Can I suggest we just never trade with Boston ever again? Like pleasseeeee
Good for him. I hope he continues to improve.
Is this a serious question?
Pain
The Carlo trade was bad from the beginning, and it gets worse with age.
Shanahan fumbled this era of Leafs hockey, and I have no faith that this management group can salvage it.
We need draft picks and prospects. We need to turn some of them into real NHL defensemen, because this organization has shown they’re completely incapable of that for the last two decades.

lol
No they don’t
Can we stop with this? We got it. It was a bad trade. Time to move on. We don’t need to live track Minten’s every movement.
The Maple Leafs should have an orientation for all incoming GMs that’s basically just a slideshow going over every trade the Leafs have ever made with Boston to stop them from ever attempting one again. I’m just so sick of that franchise making asses of us constantly. Just stop doing business with them for fucks sake. There’s 31 other teams I’d rather lose a trade to than Boston.
He’s also getting wayyyyy more opportunity than expected in Boston. Elias Lindholm was hurt, Morgan Geekie left the team for the birth of his child, Zacha’s been hurt. Boston’s hurting for centres, and Minten’s been good in a top 6 role even though he was only supposed to ever be a bottom 6 guy according to the infallible talking heads at tsn and sportsnet
The revisionist history on Minten is so funny to me. Everyone last year was saying this guy tops out as a 3rd line C. I was always higher on him than most people.
The professional hockey team of eternal torment and despair

Treliving’s been clueless since we hired him
Ok, this trade was never good. But, in Treliving’s defense, it wouldn’t have looked so bad in hindsight, maybe even if the Leafs had only gotten past Florida last season.
When they went up by 2 goals in game 3 against Florida, it was the first time since maybe when I was a kid in 93 that I thought they were actually could win the whole thing. They were clearly outplaying the defending champs through 2.5 games.
Then of course they blew it.
Act like you’ve been here before man
Treliving is a idiot and the fact we fired Shanny but kept his GM was also stupid lol
It was a bad trade. We all know that. But who was behind it we will likely never know. Did Shanny push it knowing his deal was ending and the only way it got extended was with a deep run, and also knowing it was the last season with Marner?
Good for him. I liked Minten.
The Leafs need to trade UFA’s/etc for picks/prospects. I hope they do. However, I don’t trust Treliving to do that.
No they certainly do not. I was totally pissed when they traded Minten and a 1st rd pick for Carlo.
He would never of had that opportunity in Toronto. Like many players who excel in other markets, they are either parts of rebuilds or dont have a team using the term Core 4 which also applies to the minutes they get.
Rookies and Marlies rarely get the opportunity to play meaningful minutes on lines thay could highlight their skills once they get an opportunity. Until the team quits trying to fix things through trade deadline rentals and over the hill free agents it will always be like this.
Tough to evaluate. He’s a good prospect but no guarantee he’d do this on our team.
Different roster, different opportunity, different coaching, different culture.
In general though? I don’t have much faith in our management. They haven’t earned it.
Listen I know it’s easy to shit on leafs management right now
But most of us were for this or at least thought the trade was fair for a top 4 dman, revision history is always so easy

