Ok sorry not sorry this is borderline trollish but i find the Monty hate disproportionate to his actual play.

I do think Dobes is evidently getting better results and he should play most of the remaining games except for back to backs.

But Monty has not been playing nearly as bad as the haters claim.

  3. Builder_studio

People forget that Monty was top 5 in goals saved above expected last year

  4. commodore_stab1789

He’s 5-3-2, while being the main culprit in the 3 regulation losses (I won’t count the TBL game where he came in relief).

And that was a good stretch for him. I want him to do well obviously, but he’s not been good this year. Maybe it’s related to the injury he sustained in the playoffs last year? I don’t care. You just can’t rely on him, he lets in bad goals at bad times.

Dobes is a much better option. Montembeault has to be the backup.

The issue with Monty is that he seems to let in goals at the wrong time. The game vs the Islanders and the game vs the bruins come to mind but I believe there’s a few more. In both of those games he was playing very well and then let in goals late in the 3rd.
You can argue that it’s not always his fault but it happens too often, perhaps the team plays differently in front of him in those situations.
On the flip side Dobes will sometimes have bad games but then come in clutch late in games or in ot.

Alex Lyon’s just insane. Let’s see if it lasts. And what will happen to the Sabres if it does not.

  7. UnionGuyCanada

I am fine with our goalie situation. We have 12 out of a possible last 14 points. We are fine. I don’t see any trades that make us better, long term.

  8. SpaceWoodman

Sure…. if your expectation are that low. Monty is doing better than he did in the top of the season, but if why would you use 3.4 expected goal against per game as the standard in the league. Every other goaler in that list had better expectation, except one.

  9. jimmyvee11

How is posting a stat where he is ranked 13th of 16th a good thing?

  10. Chathamjedi

I trust MSL and Hughes with my entire being. Never thought I’d say that about management but I do. I am a fan on the couch. Simple as that. Love Monty. He makes amazing saves and probably why this stat you posted is favourable. I’d have to say from observation it is the goals he lets in that have seemed like the easier of the shots. That I think is the frustration part. Take the NYI games for instance. The Schaefer goal just skating around and throwing it at net seemed to be easier than some of the higher percentage saves. This is what just stays in the mind. The ughhh moments. Dobeš seems to make bigger saves when the game is on the line.

  11. HabsFan77

It’s not that he’s not capable, it’s the inconsistency that is doing him in

Our skaters also play more confidently with Dobes in net

  12. FamousLibrarian5573

The only stat that matters is he is 10-8-3 and Dobes is 19-5-4. What he has done in past years and what his underlying stats say mean nothing. The reality is, for whatever reason, the team wins at a much higher percentage with Dobes in net rather than Monty. That’s the reality. At the start of the season we were trying to run a goalie tandem of 1A and 1B, while it’s very clear now that it should be Dobes getting the bulk of the games and Monty backing him up. It’s just not Monty’s year, it happens

  13. We need the reverse stat, expected saves. Those are the ones he’s struggled with. :p

  14. I don’t think it’s fair to say it’s a narrative violation as if it’s not based on facts. In fact, I would argue that this post is more of a narrative violation than what other people say about Montembeault because this is only taking the last 10 games, one of which was a massive outlier on Feb 4 where he had a GSAx of 5.46. Six of those ten are still a negative GSAx. If we look at the whole season, Dobes is 36th in the league at 1.2 GSAx and Montembeault is 66th with a -3.7.

  15. Time_Zombie_4431

In the last ten he’s been decent but overall he has been very bad.

It’s not hard to see that. A season is 82 games not 10 and he’s gonna play around 50% of those games, in a quarter of his games he’s been a lil above average. That’s not exactly a glowing stat line when the rest of those games are bottom 5 goalie in the league.

  16. CafePisDuSpeed

Just goes to show why the haters are here on Reddit and not working for any NHL team

  17. a7xgemzy

Don’t care about the stats, but the timing of the saves is what makes ALL the difference between Monty and Dobes.

When a save HAS to be done to keep us in the game or keep a lead, Dobes does it. He may have let in a softie earlier in the game but dammit he makes the save.

Monty would let in a softie or a goal at the moment where a save HAS to be done.

Changes everything for a player, 100%.

  18. wickd_major

Such a nitpicky stat lmao. Do the whole season and let’s see how that list looks
