  1. It’s so amazing that he’s a way better person than hockey player. Who wouldn’t be proud of him. I just want him to succeed in life whatever that means to him. It’s been amazing to watch and a pleasure. I lost my mom in my 20’s and didn’t handle it as maturity as this kid. Nothing but respect

  2. I really believe outside of Carolina and Tampa I think we are no worse than any other team in the east. While I don’t want us to trade away our future we have an opportunity in the present. I’m all for staying as is this year and giving it a go. I don’t want to trade any future assets away. Resilience is just as important as any other team skill. Great video again Gil. LGI.

  3. Schaefer has been unbelievable. You said it, Gil Superman. The spark he brings has turned this team into a real contender, and when he’s in the starting lineup, it feels like they can beat anyone. There’s still work to do, and I’ll leave that to Roy and Darche, but one area that really needs improvement is clearing the puck out of their own zone. LGI

  4. I'd still like to see better defensive play as it was so obvious the Panthers were going to tie the score after Barzal and others couldn't clear the puck. We need to keep our expectations in check as this team is still not elite.

  5. New game plan: give up the first 2 goals. Their resilience brings to memory the old chant:
    We want chi-li !!!

  6. Thanks for the great podcast Gil you do a great job!
Question: most of them are obvious I know, but who are the 11 teams that you have above the Islanders?

  7. Good morning team! Gil, I have to admit, Lee and JGP have made strong cases for Darche to keep them on the roster. The level of play this team is reaching right now is even beyond what I thought they were capable of this season. What can I say about Schaefer that hasn't been said already? The kid is on fire and he is so fun to watch. Truthfully the whole team is fun to watch. I would rather this doesn't continue happening, but we can be down early, and we'll figure out a way to claw ourselves back. Three impressive games in a row. I love it! To do this to the Panthers on a back to back game makes it that much better. Everyone, have a great day! Going to be away for the next 17 days, in the southern hemisphere. See you all again when I get back. Until then.. Let's Go Islanders!!

  8. I don’t think he’ll win it, but hypothetically, if Schaefer finishes the season with 25 goals and 60 points, does he enter the Norris conversation as a fringe candidate THIS season? He’s tied 2nd in Goals among defenseman, playing almost 25 minutes a night, AND being responsible defensively. For reference, Lane Hutson finished 9th in Norris voting last season as a rookie, and is not nearly as strong defensively.

I could see Schaefer getting some 4th/5th place votes.

And still on his ELC for 2 more seasons. Safe to say the rebuild is over, and they can definitely take a big swing to capitalize on the open window 😁

  9. I'll be honest … I didn't expect the Isles to win the game against Florida. More due to the schedule than ability. After the first period I pretty much felt I was right. Then Schaef-daddy answered the call once again.

As for the team, this is where we could see them become shrinking violets as the rubber starts meeting the road. But, the last 3 games strongly suggest they want to rise to the occasion. Very encouraging.

  10. for the life of me …please explain why roy plays drouin over duclair. So if the argument is that drouin plays a 200 foot game……..did drouin prevent 8 goals in 8 games like duclair actually did score 8 goals in 8 games? hell no. This is a results oriented business and and drouin has been a total floater.

  11. What a move & goal by Lee last night. Reminded me of another late game goal he willed in during that long road trip in the beginning of the season. With that said where has this been the other 50 games? What we saw last night was the product of being off for 3 weeks not what we can expect from Lee come playoff time.

Trade him now while he has a goal streak going and the deadline is approaching.

  12. Gil…while you stated that Sorokin and Shaefer are the best players on this team, it’s important to consider the work done by Barzal, Holmstrom and Horvat. They are in the middle of everything that happens offensively. I was one of those fans down on Barzy. Turnovers, horrific penalties, etc. His game has improved dramatically this season and I’d like to see him get credit for his work.

  13. The question is not should Schaeffer win the Calder, he does. The question should be does he also win the Norris and the MVP?

