Absolutely they should. This season is gone, you need to get something and move on from aging pieces
Yes
If there is interest then for the love of God yes. We are not competitive and need to get younger and more skilled. Absolutely zero reason not to pursue this.
He’s looked a lot better this year than he did down the stretch last year. But I still think it’s time to move on from him.
I love Carly but he’s priced to move. Get what you can while you can.
I generally think he should be re-signed because the caps quite plainly don’t have anyone in the system who can absorb his minutes next year. But if we can get a first/ a high second for him I’d be open to trading and then bringing him back in the offseason as a UFA.
He does have a 10 team NTC so that could complicate things a bit
No. Carlson should and will retire a Cap. He’s only going to play for a year or two more.
I think saying no would be much more difficult if the organization’s prospect pool was empty but thankfully we’re far from that.
cap for life
I’m not trying to be a smartass here, genuinely wondering. What do we think the return is for Carlson? Because with his legacy in Washington, you have to expect a decent return for him. If we’re trading him for a midround pick or something, I say let him stay and have him walk in the summer over trading him just to get something out of it.
This sub’s hate for Carlson is drastically overblown. He’s been an impact player for longer than I can remember, practically. Chychrun is ready to assume that 1D role, but we need to be sure the return is worth it imo.
The team began talks. If those talks are close to a reasonable number, and they are close to closing the deal—they should finish the deal now and be done with it. He’s still valuable. And he’s an icon. Our blue liners will be a strength next season.
If the team and 74 are far apart—like he wants something close to his last contract or a much longer term than say 3 years—then yes, they should trade him.
Yes, it frees up a lot of cap space for a signing. This could be a statement of intent if we want to keep ovi another year. Or could be an opportunity to start building for the actual post ovi transition. Either way gives us flexibility without too much risk.
It’s a bit surreal seeing the vestiges of that cup winning team slowly breaking away, though. And I imagine having a veteran in the locker room like him is huge.
I think a good bit of us recognize it’s time.
YES
No
I am generally on the move everyone you can when you are middling (and make no mistake the caps are middling). That being said I think there are a few players on this roster you would only move if they want out as they have earned that respect. Carlson, OV and TW would be the ones who I would put in that category right now.
I would listen on absolutely everyone else on the team and in the system (inc. Hutson, Leonard, etc.). As a GM there should never be a player that you like so much that you wouldn’t at least listen on.
Doesn’t he have a no trade clause? It’s highly unlikely he takes the trade given his family and community involvement. I’d rather see him retire a cap
They should, but they definitely won’t

Every year.
You just don’t know.

If the right deal is there, sure.
I know he gets a lot of hate from our fan base, but he’s a very solid defenseman. His game also centers around good positioning and awareness rather than speed and agility, so he’s likely to age more gracefully than a lot of other dmen.
If there’s a way we can improve the team long term in exchange for Carlson, that’s something we should do, but we shouldn’t do it just to do it. He’s got a lot of value to this club on and off the ice.
He should and will retire as a Cap, but if he wants another chance at a cup, you gotta give him the chance. I’m sure they’ve had a conversation with him about it. I don’t see him leaving, regardless.
No one infuriates me more while watching the Caps play, but not a chance. Carlson has been incredible to the organization and having the perception that solid players can sign here and stay here for their career is a good perception to have for free agents.
Maybe, but they won’t. They’ll extend him a couple years and he’ll retire a Cap. It’s what he wants, and he’s earned it.
Ennn Oooo
Not a popular take but we’re not going to make the playoffs, or if we do we’re out early. We got a good young core but we’re still rebuilding. Unless management believes we can get more for our remaining pieces in the off season, absolutely nothing should be off the table.
The ‘if’s’:
They’ve talked to Ovie and know his intentions.
They’ve talked to Carlson and put him in the driver’s seat to destination. Personally, I’d want him re-signed after the season so I’d make that crystal clear and have the negotiation as close as possible. He can’t do his childhood fave since the Devils aren’t in play. I could see him as a Western team rental like Anaheim.
I’d rather a first and a prospect, and try and resign him. If he likes it here so much, he’ll go play somewhere else for two months and come back July 1. If he goes, it’s probably for the best. Next year we look like a lottery team regardless.
