@Islanders de New York

    I agree.

Schenn will make a difference for the Isles.

    Keeping JGP matters.

These arent video game or fantasy roster players they are real people who bring their “grit” and team-first mentalities into an enormously resilient locker room.

Palat (another proven, clutch playoff performer) has been a huge improvement over (the just waived) Tsyplakov.

Drouin who has tried but was horrible for us is gone.

The emergence of Schaefer, Sorokin back to Vezina form, and Horvat playing incredibly well are all so fun to watch and cheer for this year.

I havent been this excited about being an Isles fan in a long time.

    Lets Go Islanders🧡💙

I think it was a good move, like you said, we didnt lose anything and it’s a sellers market so we were never going to make a big move without giving away a major piece.

  3. RICDrew

Thank you for this reasonable and well thought out commentary on yesterday’s events.

Drouin didn’t pan out. Darche took a chance on him and it wasn’t a good match here. That we were able to package him along with what is essentially a second and third round pick for a proven 2-3C with Stanley Cup winning playoff experience who actually approved the deal? That’s a win in my book.

This isn’t some franchise altering deal. We paid the price of admission to bag an NHL regular in order to fortify the roster heading into the playoffs. Simple as that. Still have our first rounder. Still kept all of our top prospects-

Interesting stat- Not including goalies, only five of 20 players selected 32nd overall (Presumably Colorado’s pick that we traded) between 2000 and 2021 have played over 200 NHL games.

    I’ll say it like this.

    Yes it’s an overpay.

No we didn’t lose anything tangible. Just opportunity cost.

Yes the price still hurts, but after you swallow that bitter pill… yes, I’m excited to see him out on the ice tonight.

Remember that according to Rosner this guy has had as many fights this season as the entire Isles roster combined. This is a player that finishes every check. This was one of just under 32 players on the NHL trusted enough by their teams to wear the C. This sub was complaining about the squad looking listless and nobody stepping up for Schaefer besides Mayfield Duclair and sometimes Barzy. You think the guy who waived his NTC to come here won’t do that?

I’m not trying to be corny or optimistic, but he really does have some great intangibles. Won’t move the needle but was it worth taking six years of Garland or giving up Aitcheson for Kyrou who, may I remind everyone, is insanely talented but was healthy scratched by the abysmal Blues team this season?

I posted this in the other thread but remember that COL’s 1st is almost certainly no better than 24th. You know who went 24-32nd, let’s say, 10 years ago? One Tage Thompson, two depth guys, and like nine complete nobodies who are playing in the AHL or in Europe right now. Quite honestly I dislike giving up that prospect more, but that’s the price we had to pay to fix the Drouin mistake. Which sucks but should be thought of separately, tbh.

Oh and if you really don’t like him try and flip him as a rental, no guarantees but maybe you find a team who loses out on every other option and is willing to take on a 3C for 6 mil.

I agree, i think if one of the 2 picks offered (preferably the first) was not part of the deal it would’ve been entirely reasonable price for the player we are getting. And to be able to offload Drouin basically makes up for the extra cost to me.

  6. SensationalM

i think Staple had the best breakdown of it, in a way that i hadn’t conceptualized myself

it was a late 1st (let’s be real, a 2nd rounder essentially) and Gidlof for Schenn, and then a 3rd rounder for them to take back Drouin’s contract

i also agree with Stape that having Schenn and JGP in the middle allows for Ritchie to move to wing since he’s not been great in the middle

  7. discofrislanders

They were allegedly looking for a Quinn Hughes package or maybe more for Thomas. That would’ve been something like Simon, Ritchie, Aitcheson, a first, and maybe one more piece. Not worth it imo.

  8. Forbidden_The_Greedy

This was a stupid move that felt like it was made solely because Darche felt he had to make a move. So much criticism about going for Garland but now we trade for an older worse player and everyone is happy? Make it make sense

  9. SundaeMobile9990

It’s a good deal only if the Isles make a run in the next 3-4 years. By then Schenn is 37-38, and if the Isles hadn’t made that run yet, the deal will start to look bad. Isles brass made this deal thinking « now » is the time for the Isles apparently.