Objectively, you shouldn’t lose a Brandon Carlo for Fraser Minten trade. The Leafs are cursed.
There is an alternate timeline where the board chooses Dubas over Shanahan.
1. Marner is traded before his NMC kicks in. He said as much in his last press conference. Those assets help the team stay competitive. Return would be much higher than just Nic Roy.
2. Brad isn’t GM. The Minten for Carlo trade never happens. Dubas wouldn’t trade two assets of Wes Clark’s (Minten and the 1st) for nothing. Whereas new mgmt are never as bullish to keep prospects they never picked themselves or have as much scouting knowledge on.
3. Berube isn’t coach. We play Keefe style hockey instead of dump and no chase hockey. The team is likely less slow because Dubas knows what kind of play style Keefe uses.
Even with the many flaws of the Dubas era, this would have started our retool 2 years ago instead of now. His main flaw was signing high AAVs and the cap not going up as expected. Now the cap is actually going up. The assets from trading Marner would have been much better than whatever we’ll get from OEL, McMann and co. And these assets would have 2 years to mature/develop or get spent to better the team in Matthews’ and Nylander’s prime.
Imagine getting paid millions to make mediocre decisions lol
Treliving is also the same guy who let Gudreau walk for nothing and the Tkachuk trade.
That being said, the conversation has apparently been had and with AM34 and which point he said he’s 100% committed to the Leafs…so at least we have that
This management only knows how to make me not want bandera bread anymore – and that shits delicious
No. That’s why trusting them to do the next trades is very hard.
Boston somehow trade rapes us everytime we pick up the phone.
This maybe an unpopular but after the glaring lack of effort after Columbus and Montreal playoff series, I think Shanahan- rookie president, and Dubas-rookie GM, and Keefe-rookie coach, should have all been fired. All of them.
And Dubas hiring his buddy Keefe without hesitation was brutal.
When has anyone ever accused the Maple Leafs management of ever doing a good bit of business that actually favours the Leafs? Ever
It was such a bad trade. Minton plus a 1st for Carlo was a horrible deal. It’ll only age worse as Minten is the young player you’d want as part of a rebuild. Drafting players in the second round are always a dice roll.
This is beatin a dead horse. Can we quit these now ?
No
The thing is, to an educated fan, this was an extremely obvious outcome.
Minten was loved by every coach he ever had. Captain material wherever he goes. Does all the little things right. It was clear the rest would catch up.
Conversely, Carlo had been in steep decline for 3 years. At the time of the trade, he was providing about 1.8m of value against his 4m aav – yet Leaf fans applauded Tre getting 500k of salary retention.
This was a player that was worth a 3rd at the deadline, and would likely have to be given away in a summer deal.
None of this was hindsight analysis. This was all known in the moment.
Brad needs to be fire on that trade alone
Back when people were praising this trade, I said it was bad then got down voted bc minten was projected as a 3rd line center.
This is Phil Kassel for Hamilton and Seguin all over again
Anyone with half a brain knew how atrocious this trade was the day it happened, and somehow it just keeps getting worse, and will continue to get even more nightmarish 😭
This exposes the deepest flaw with the Leafs. Collecting several overpaid stars with full NMC effectively prevents you from giving ice time to allow others to show potential. It is absolutely insane that as fans, many were cheering Rielly getting injured last night. How sad is it that only an injury will allow the team to explore different combinations?
Honestly, I think full or even partial NMC’s have ruined the sport. The only players who should have this are a small handful of league legends who have earned it.
Psychologically, how depressing it must be to play D for the Leafs through the last few seasons of Rielly’s decline. You are watching someone shit the bed over and over, yet still get top lines and top minute opportunities. Arguably, it isn’t good for the team, and it isn’t good for Rielly. Everyone here thinks the solution is easy peasy (stop giving Rielly ice time), but think about the media shit storm that would explode if a coach keeps benching a star player contracted until 2030. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.
I miss the league where players had less protection. It sure made so many more trades possible, and I always found that exciting as a fan.
I knew that Carlo trade was bad…. Just never guessed how bad…
Here is a handly little list of talents other teams drafted using Toronto picks.
Seth Jarvis (2020 1st-round, 13th overall to Carolina via Marleau cap dump trade)
349 GP 119 G 134 A 253 Pts
Sam Steel (2016 1st-round, 30th overall to Anaheim via Frederik Andersen trade)
473 GP 56 G 109 A 165 Pts
Sean Durzi (2018 2nd-round, 52nd overall to LA via same Polak/Spaling trade to Sharks)
216 GP 21 G 87 A 108 Pts
—
Sam Rinzel (2022 1st-round, 25th overall to Chicago via Petr Mrázek cap dump)
Age: 21, top prospect in CHI system, projects as top-4 potential.
Otto Stenberg (2023 1st-round, 25th overall to St. Louis via O’Reilly/Acciari trade)
Age: 20 middle-six upside, ranked in top-100 NHL prospects midseason.
This is precisely why there is no future for this club at the moment.
Treliving needs to go. Upper management also needs to go.
They then need to give the GM full autonomy to wheel and deal to rebuild this nightmare.
Until that happens, the team is going to continue to go down the shitter.
Yeah we know. This team is stupid. Maybe the stupidest.
Haven’t for a long long time.
I’m tired boss.
