So its legit nothing lol.
No change to the standings in the west
I’m shocked it’s essentially no difference. I guess we can all stop whining
Wow, the Canucks are still magnificently awful.
People will argue there is no difference. But. Would teams play differently knowing they could snag 3 pts? Especially against division opponents. Would we see more intense hockey?
Panthers moved up so I’m okay scrapping this plan forever now.
It’s irrelevant anyway. Teams play a different style to get the extra point when it’s a tie game, as there is no current incentive. A simple conversion doesn’t account for that.
The Pacific is still hot garbage
So while « who » makes the playoffs doesn’t change, who they play changes allot in the east.
If we started tomorrow,
Tampa – Boston
Carolina – Buffalo
Montreal – Detroit
Pittsburg – Islanders
With the 3-2-1, it changes to
Tampa – Montreal
Carolina – Boston
Buffalo – Detroit
Pittsburg – Islanders
Notably, Buffalo gain barn advantage and Montreal loses it.
Avs still top of the board.
Good times.
Been a weird year for parity, would be interested to see the last few years.
When Babcock was our coach, he played for that otl like his life depended on it
Ill do you one better. Goto Wins/Losses and scrap the point system all together
The point system is fine.
Just go back to overall conference standings for playoff spots
The thing that gets lost here, and in most discussions about this topic, is I am quite certain the games would be played differently under this format. Less sitting back late in games for the extra point. Also worth noting the Ducks are tied with Seattle in points in the current system, but under the 3-2-1-0 format are 3 points back. At least according to this.
There are obviously other differences not shown in these graphics. It’s not just placement differences, it’s widened point gaps in places. That again would have teams playing differently than they do currently. More likely leading to more aggressive games instead of teams sitting back. Dallas going from 1 point back of Minnesota to up on them by 6 is a significant change that most of us likely just brushed off cause all the slides show is +1 for Dallas.
The NHL needs to change the playoff format a lot more than they need to change the way teams earn points in the regular season.
I think most of the people who advocate for a 3-2-1-0 format actually want the standings to just be decided by wins and losses, even if they don’t realise it.
Also, thank you for going through the trouble to make this.
I thought there was a mention about Atlanta for a moment! (it says ATL)
Even though it doesn’t change the teams in the playoffs, I would still prefer this system. Along with a 1-8 playoff format we would have:
East
Tampa vs Montreal
Carolina vs Boston
Buffalo vs NY Islanders
Pittsburgh vs Detroit
West
Colorado vs Anaheim
Dallas vs Seattle
Minnesota vs Edmonton
Vegas vs Utah
Canucks still 32nd! LETS GOOOOOOOOO
1 point for a win. 0 points for everything else. It’s really that simple
Correct me if I’m wrong, but haven’t some players voiced their opinion that they don’t want that as it could lead to more injuries or something? I believe MacKinnon was one of them that said this.
