Shoulda kept the C on Tavares. I’ll die on that hill

Don’t like to get political, but they’re hanging with Patel as if he’s a make a wish kid, and attending the state of the union. Spare me.

  3. > »To me, I don’t like to get political or get into that stuff. Like I said, we’re proud Americans and winning a gold medal, it’s been 46 years since the men’s ice hockey team has done that, so I mean, the team that wins the Stanley Cup each year accepts the White House invitation to go, » Matthews said.
    >
    > »So I think it’s something that you do because we are proud Americans and whatever your political beliefs may be, hopefully something like this will hopefully bring more unity to the country and stuff like that. But for us, we believe it’s a great honour, no matter who’s in office. »
    >
    >Moments after the 2-1 overtime win over Canada, the Americans received a phone call from Trump in the locker room, where FBI director Kash Patel was celebrating alongside the team.
    >
    >In a video of the call, while inviting the men’s team to the White House, Trump said he’d have to invite the women’s team too or risk impeachment.
    >
    > »It was unfortunate, » Matthews said of Trump’s line. « We love the women’s team, we support them. The night we won the gold medal, we were hanging out in the dining hall until 3, 4 in the morning. So it’s unfortunate that occurred. We have nothing but love and respect for the women’s team and what they were able to accomplish, and it’s amazing that the men’s and women’s ice hockey teams are both bringing home gold medals for the United States of America. »
    >
    > »I think that should be talked about more than the other. But we’re extremely proud of them and happy for them and we support them 100 per cent. »

  4. Volderon90

Dogshit answer. “Don’t like to get political.” But we’ll go to a highly political event. This was NOT the team being invited in the summer. This was a pedophile propping a team up there.

  5. Booshay

“ »To me, I don’t like to get political or get into that stuff. Would a Canadian team go to the WH after winning the Stanley cup?

  6. Helpful_Golf7018

I wonder if he’ll get the MLK quote tattoo he has removed or if he will simply add « J/K LOL » to the bottom of it.

  7. CanadianGuy39

He supports Trump. That’s the end of the discussion. Take that for what it is.

I respect him a lot less now, that’s for sure.

  8. classic_gh0st

It’s a lose lose situation. If you don’t go, you have to be prepared for that to make a statement and that to become the conversation. Same if you do. It’s a PR nightmare either way. I hate the visual of him with Trump but I understand why he went and I espescially respect the choice to ditch the SOTU and particularly to be unambiguous about the slight to the women’s team.

  9. james-HIMself

Hey guys, let’s not make this political. *hangs out with kash patel and makes everything political*

  10. penguin44ca

The women’s team had balls. The men’s team disgusting me.

Now one gets a medal of freedom? Kinda makes it cheap now.

  11. PresentationOk3789

I don’t hate Matthews but talking about unity when trump is actively trying to divide the US is a little bit of a crazy take

  12. DevOpsMakesMeDrink

Incredible how many comments in here have no leaf posting history before the last few days or their comment history hidden

  13. freshnegatives

The White House visit comments are a naive take from an athlete but also, a reflection on society that we have failed to learn about the dangers of fascism which is very much taking root in the U.S.

The team attending the White House and the state of the union in years past would’ve been political also, and probably somewhat controversial regardless of who the president was, but there is no debating that this version of Trump is different and worse than even him in his first term.

So, while the goal of the players may be to set aside politics and unite the country, whether they appreciate it or not they are being used as political tools to normalize and elevate a presidential regime that is doing massive amounts of damage to their country – and to other countries, like Canada as well.

And that’s on top of all the creepy pedo stuff that Trump is also associated with.

Big fail, but not a surprising one, sadly.

  14. 2014olympicgold

Nah I don’t understand this « I don’t like to get political and stuff » stance because no matter what, attending a political building, via invite from a President is political.

If you didn’t want to get « Political » you could have went to the WH but not meet the President.