  14. The sky is the limit for this kid. Watching hockey for a long time never have seen an 18-year-old do what he can do. I think now you have to add because this team deserves a chance to go deep into the playoffs. Plus, the owners need the revenue and the longer they go more players will want to come here to win.

  15. What a victory. 5 in a row, the last 3 are come-from-two-goal-down victories … AND we beat the Sov — the Canadians eight days ago for the Gold medal. Queue up "Freebird". 😆 Great week to be an Islanders fan. LGI

  16. Gil — I think the two-week break did wonders for Schaef. He seems much more loose out there. Confidence overflowing. Seems fresher.

  17. Hi Gil! We can dream can’t we? I mean I’m beginning to dream! The kid has changed everything! Bringing in the crowds, the young kids! He elevates everyone’s game. He challenges his teammates to be better. He has Bo and Barzie truly energized! Sorro is back! Geez Gil, what do we do now with JG and Lee? Their value has risen bit I’m afraid to break up this crazy chemistry. There is no guarantee the avs late 1st rounder will be a good player. Maybe take a gamble and add Foligno who is pure sand paper and can take care of himself and one of the blues players? I’m tempted. Number 1, Danny Nelson, and something else? Can that get it done? No Eiserman, no Aitch and no Eklund . We do have a couple other kids that are very appealing. They’ve added Magic to their arsenal——they deserve a chance to go for it! I feel if Darche stands his ground with nothing to lose and trading from strength, he may just pull off a doozy! Take care—-heck of a show! PS—-the kids won’t be ready for another year or two—-resign Lee for a year, no more than two? Give him a proper goodbye? Same or JG? I want to what’s best for the team but they are making this extremely difficult.

  18. Good 🌄, Gil. How are you? The Islanders did a fine job this weekend. They beat 🔵 jackets and declawed the 😺 yesterday. Matthew Schafer does it again. He has 20 goals for the season. He joins Denis Potvin as the only Islander defenseman to score 20 or more goals. He just gets better and better, especially if the game is on National 📺. Hero, Matthew Schafer. 🐐, David Rittich. Saturday's hero, Simon Hohlstrom. 🐐, COMMUNITY EFFORT ON THE PP. HAPPY 🎂, GILLES THIBEDAU. He assisted on all 3 of Mick Vukota's 🎩 trick in a win over the
Capitals. Hear from you later, Gil, but before I go, yesterday was somber for me between my father's death, and also the fact that it would've been my late husband's 64th🎂 yesterday, I did make a comparison. I compared John Spano to Fanucci from The Godfather Part II. Fanucci was an extortionist who walked around the neighborhood like he owned it. Spano was a fraud. They both got theirs. Spano got time, while Fanucci got his from Vito. First with a bullet to the chest, another bullet to the face so he wouldn't have an open coffin at his funeral, and the third bullet was in his mouth BLOWING HIS BRAINS OUT. Now, LGI🏒🔵🟠.

  19. The kid is simply awesome! Matthew Schaefer for Governor of New York. Another goal for MS, and three straight wins by the Islanders, since returning from the Olympic break. Pageau and Lee are making it difficult to trade them before the trade deadline. But, I've seen this play before. Move them both for draft picks in 2026. For the limited positives Lee demonstrates these days, his negatives are exponential. He's slow, and come play-off time, he won't be effective. Move him, and Duclair, and Pageau. Pageau should definitely bring back a first round pick in 2026. Whereas moving Lee and Duclair open up cap space for next season. I like our diligence. Many overtime wins this season, as opposed to last season and years past where we blow the extra point. If I were the GM, I would move the aforementioned, and stick with the rest of the roster. Maybe catch lightning in a bottle and get to the second round. Conference finals would be a shot in the dark. Regardless, we'll never beat teams like Colorado or Tampa Bay. Here's the deal: I'm enjoying watching Schaefer, Ritchie, and Heineman develop into big time players in the Islanders future.

  20. Matthew Schaefer could be a captain by the age of 23. Norris in the future? I would love to see his plus/minus high!!
