just shut up already. Move on. This team needs to refocus.
Something to learn? Why we still treating Matthew’s like he’s 18. He’s just not captain material and that should be okay. Some people are better players then leaders and being captain seems to be a distraction from what he’s really getting paid to do.

thats it. theres no role as an assistant coach. there’s no role as the sole communicator between the team and ref. there’s no role as the main motivator and confidant of the other players.
