Realistically, it’s because a lot of fans like having a scapegoat for losses. Last season when the goalies were performing well that was Matheson. Yes Dobeš has been better this season than Monty but the amount of outright hatred he gets is still absurd

Dobes is chaotic but he wins, makes timely saves and rarely allows a bad early goal. Monty allows a goal on the first shot 25% of time and on the first 5 (inclusively) 80% of the time. He lets in floaters and allows goals at horribly unclutch times like late when protecting a lead or right after we score a big goal. They both have bad stats but overall are not the same at all

Has this team’s goaltending been struggling? Unarguably, yes, during various points in the season. Is it the root of this team’s problem? It would be ridiculous to say so, especially because the Habs give up a higher-than-average amount of shot attempts and are also *terrible* at prevention defence – i.e., making it more difficult for opposing players to deflect pucks or seize rebounds.

The goals Monty allows cuts the wind from our sails, they’re somehow almost always at bad moments of the game for us and on low danger chances. Factor in that you know that every 4 starts your starting the game down a goal after the first shot then no wonder our defense plays worst in front of him, he doesn’t inspire confidence and that’s a huge factor that doesn’t show up on the stat sheet.
