It’d be nice to draft McKenna and have a Canadian to cheer for
Its stupid. Ppl say it doesn’t work because it doesn’t work 100% of the time bit ignore how 15 of the last 17 teams tanked to get most their stars
People that say it doesn’t work either A) don’t get it or B) oversimplify it.
Is tanking a surefire way to win a cup? No. Is it a guarantee out of 32nd? No. Are you guaranteed to get a generational player? No. But you’re not getting one of these players without a top pick. You’re not getting to the top of the standings without difference makers.
3rd overall it is.
It doesn’t guarantee you success. But neither does any other method.
And after a decade of watching this team trying to “build while remaining competitive”, I would like to see them at least *try* the method that gives them a chance to get top of the draft talent.
Tanking does work, it’s how you get elite players. You need a competent management group to turn the team into a contender though.
Case opened back up.
Slaf doesn’t count as a real first overall. Everyone knew it was supposed to be Wright and Montreal were being trolls. It doesn’t make sense to consider him a 10A. It’s either Wright still, which yes is a disappointment, or a write off year.
You’ve taken that out of context. When people say tanking doesn’t work, it’s not that it doesn’t work, but it doesn’t guarantee you success.
Tbf the best player in Slaf’s draft is Huston. The Habs really lucked out in that draft…
Tanking will work it’s just a matter of getting the pick you want which it being the Canucks idk
1 got a cup in his 5th year, with one more year in the tank. One got his cup in his 9th year, after a few tanks (crucially the one getting Makar) and waa drafted 5 years into the tank.
The others are a long way from a Cup on their current teams.
Ok, what are the odds of getting first overall when you’re last in the league and what % of tanking teams are last in the league every year.
It « doesn’t » because of outside factors later on. But all else equal, the most effective method of obtaining potentially elite talent is still bottoming out and drafting at worst top 5 for ideally at least three years. Many of the teams we see jump to the mushy middle often are teams that try to accelerate their upswing too soon, and instead of getting that extra lottery pick, end up picking in the early teens.
It certaintly doesn’t help if you whiff on your top picks though. We’d be so much better off now if we had drafted Nylander in 2014, or Tkachuk or any one of the other top D in 2016. Even if those players wanted out, we’d receive surplus assets in return, instead of having Virtanen and Juolevi bust out.
It is, obviously, more than just acquiring first overall picks. You need to build a competent team around star talent while timing everything so you have a mix of good young talent with savvy veterans.
See Oilers.
You only need to get lucky once
So in 2016 Canucks were 2nd last and fell to 5th and in 2017 3rd last and fell to 5th
Fucking seriously? That’s your fucking proof? I support tanking, but your proof is a list of first overalls from different teams. It’s not like they were all selected by the same team.
It’s not that tanking doesn’t work, the problem is that tanking ALONE is not enough – you need competent management.
Canucks are two years away from having six all stars, Norris winner, Calder winner, calder runner up(MVP at the all-stars), and a Vezina candidate in goal…and they are in last place.
It is great to get good assets, but you must have a management who can actually use them properly.
Mckenna/stenberg, landon dupont next year, and whoever else after that. I just pray we get at least ONE first overall pick. I know kw how unlucky we are with the lottery