They have had the benefit of being quiet and avoiding all of the political talk until now because they got turned into a parade float for Trump. I don’t think they really realize what they did because everyone around them is just echoing the same thing. Get these players in front of real, intelligent people to discuss the problem, maybe it’ll click. But Matthews talking to Hughes’ and Tkachuk’s won’t hold a mirror up to them.

  15. Chrristoaivalis

Look, I DO understand the argument that visiting the White House after a big win is standard (and the USA wins at hockey so rarely that it’s a big deal)

But Auston needs to see the nuance that Trump is not only implicated in the Epstein Files, but he’s also specifically threatened the country he lives in most of the year.

Also, Trump was gonna weaponize the visit for political propaganda in a way other presidents wouldn’t

Even visiting the White House 2017-2021 (Trump Term 1) didn’t have quite the same implication as it does now.

  16. DougFordsGamblingAds

I’m not a fan of the whole thing, but I do credit him for not going to the SOTU like almost all of his teammates.

    * There were about 26 American players. 23 who saw ice time.

    * Only 3 players who got ice-time didn’t go to the SOTU: Matthews, Nelson, and Guentzelt. Even McAvoy, who is a registered Democrat, went to the SOTU. The three players who didn’t see the ice all decided not to go.

    * Guentzel was interviewed saying he wished he did.

Matthews was the captain of Team USA, and probably would lose that captaincy if he didn’t attend. He avoided Trump more than almost all of his teammates.

  17. LunchBoxMercenary

    Regarding the women’s team comment:

    > « It was unfortunate, »

That was probably the most anyone on that team has said about Trump’s comments.

  18. Hikingcanuck92

Matthew’s is Sally Bowles from Cabaret.

He is not politically engaged. The fascism of Trump and his regime barely registers compared to his focus on the sport, celebrations, or the drama of the moment. He represents the same mindset in Weimar Berlin. decadence and denial in the face of terror.

Donald Trump has ordered extrajudicial murders, has separated children from their parents with no way to reunite them, has pardoned violent criminals who have gone on to commit more crimes, is very possibly implicated himself in serious crimes. The list of what that shameful excuse of a human has done is a mile long.

The only reasonable purpose to go to a meeting with Trump is to personally spit in his face. Anything short of that is an act of cowardice and proved Matthews is a captain of nothing.

  19. Kid-Goose

So he agrees the comment made by trump to the women was « unfortunate » and agrees that needs to be talked about more but still went ahead to the whitehouse to buddy up? Sure man

  20. Drdonkeyballs

I’m going to enjoy following Toronto media after this.

  21. Skittleavix

If you didn’t want to get “political”, then you should not have engaged with politics and politicians. Full stop.

You said you didn’t want to do something (get political) even after you did that thing (got political). You even *sound* like a politician, speaking out of both sides of your mouth trying to please everyone and not ruffle any feathers.

Guaranteed nobody would have given this much of a shit if you didn’t attend. Trump probably wouldn’t have even noticed your absence.

Know what would have been better? If you just owned it. Like, just admit you enjoyed meeting Trump and all the criminal shitstains surrounding him, and that it didn’t bother you.

At least then you’d have been honest. At least then you’d have preserved some integrity. At least then you’d have behaved like an overpaid captain of a NHL hockey team.

  22. 123Disneyfan

I don’t know, it really feels like there was no winning for Matthews’ in this situation. He’s in an incredibly tough spot as captain, balancing responsibilities with Team USA and the Leafs. I think he tried to be mindful of both sides by showing up at the White House with his team in his role as USA captain/citizen, but then skipping the State of the Union as a way to maintain good faith with his Canadian team. He’s clearly hoping people see it as him representing the US, not as an endorsement of or involvement in politics and the orange man. Take what you will, I guess…

  23. EquinoxClock

Notice how when addressing the comments about the women’s team he completely avoids criticising Trump for it. He just keeps saying « that was unfortunate » as if it was some freak weather event that just happened out of the blue that no one was responsible for, and then saying « we were in the dining hall with the women after we won » as if that means anything. He absolutely does support Trump, it’s obvious.

