This was always going to happen. I said it in another thread. By being the captain of the US, Matthews was dealt a shitty hand. He either attends part or all of it (and the fans are upset with him, I get it), or he doesn’t go and it becomes a HUGE deal in the hockey world.
Every headline for the next month in Toronto from the conservative rag (I forget which one, I’m American) will be dogging him. Fox News will be on his ass. It will be a nightmare for him and his family. That’s how far MAGA takes shit when you disrespect their President.
Plus, for the next year, at every visiting arena the Leafs play at, it’ll be brought up by stupid reporters. “Aren’t you patriotic Auston? Why do you hate your country Auston? Maybe you should move to Canada Auston”.
Plus what do we know about Matthews? He doesn’t like drama. This was the way with the least amount of drama. He “led” the team into the Oval Office, got the picture taken and is going to rejoin the team. Do I wish AM stayed away all together? Of course I do. But do I ever think that was realistically an option? Of course not.
