I’m biased since I’m also a Swede and a Petey defender. But bare with me here. I think that the ice-time for Petey in this last game especially was more reflective of coaching incompetence than his performance on the ice. Even ignoring Petey there isn’t much that justifies Bratt only playing 6 minutes in this game or him not getting any playing time in the games prior to this (except for the first game). Why not dress Anderson if you know that Hedman can’t play? Forsberg also started as the 13th forward.. Why did Landy play in OT? Etc etc etc. So many weird decisions.
As for Petey his line was the best for Sweden in the first period, and they looked solid in the second period as well. Petey did have one rough defensive possession, but it didn’t end with a goal backwards and he still solved it. Not really something that deserves benching. Looking at some of the decisions… Did Wennberg really deserve to play more than Petey? Did Eriksson Ek who didn’t really do much in the tournament really deserve 10 minutes more than Petey. Was Landeskog really a better option than a rested Petey in OT?

This is clearly brilliant coaching. Just forget about Petey for a second, why does Bratt have 6:25?
Rendole66
Clayton Keller getting 4:44 is crazy from the US side, did he get injured?
Also surprised werenski isn’t second in ice time on d after Hughes
TruYu96
Should have at least played Bratt more than Landeskog.
Steler19
Sweden coach thought he was a genius but he was actually the complete opposite. Crazy how much more ice time Quinn got than the rest of USA dmen….they must think he’s that much better than the rest.

Oh, Sweden didn’t practice 3v3 either btw. Ot certainly showed.

Landeskog gets the seniority treatment playing 20minutes doing nothing…
amb1ance
Playing Pettersson and Wennberg more would not have been the right choice when Sweden was matching Eichel and Matthews with Zibanejad and EEK
The forward deployment is a wash because no one on Sweden’s forward group generated chances outside of that first line of Zib,Raymond,Landeskog
Nylander was eating up minutes against both Matthews and Eichel, and Pettersson and Wennberg’s line couldn’t keep up with USA’s 3rd and 4th line
The biggest problem with Sweden’s loss is how Bratt didn’t help bear the load of the 1st and 2nd line, despite being a net positive in chances on ice in the third. Also Hedman being sent to the shadowrealm but I’m not sure if that’s because he got injured
you can argue Pettersson should be the 13:22 and Wennberg the 9:00 but that’s honing in on the lesser problems with that qf game
It’s injuries, then it’s Miller, then Tocchet, then his wingers, then Foote’s system, and now it’s the Sweden coach
Or maybe, the guy is just a mediocre player.

Seeing Hughes’ ice times makes me sad. He is a legend in the making, basically a McDavid-on-defence and we couldn’t even build a winner around him. Everyone knows he is the real deal and he’s probably going to help the Wild win their first Cup and finish his career in the HHOF, then become a Head Coach in the league and then decades later be the USA GM.
UncleDingDongg
I mentioned in this sub weeks ago he would be benched in close games and have 10mins of ice time.

Not many GM’s can say they traded 5 Olympians (Horvat, OEL, JT Miller, Q. Hughes), ended up last in the NHL with one of the worst prospect pools and still keep their jobs.
Honorable mention to Benning for trading Forsling.
Fantasy_Puck
Petey won’t play in another Olympics.
PowerHungry1247
What happened with Hedman?
Fantasy_Puck
Everyone shitting on bam alam for some questionable choices (Bratt and Forsberg, in particular),but to play devils advocate he took a way better American team to overtime. And he limited their potent offence to 2 goals. On paper, Americans have the best defence in the tourney and are way deeper than the Swedes upfront and in stronger in the crease. I don’t think his deployment of Petey warrants the criticism of the two Swedes mentioned above.

Q Hughes – 27 mins
Miller – 13 mins
Petey – 9 mins
E lindholm – 9 mins
With the exception of Quinn, this team was screwed if you put any stock into these ice times.

ITT a bunch of baseless comments about « poor coaching » despite the fact they took the 1B team in the world to OT playing amazing D.
It’s like a Krispy Kreme Factory in here

Was Dahlin injured as well or did coach not feel like playing him in OT? He’s arguably Sweden’s best D-man, and you’re giving him the lowest TOI of any top-4 D?
Charlie2343
Landeskog out there way too much. He doesn’t play that much with the Avs? He was out there for the OT winner too
dunegig
Petey’s case aside, it feels inevitable that your players won’t have the juice to get it done in 3v3 OT when you shorten your bench to this extent for an entire 3rd period.

Like, how is William Eklund not on this roster over a lot of these guys 🙃

Bratt has over 6 mins of ice time in only the third period. Say what you want about Petey and whether he deserved more ice. But this Sweden coach’s deployment decisions overall were baffling
Safe_Garlic_262
Just imagine the defensive liabilities the Oilers have and seeing Broberg on the top pairing 😂
JoGuitar
Sweden’s Coach must have bet against his own team.
