At least that Aerin shoutout was pretty classy

There’s no doubt that this is a public relations piece and no matter what Helle says, a lot of people are going to remain angry and feel slighted by his choices.

I’m not thrilled with Helle over what has happened since the gold medal game but I will defer to what Lowry said to Ken Weibe earlier this week [here](https://www.winnipegfreepress.com/breakingnews/2026/02/25/jets-proud-of-legendary-goaltender)

    > “Sometimes, it’s tough waters to navigate because generally, when you talk politics, unless you’re able to have a conversation and find some common ground, in these short snippet interviews and these small TV clips, everything can get skewed and almost picked apart to fit the narrative that the person is trying to have,” said Lowry. “Whereas, if you’re sitting across from somebody, you can have a 30- or 40-minute conversation and you’re able to articulate how you feel and really able to see the sides each party is coming from. Then you have context, you have nuance and you’re able to reach some common ground.”

    > “It is, and rightfully so, a very divisive subject. People that disagree on both sides and certain things that both sides would agree are unacceptable things we can’t stand for.”

There are some lines that shouldn’t be crossed but whatever your feelings are about what’s happened and the choices Helle has made, they are valid but don’t discount what others are feeling and demonise for them.

He hasn’t been overly political in his career, or during his time in Winnipeg, including now. People demanding others share their every opinion, or do everything they think they should do, is borderline political obsession.

Trade him for a package that sets us up for the future

  6. RepulsiveAnt9666

Blah blah blah I shook the hand of a rapist pedophile felon…what’s the big deal?

  7. JackBlackBowserSlaps

Ah, no, I don’t think that I will

  8. bannock4ever

So, as he explains, the men’s team used the woman’s team win as inspiration and then laughed at them after they won their own game. Okay…

  9. Bippitybop666

I hate that he said that all the controversy is taking away from the women’s team win. No man, it’s taking away from yours. Everybody is celebrating the women’s team more because of this if anything

  10. Soupfullofradio

it’s saying a lot without saying anything.

  11. Electroflare5555

The brigading in this sub is ridiculous holy.

Some of y’all need a hobby besides flaming a guy on a team you don’t give a shit about

  12. Agreeable-Fan-4498

Put whatever spin on this you want. He just showed us what kind of person he is. Being proud of your country is one thing. Being invited by a racist pedo who has made threats and still does to canada can FO. Done with this team for supporting him.

I’ve said it before, it’s sad that the USA don’t have a Crosby to help lead the kids and smarten the tkachuks types!

How was Karoline Leavitt? Did you get a souvenir MAGA hat too? You listened to Trump drool for 2 hours at the SOTU and still just say ‘it’s unfortunate how things happened’?

Hellebuyck is not an idiot like the rest of them, and is not naive to politics, if he cares that much about seeing the Declaration of Independence. He clearly endorses this administration through his actions. My 37 jersey is getting retired to the closet.

  15. Hero_of_Brandon

Personally, I would want to be able to tell my kids I did the right thing, even when it meant sacrificing something that was important to me.

  16. TheAsian1nvasion

I get why they did this – to get out in front, but I think this puts them in a worse position.

They arguably just took away all the softball questions so when he faces the media, he’ll be left with nothing but fastballs.

  17. I’m glad he addressed the locker room joke, but he immediately afterwards was “honoured” to be the star surprise guest of a state of the union that was rampant with xenophobia, transphobia, ICE loving and so much disgusting and vile bullshit.

Even if he doesn’t like Trump (which I highly doubt at this point) the very best thing he could he would be a privileged/ignorant spineless coward and I am so heartbroken watching this unfold. I loved being a fan of this dude but I have to listen to the pit in my stomach. This whole thing makes me sick.

As a lifelong Jets fan, I’ll always be proud of the team, and there’s no question that Hellebuyck is an amazing talent who has given this city everything on the ice. But honestly, I’m just so disappointed right now. It’s hard to wrap my head around him accepting a medal and standing next to a man who has actively threatened the country where his own children were born. I’ll always root for the jersey, and I recognize his greatness as a goalie, but seeing a local icon embrace someone trying to destroy Canada’s stability makes this a really bitter pill to swallow.
