It really seems like he’s trying super hard to convince everyone he’s totally MAGA. First it was like, maybe he was in the room with Patel but didn’t celebrate, then he might’ve called Trump « Don » and laughed at his misogynistic jokes but he’s not in the White House or anything. Then he might’ve been in the White House, but at least he wasn’t at the SOTU. Then he might’ve let himself be paraded around like Trump’s toy at the SOTU, but he’s not MAGA. Now he might’ve posed for a picture with another guy in a MAGA hat, but he’s not wearing one himself.

The fact that he is taking these photos while playing for a Canadian team is next-level dim-witted. I can’t even be upset. I’m just in awe of such blatant ignorance.
THIS is why people say that hockey (or any sport in general) isn’t apolitical. It’s because of things like this and people like Hellebuyck that inadvertently make it political. I’m sad for his Canadian team-mates. It’s one thing to be pro-Trump and MAGA in private but to endorse that brand in public while playing for a Canadian team is just really sad and tone-deaf especially when considering our current political climate. It’s just bad optics.
