>What were they looking for in something like that, in the Pettersson deal?
>I would imagine it’s a three-prong kind of return, like a current roster player now, a good young quality player, and probably Alex LaFerriere is kind of the guy in LA that they’ve got to dangle as 24 years old. He’s a winger, but he’s been playing center. Good eye for the net, first round pick, and then another asset, a prospect or whatever.
>But at the same time, Vancouver’s not going to retain on that $11.6 million cap hit. And if you move him to LA or anybody in the division, and he comes back and gets going again and bites you in the butt, you got a lot on your face that you got to clean up after the fact. So I think the Canucks are still willing to move him.
I just don’t know if, and he’s got all the say because he’s got that full no move, but we’ll see kind of what happens if the Canucks go that route. Like I said, I think LA is interested. I just don’t know if there’s really a fit there that works from Vancouver’s perspective.
>Yeah, that’s a very interesting one because the Canucks wanting to clean house, trying to get his to rebuild, to get McKenna, whatever that looks like.
text is kinda mangled because it’s a podcast, however it sounds like Vancouver wants three assets: a good young (roster) player, a 1st, and then another future like a prospect and they won’t retain.
LA is a place I can see Petey being ok with going to
Less pressure, nicer weather, his wife likes it
He’s not going to be moved unretained, so if that’s what we want better get use to him. We shouldn’t retain either that’s a lot of dead money to bare.
Good luck getting that for him right now.
I think we need to realize if we’re going to trade him, the return won’t be great due to where he is right now. Wouldn’t be surprised if a change of scenery made him more motivated though. Something has been off with him for years.
If someone offers a 1st and another asset you take it
Getting off that contract without retention is worth eating a lesser return
I mean I would understand if they moved in to close a chapter on a real toxic era of Canucks hockey but I personally don’t see EP40 as a problem player, and even if he’s overpaid by a fair margin, I think he can be part of the new McKenna/Stenberg/Verhoeff era. Even if he’s a 60-70 point guy you need high end talent for this next crop of players to gel with.
I believe Pettersson can be that game breaker again, just maybe not on Vancouver, and that sucks.
LA’s 1st rounder is currently sitting at 11th overall. That would be a decent centerpiece for a deal.
Very lukewarm on Laferriere but maybe a roster player needs to come back to make the cap work.
But the three prongs could be anything! Heck they could even one day be someone like Elias Pettersson!
“I would imagine it’s a three prong kind of return”
I don’t give two shits about his imagination. It’s pretty clear that we gonna keep him until someone makes it worth it not to. I doubt we trade him until we find a successor to the 1C spot so until Friedman says something it’s a big waste of time.
I still maintain that trading him now would be a mistake.
His value is the lowest at the moment. Better to wait and see if he rebounds instead of trading him for peanuts imo. And if he does not rebound then we can just keep him. He has said that he can stick it out through the rebuild and that it’s important to think about the future, wants to be here, has been described as a silent leader by teammate, place hard on both ends of the ice and blocks shots. Like even if he never returns to ppg form that’s still a valuable player to have and someone that players we draft can learn from.
Apart from that, his cap hit isn’t really a problem right now since we’re rebuilding anyways. Once we exit the rebuild, if he’s still here, that cap hit will be a lot more palpable for the type of player he is.
Unless we get a really strong package, I don’t think we should trade him. I’ve seen way too many comments that thinks a first+an asset is enough. Depends on the team and asset, but it most likely won’t be enough.
Hello Hockey? Who are those people?
Ok, so beyond being former players hosting “hello hockey” is there anything here that isn’t just conjecture?
If we end up not retaining I bet we get a 2nd and some middle tier prospect. In classic Canucks fashion
What team is going to trade 4 asssts for him?
Holland is one of the few GM’s that would waste any leverage he has in a trade situation.
Could definitely get a 1st, and whomever their best prospect is but they need to clear near $10 million in cap even in the summer.
Unless they can get Fiala to waive, kings would kill their depth if they got EP 40
So basically we’re going to trade a loonie that used to be a toonie for 3 quarters
He has trade protection so that’ll likely limit the field significantly and the return on any trade.
If we aren’t retaining, I can’t see even getting a first round pick back for a 50 to 60 point a year player who is making $11.6 million a year until the end of time.
I’d expect something like what the Rangers received for the Breadman from LA. Fans are massively overvaluing EP40.
Nahhh if we aren’t getting anything crazy I’d rather just keep him.
Honestly fair. Tbh I want petty to stay but completely understand if he wants to go somewhere else. Staying for one rebuild is one thing, but 2 is not somthing alot of players are willing to do.
Cap not 82mil anymore and 11.6 isnt all that bad when cap is going to be 113 and we wont be competitive for another 3-4 years. Hopefully if he does stay hell find form anx chemistry with a prospect
People are so quick to discard of Pettersson.
I understand he’s not what everyone expected, and he’s likely never going to repeat that 100 point season. However, his 2-way game has evolved significantly and he’s been way more creative this season.
Yes, the 11.6 million price tag is a lot, but people need to realize we need to be entering a full and complete rebuild, and cap space is used essentially for retention. Kane, Blueger, Forbort, and Kampf are gone after this year freeing up ~10 million per year. I wouldn’t be surprised if we move an older player on a longer contract (Garly, DeBrusk) which could free up another ~5-6 million per year.
Trading Pettersson now would be costly because of his cap hit. Teams calling will be asking for some form of retention, or would straight up offer less overall. It’s better for the team to keep him and hope his offensive output improves, and even if it doesn’t, most media points to him being a positive locker room presence. And if it comes to it, we trade him in 4-5 years when his contract is almost up and the cap is much higher. Typically the two-way game improves over the course of a career, so if Pettersson does choose to commit to being that elite 2-way center, that raises his value quite significantly.
There will always be teams looking for a top 6 center (look at good teams like Minnesota, Carolina, or Washington right now). If we shop Petey, it gives the market the advantage.
TLDR: Either trade Petey for scraps now, or keep him, reap leadership benefits, and potentially trade him for more down the road when he’s probably better AND the cap ceiling is higher so his contract looks smaller.
Another asset = previously drafted high end prospect.
Well… good luck to us then..
If we’re doing a fire sale why are we keeping JR/PA around. They fucked up this shit up royally, how many more years of this do we need?
I swear the only players the Canucks had that actually wanted to live and enjoy Vancouver were the Sedins. God I miss those boys.

Unless someone overpays for him, I’d rather keep him (for now) and see how he does with McTenberg. I want to see him with an elite play driving winger to play with before we ship him off, it will also increase his trade value if he start’s producing.
