Wins are as much a team stat as a goalie stat (especially when your team is stacked)
His individual award and international play cupboard is pretty bare. That’s why he’s not in the hall of fame. He was a good goalie on a great team. Bug was he a “great” goalie? Vezina voters never raised him to that level. Canada had no problem finding 3 better goalies everytime the Olympics came up. So he was never the top goalie of his generation, and never even considered a top 3 Canadian goalie of his generation.
He was damn good, sure enough. But he was overshadowed by a lot of damn amazing. Hasek, Roy, Brodeur….stood was a good goalie in a generation loaded with great ones.
No disrespect to osgood but there were several seasons where he wasn’t even the best goalie on our team. So much so that for a time he became disposable, right on the thick of his prime.
Osgood wasn’t just good, he was good for a long time, longer than many. But great?

I don’t care what anyone says, he deserves to be in the hall. Three cups, two Jennings, more than 400 wins and fewer than 250 losses. I find the idea that a Vezina is the difference between that career and the Hall of Fame one to be silly.

He deserved a Conn Smythe and came close to a Vezina, but never won any individual awards. His stats overall are not elite. If I wasn’t a Detroit fan I wouldn’t even consider him for the Hall. I don’t see him making it even with 401 wins.

He’s not going to end up in the HHOF because, rightly or wrongly, he is viewed as being a good but not great goalie on elite teams where essentially any competent goalie could have done what he did.
I like Osgood a lot, I think he helped the Wings more than he gets credit for, but his analytics don’t help him. If we ignore the last three years of his career (where he was really bad in the regular season) his career GA%- is 98, meaning that he prevented 2% more goals than an average goalie. That’s good, but it’s not great.
Additionally the perception of him is hurt by his time away from the Wings. In those two seasons his GA%- was 108, meaning he was 8% worse than average. This fueled the perception that he was only good because the Wings were so good.
I think his playoff numbers do push him more into the conversation. In 2008 and 2009 he was an absolute beast in the playoffs, 29-10-3, 1.80 GAA, .928 SV%. But I don’t know if that’s enough.

Since there’s no real criteria for the HHOF, who knows. Since Vernon got in, Osgood has just as good of a resume minus the Conn Smythe. The whole “he was on good teams” arguments are hollow. Most goalies in the Hall of Fame were on good teams. Osgood is borderline and it will depend on who is on the selection committee going forward.

And I think that is where we sit with Ozzy. He was a really good goalie and he has a tremendous trophy case. But, he was never the best. He was never the best goalie in the league, in any season, and honestly was probably never even part of that conversation.
And for goalie to get into the HHOF, that is pretty much required. You must be, at some point, the best of your era. That was never Osgood.

Rogie Vachon (another # 30) gives me hope. He retired in 1982 and was inducted in 2016. That’s a long wait, so hopefully Ozzie deservedly gets in, even if it’s « ‘better’ late than never. »

Honestly I don’t understand HOF voters. I don’t think he’s « next » in line for his era but I thought he was more deserving than Vernon.
That being said I really don’t think he belongs in the HHoF. He was never an elite goaltender for more than a year and almost all of his accolades are team based.

Have Wings fans forgotten that that they became frustrated with Osgood’s performance, traded him away, got a better goalie, and won the Cup the next year? He was a great goalie but was haunted for most of his career by the reputation of being occasionally shaky.

I think Osgood’s case is crazy, because I can see him as the closest player to not make the HoF.
If we won one more game in the 09-10 Finals, he adds another Stanley Cup, and likely a Conm Smythe to his resume, and is a slam dunk HoFer. I still want to see him in, but what other player is a closer discussion than him?