  24. hex-grrrl

“Don’t like to get political” aka “I’m a republican but too embarrassed to admit it.”

This man has an MLK quote tattooed on his ribs and still had the audacity to shake the hand of a man who posted a video of the Obamas as apes TWO WEEKS AGO.

No morals, no convictions. Just allowing themselves to be used as political pawns in Trump’s political theatre.

The only thing that keeps me sane through all this is knowing that the whole ordeal has been heavily documented. History will not be kind to those who sucked up to a racist rapist pedophile.

  25. redittraffickskids

« Low IQ professional athlete attempts to have cake, eat it too »

  26. Auston Matthews, captain of your Toronto Maple Leafs, a supporter of pedophiles and people who want to take over our country.

You’re a clown if this doesn’t piss you off.

  27. MooskeyinParkdale

Well I am at least glad he referred to the comment from Trump about the women’s team as “it was unfortunate”, then sang their praises. Better than the lack of accountability and gaslighting from the Hughes brothers.

  28. NoVictory9590

Can’t wait for next week when all this shit gets dropped.

  29. Bananaslammma

“I don’t want to be political”

*Gets an MLK quote tattooed on his chest*

  30. unimpressivegamer

I find the “I’m not political” people are usually people with bad political takes that are afraid of the backlash.

  31. Gold_Carrot4807

It’s very likely he’s voted for Trump. Multiple times.

  32. Old-Show9198

Chumming with a diddler. Awesome!!! Something for all the kids to look up to!! Such a great role model with high standards!! Boot licking POS

  33. Sideshift1427

I wonder if Matthews realizes that his mother represents who MAGA is trying to deport from the country whether she came to the country legally or not.

  34. Dangerous_Seaweed601

You had an option, sir. You could have said « no ».

  35. Always_Chatting

That stink will stick on all of you for a long time! And it’s very deserved! 💯💯💯

  36. Slight-Philosophy470

I can see kind of what he is saying about the White House and the phone call. White House could have waited until the summer when the rest of the athletes usually go. Going to the State of the Union was too far. No reason to be at a political event and then say I am not interested in politics. No you are not interested in being outed as a pedo supporter.

  37. Murky_Writer4666

Honestly him and the Hughes bros saying « we’re close to the women’s team, we all partied to 3 am! » Is giving « I have black friends! I cant be racist! »

Well kudos to Matthews for at least recognizing it was « unfortunate » and actually calling them women. Instead of the » we got to know the GIRLS very well ». -Quinn Hughes in his horrible spiel.

They’re women, Quinn. If they WERE girls, Trump would’ve been actually interested in meeting with them. Silly goose.

  38. Stelliferous19

Well, it DOES matter who the president is, at times like this, when the president is responsible for the deaths of Americans, is stealing money from taxpayers to make his rich friends richer, and is stoking a race war by erasing black history, killing and deporting immigrants legally attempting to stay in the country and to top it all off, IS THE STAR OF THE EFFING EPSTEIN FILES. If you accept that invitation, if you willingly shake his hand and show gratitude to be around him, you show your true colours.

  39. irrelevantwhitekid

Pretty pathetic answer all in all. Just because it’s precedent to accept an invitation to the white house does not by any standard mean that YOU have to. It’s pretty straightforward, your president is a pedophile and threatening the country you live in. Don’t accept the invitation. Seems pretty easy to me.

  40. Shawnld12

This will be his last contract with the leafs( if he even makes it to the end of the current one.)

Just not a good fit for many reasons.

Management please plan accordingly. Sell High.

  41. Gambitzz

He made his choice, doubled down unfortunately and fans have insights now into his political leanings. End of the day, he doesn’t represent Canada, not Canadian but is an American being paid to play on the Leafs.

  42. HARRYSH0ULDERS

Austic Matthews is a f🍁ckin’ loser.
It’s wild watching the News and seeing America mistakenly confuse luck with talent. It’s no wonder their country’s hot…hot pile of dog sh🍁t.
