I mean come on it’s not like he’s making 10m+ he’s still producing to his contract value. 7m is a good price for what he brings

Ownership and the yes men he surrounds himself with.

Man… Kadri at 7m isn’t a bad deal, not a great deal, but Kadri at 3.5m is a very, very valuable deal.

If it doesn’t get done because of a lack of retention I’ll be chapped. We don’t need that cap.
cig-nature
So, we are using that slot for Huberdeau? He’s the only player we have with a higher salary.

It’s amazing to me that Murray Edwards can’t comprehend
Retention = More picks
You aren’t spending your money on nothing you are just buying additional draft picks which is what this org needs right now
TheJameskii
Does anyone know how many retention slots we’re using right now? Pretty sure we’re still retaining on Markström until his new deal from the Devils kicks in next season.
I could see Conroy wanting to keep a few open for flexibility and that’s why there isn’t willingness to retain on Kadri, but I’m not up to date on this.
randomname3415
Okay so we’re rebuilding and not trying to compete, yet we’re not willing to retain to get more value back because why exactly?
I can’t wait to see the front office defenders justify this one
itoadaso1
He’s worth $7m this year, sure. But in the 3 that follow this season? No contending team is going to want to invest that kind of cap into a guy that could end up being a boat anchor towards the end of it. At $3.5m that risk becomes much more acceptable.
Little-Aide-5396
What I’m getting here is the Flames handed out a bad contract.
Seawolf1121
This makes zero fucking sense. How early do we think we’re going to be competitive? In two years? We’re gonna be so far under the cap the next 4 years it’s not even funny. Retain half, get an extra pick. It’s that simple.
Chad_TreintaUno
I think they trade him in the offseason and retain salary then. Because the two salary retentions the Flames are using right now both expire at the end of the season, and they can make Coleman very valuable to a cup contender by retaining his salary right now.
Chemical_Signal2753
I don’t think the Flames are wrong in not retaining on Kadri but it might mean they have to take back salary to maximize the return. If they traded with Colorado they might have to take Colton to make a deal happen.
HgFrLr
I’d agree tbh, if we retain on him we better be getting a fucking HAUL, no reason with the cap increases teams can’t fork over the cash to pay for Kadri, sure his last year or 2 may be an overpay, but you can always trade him away then.
Clemburger
Gotta conserve that cap space for the the cup run next year
dherms14
retain some and get an extra pick, it’s not like we don’t have cap space to spare for a couple years lol
Beta1224
What do we need that extra 3.5M for? It’s not like we need the extra cap space right away anyways and we gotta hit the cap floor somehow.
This has Murray Edwards and Don Maloney written all over it smfh 🤦

Posturing people.
Posturing.
It amazes me that everyone is quick to be critical of « our valuable asset is valuable » statements.
I refuse to believe these people partake in actual hockey news.

Unfortunately our owner has no idea how to run a hockey team. This is how you stay forever mid.

So is there any difference in just pretending we are paying Cooley that amount instead of “paying someone not to play for us”?
What I mean by it is this: if we took the 3.5 million retained, and pretended that instead of paying Kadri, we were paying Cooley that money, would the higher ups care? Why does their ego start to get hurt when they have to pay to retain players? I genuinely think if we just shifted the wording around, but the money was the exact same, Murray Edwards wouldn’t give a fuck. But because it is “someone on the other team” or whatever, it becomes non negotiable. Just so frustrating cause you and everyone else knows that conroy would get a way better deal retained and we don’t need the fucking money. Maybe if we overpay a 30 year old again it will be worth the money
Dirtsniffee
cheap fucks need to sell kadri for picks and prospects and retain as much as required.

I think we can get more for Coleman retained possibly. I had heard about a possibility of Connor Geekie back from Tampa, but they are tight on cap space. I think getting 21 year old high skill scoring centre, that is 6’4, would be an amazing get for the Flames, but it simply couldn’t happen without retention on Coleman.
If a package could be put together with those players involved, what could you get for Kadri that is better? Other teams can figure out Kadri’s contract, Colorado, for one. We would get less back, but it would still be something. In reality, it’s the best thing to get back from. That deal is room on the roster for a younger player (Geekie?) and likely some awesome losses on the race to the bottom of the standings.
We don’t really need picks. We’ve got at least 6 1st rounders over the next 3 years, and any picks we get are late first rounder at best. If we could get a young potential star instead of a pick, I’m down for that.

Yeah this makes sense. I would guess they may have to retain on Coleman – or at least they’ll get a much higher return for him anyway and that will sweeten the pot. Kadri can still move in the summer, it’s a lot of term. Teams don’t love the last year. If he gets traded I’ll be super happy, but I could easily see it going to the summer. Cap goes up plus they’ll have 2 of 3 retention spots open again after Marky and Anderson come off July 1st.
BigBrownBallz
In other words, Kadri wont be traded cause no team is willing to take that cap hit, just gonna add another year to his age, drop his value even more.
