We got rid of Marner on this notion.
Once we get rid of one of Nylander and Matthews we can get the new problem of not having enough talent to win.
Jay, this is your job now but you had zero success in your hockey career. You never got close to a cup either. What you're saying isn't from experience or reality.
The cup winners of the last decade are tough and dogged but they also have incredibly skilled players. Trade one of Matthews and Nylander and there won't be enough skill to pull it off. Therefore the right answer is likely a rebuild as this team just doesn't have it in them.
I get the team hasn’t been successful but it falls on much more than just Auston and Willy… Mitch and John were there too, and so was Reilly so its hard to argue that all 5 of those high draft pick talents were simply incapable of pulling through in the biggest moments for almost 10 years. Yes, of course they coulda been more clutch in big moments, but when your playing in the strongest division in hockey for the last decade going up against Stanley cup champions every year it’s difficult to get to the promise land without depth….
Barkov can go an entire series and get 3 points but as long as the panthers win people won’t bat an eye and instead will focus on how good he was defensively at shutting down the other teams big guys… well when you have a teams as deep and solid throughout a lineup as Florida (Marchand, Lousty and Lundell on the third line), you can generate enough offence that on any given night any line can be the deciding factor…
I’ll speak on Matthew’s because frankly I don’t like Willy I think he’s lazy and defensively irresponsible, but when your looking at the talent we’ve had over the last 5 years on the leafs, it hasn’t come with any sort of supporting cast even remotely close to a team like Florida or Tampa… Matthew’s and company have had to be the guys in basically every game (regular season and playoffs), and when your going up against Florida in the playoffs who can run all 4 lines and be dangerous, depth matters!
Without depth, the leafs get themselves in a situation where Florida knows they can outcompete the bottom half of Toronto’s lineup, and so they can afford to put both of their selke finalist forwards up against the Matthew’s line all night, comfortable knowing if they cancel each other out their depth will outperform against Toronto’s…
Of course Matthew’s isn’t completely innocent, but I think management has significantly mishandled this team and not given its star players a supporting cast good enough to compete with the best teams in the league.
If you wanna trade Willy and get a good package back (perhaps a true number 1 defenceman) I’m all for it, but the Auston Matthews’s slander has gotten a bit out of control… he’s literally the most talented player to ever wear the blue and white, the best goal scorer of this generation, while also being a selke finalist and one of the best 200 foot centres in the game… he’s the kinda guy you build a team around, and if he ever wins a cup here, hes the one that’ll get the statue outside of Scotiabank… to get rid of him would be ludicrous!
Well say Rosey! Skill doesn’t necessarily win championships. This is evident the last 15 years in this league. You need some skill, but the skill players need to work and play with heart and give the team a chance every year. I agree both Mathews and Nylander are not the guys that are going to get you there. Wendel Clark was the last guy who got a team even close, and only Gretzky stopped them. We need a Clark, a true leader, to be able to score when needed, lay the big hit, stand up for his teammates, and demand that everyone else does the same. This team does not lack skill, it lacks true leadership.

Shanahan is responsible for all of this. His stubbornness to not deviate from his plan has set this team back years. Is Treliving the right guy to be able to make drastic changes? If not that’s a bigger problem. Pelley was brought in for a reason. He’s a smart guy so let’s see what he can do.

It ain’t rocket science! He treats every game the same, be it a September exhibition match or a game 7…with complete indifference and zero passion. He just wants the goals to solidify his personal “brand” and the fame and fortune it brings him. The team and a Cup are not even on his radar. You wanna change the culture? When the skybox is full of guys constantly it’s hard to get things going especially after losing our play driver in Marner I know things have been bad but I think when the team is healthy they’re in the playoffs
This franchise has auto-pilot set to crash into the mountain. Should have hired Hunter over Dubas. Should have traded Nylander over Marner. And for gods sake you don't hire a coach for one good season which was really down to a goaltender having a career season.