He’s unsigned, and can sign wherever he wants on July 1st. If he digs it here so much, why is this a fucking issue 48 hours before the deadline? Where’s the extension?
Vegas would trade him. Be like Vegas?
Who would eat his minutes though? I don’t see anyone realistically in that position yet. Resign him for 2-3 years max. And as sentimental as it is I think he’s earned the right to determine if he wants to retire wearing a red sweater
The ideal situation is probably move him and then re-sign him in the summer. But also depends on if the return is meaningful and what he would want to do- he’s earned that choice.
Why do you think we get for a 36 year old Defender in his last contract year. I think he stays, and the Caps don’t trade anyone
If Ovechkin is retiring, I don’t think you sell off the last of his running mates for scraps. If he’s going to continue playing, I don’t think you sell the last of his running mates for scraps.
Everyone serves at the pleasure of the owner, who seems to be very loyal to his longtime star.
Fire whoever came up with this idea and invest an NHL blacklist to put his name on.
If the Caps get a hell of an offer, I think they should take it. I also understand though that Carlson wants to stay and so at the very least, I hope they keep him looped in and avoid bad feelings. I remember the Orioles failure of a deadline rebuild back around 1999/2000 where Mike Mussina reportedly said he would refuse any consideration to stay in Baltimore over how he felt they mistreated BJ Surhoff in trading him
Make it HIS decision. He’a earned it. Simple as that.
It should be his last season anyway. We need to get younger 32>under.
If he was worth anything in a trade, sure. But he’s old, slow, and objectively shit at defense. He gets tons of assists, because he plays hard minutes. BUT he gives the puck away in obscene and ridiculous ways.
If the right deal came along, yes. I know Carlson fans don’t want him to be dealt. I totally understand. I hated when the those 80s/90s teams were eventually broken up too. Like I said I’m only open if the right deal came along.
He is worth far more to the Caps as a leader and as a face of the organization than he would be in a trade. The honest truth is that I doubt they would get much back to make a trade worthwhile.
There is no award given to a team that keeps a player for their entire career. If a team calls and gives the Caps a good offer (younger means faster), you HAVE to make the hard decision.
Carlson is a good player, but he isn’t what he was in 2018. Your team is only as fast as the slowest guy on the ice. We saw it in the playoffs last year, and the year before. History people!
Improving the team is the right thing to do.
To make my case even more brutal, I’d be disappointed if the Caps resigned Carlson for next year.
GM went from “gunning for a top 6 winger” to “take our tenured players” rq
Depends on the return. I think, and allegedly so do the Caps, that the return will have to be to good to pass up. If that’s the case, I’d do it. Use whatever you get for him to get a goal scoring winger in a trade this summer (or even this deadline).
No. Cap for life. JC74 💪
No. the 2nd round pick we get for him isn’t worth the damage it will do to the team culture and locker room.
Carlson should retire as a Cap. Also, it is really to trade an injured player for any value.
Yes. If St. Louis is getting a prospect AND a first round pick for Colton Parayko, Carlson should fetch one or the other.
We’re not making playoffs and we could get a haul for him. Who cares if he’s a “cap for life” his jersey is still going in the rafters. People on this sub don’t think logically at all
Only if the return is REALLY worth it. His legacy with the team is second only to Ovechkin and maybe Bsckstrom. If anyone deserves special treatment it’s him.
Yes
Finding a right handed defenseman that has a good first pass, size, speed, and a slap shot is nearly impossible in this league. We have had a guy that has had 3/4 at a truly elite level (and he is a better skater than people give him credit for) and the fanbase has spent a decade shitting on him. I find it very strange.
Not only should he retire a Cap because it’s fun and a luxury to have a lifer, HE IS STILL GOOD AND WE CANT FIND ANYONE BETTER THAN HIM! He had a renaissance this year, owing I think to Roy being able to eat some of his D zone mins, and when he goes down we have NOBODY to fill in! TVR? No. Nick Jensen? No.
Keep him. It’s the right thing to do, and happens to also be the smart thing to do.
