Honestly, absolutely. But, fuck John Tavares; he isn’t hated enough for what he did
91 and JT. It definitely felt a bit on the nose.
Yes and I love it
I hope not, because that’s so unbelievably disrespectful to Butch and Tonelli.
You’re uncle is def a drunken conspiracy theorist but here’s also correct
Goring retired in 1987. The dynasty guys all had their numbers retired in the 90s, with the exception of Trotts who waited until 2001 and there are rumors as to why his was so much later.
And then Goring and Tonelli, who are now 2-3 decades away from their careers, suddenly get the call in 2018? I think your uncle is onto something. They could’ve been retired in the 90s with the rest of them. But they weren’t. And then the timing is… suspicious to say the least.
Not going to lose sleep over it. I just hope we never have to retire Steve Regier’s number to send another message.
The only reason 91 was not already retired was because of the snake, then he left and the team started to move to retire 91 but I heard that a group of alumni said not without 27, I don’t have a score for this but I like to think it is true.
I think Butch deserved to have his number retired regardless of Tavares. He was widely considered “the missing piece” of the dynasty and put up really solid stats and provided a veteran presence. It also doesn’t hurt that he was the color commentator for 15 years.
91 being pajama boy’s number definitely played into, but Butch deserved some recognition.
The only mistake they made was not having the ceremony when the Leafs were in. They played the Leafs at the Coli on November 13th that year, that would have been the best date to do. Then we could see Fucko watch a jersey be hoisted the rafters with someone else’s name on it.
Of course it was a bird flip and rightly so. The original 91 is an islanders nation treasure and always will be.
Pajama boy is a snake until the end of his days.
There had been internal discussions about Goring getting his number retired prior to JT being drafted, since 91 was actively worn they pushed it off, with JT gone there was no longer a reason to delay it.
I was always under the impression the Isles wanted to honor Tonelli somehow, but there were some issues between him and the organization that had to be smoothed over.
With Butch, otoh, the timing seems way too coincidental. Does he get his number retired if it wasn’t 91? I know all about his impact on the dynasty, but he doesn’t even rank in the top 50 all time scorers.
Jts only got a couple more years. Hopefully butchie stays on promoting the toy department till he’s gone and they’ll be zero “confusion” retiring it when he’s done announcing.
If it was only becuse of Pajama Boy they would have retired 91 when the Leafs were in town.
The real question is….if Lee can somehow muster a cup before his islander tenure is up…would they retire TWO 27s to the rafters?
Glad to see Butchie and JT’s numbers retired – well deserved. That said, if you want some more fun conspiracy fuel, by all means, check out how far JT’s hometown of Milton ON is from 🐍’s hometown of Oakville ON.
They were both going to be retired eventually, imo. Especially Butch given the fact that he has stayed with the org for so many years after retirement. But the timing of it was 1000% an F.U. to Tavares, as well as an easy way for relatively new ownership to score points with the fanbase.
That’s a weird take when he lumps Tonelli into it.
Regardless, #27 and #91 both deserve to hang from the rafters. No dynasty without them, and they weren’t bit players on those teams.
While on the topic, #18 belongs up there too, and that needs to happen while he is still with us to celebrate!