  10. SundaeMobile9990

It was an overpay, but it got Drouin out and something very good in return. Sometimes you have to overpay a bit if it means getting rid of a liability and gaining an asset. And if Schenn fits in well with the Isles, it could prove to be an extremely good deal for the next 3-4 years.

  11. iwantcoffee29

Honestly, my perspective on trades has changed as I’ve gotten older. When I was younger, I hated when my teams traded away picks or prospects. Reality is, a huge percentage of those picks and prospects never end up becoming anything. Meanwhile, the proven guys you could have acquired with those assets would have helped the team.

Schenn is a known commodity. He’s a Stanley Cup champion, a captain, and exactly the kind of player the Isles can use in this playoff run. He plays hard, he’s not afraid to drop the gloves, and brings leadership. Not to mention him protecting and being around Schaefer is a big plus. Im all for the move- lets go Isles

  12. pb14mph

Just because Schenn isn’t a no doubt, sub-30 year old goal scoring top 6 forward doesn’t mean this isn’t a great deal for the team. We’ve been average most of the season except when Ilya and Schaefer take over. We’re falling behind too many times, we’re not physical, we can’t sustain forechecks often, we don’t have much toughness in the lineup. Ritchie’s shown flashes of what he will become, but he’s a 21 year old rookie under 0.5ppg playing on line 2 with a revolving door of wingers that aren’t contributing much offense. This can only help him grow.

We have a window with the old guard as long as Cal and Schaefer are on ELCs, and we’ll get an infusion of other ELC’s next year and the year after. Especially when you consider we’ve done this without Romanov and Palmieri (who may not be the same, but his game was never based on speed anyway) and they’ll be back next year. Adding another hard-to-play-against, physical, defensively responsible forward that can move around the lineup and give us a more formidable second line while also improving leadership, experience, faceoffs (which was already a strength) makes this a great add, especially when you consider what players like Nicolas Roy and Michael McCarron went for.

Does this make us clear cut cup contenders? Of course not. Does this fix our powerplay being too passive and lacking high end skill? Most likely not. Does this make us a better team, especially in playoff type games? Absolutely.

Keeping Pageau at the AAV he got when you consider what Dvorak and Wennberg signed for is just a cherry on top. I’m not crazy about Soucy over other D that maybe contribute more in the skating and offense department, but overall Darche did very well, and we should be able to move money out if needed in the offseason.

  13. Barzal-13

Trade definitely grew on me. Seems like a great dude, should fit in nicely with our group.

  14. Fishy_____Business

Depends how much they pay for him.

  15. Mojoswork

You hit the point a lot of people always miss: the key prospects remain. Most of your picks and prospects are trade fodder to begin with and that’s the pool Darche was pulling from.

  16. ICallTheBigOne_Bitey

If you’re going to use the mindset of « that late first isn’t really that big of a deal » then you could say the same thing about our supposedly key assets that were all mid first round picks. If we were going to buy and part with assets I would have rathered we just upped the package and got Thomas who would be a significantly bigger upgrade to the team and is 8 years younger than Schenn.

Trading assets for a 34 year old was pretty much the last possible thing we should have done. If it was Lou who made this trade this sub would have absolutely crucified him for it.

  17. PoetGroundbreaking36

He’s only got one arm though…..

  18. Terrible-Nerve-6819

But that 32nd overall pic and mid prospect!

  19. Beginning-Rush-49

    Pluses
    -Center depth is big
    -He’s a great leader
-He will back up our players
-Hopefully he will still have trade value in a couple of years if youth comes for his spot

    Minuses
-For a team that needs a lot, he seems redundant.
–Good capital spent on someone not fitting the teams real competitive timeline
–Good capital spent on a non goal scorer or play driver.
-A team in need of offense acquired a 28point forward

    C-
