He’s a college free agent this year, I’ve read there’s a lot of interest, like Tampa is really going after signing him.

    1. He won’t leave until Michigan’s season is over which could be April. So, doesn’t help short term.
    2. He’s a UDFA. I think he’s a good one save for his skating, but I’m not sure he’d immediately be better than JT Compher. There’s a reason he went undrafted. He’s also surrounded by unbelievable talent which tends to inflate numbers at a place like U of M. Lots of high scoring guys out of there amounted to marginal roster pieces. That jump is enormous. I don’t think this solves all of our problems. Maybe just allows us to try to move 27 or 37.

we already passed on the hughes i wanted, skip this one too

That’s not how that works lol. Have to wait until the season is over for them, and it’s also no guarantee he’s even an NHL quality player, let alone at center. Remember Taro Hirose and Ryan Kuffner? It’s rare the top college free agents turn out to be anything more than fringe NHLers.

I’m a Michigan student, I’ve watched all of his games practically, and he does not have the skill set to make the immediate jump from NCAA to the league. His skating is average in the NCAA.

This wouldn’t hurt but I think we need to go for proven NHLers. Proven = not only are they effective in their role at the NHL level, but they aren’t being forced to play a tier above their proven role. Copps probably a great 3/4 C on a contender, not a 2C.

I love NCAA free agent season. Free assets, who knows what they end up becoming!

This would be cool to see. We have the contract spaces too, I think we only need one the rest of this season to sign Plante after his season ends.

edit: also need one for Augustine and maybe Dylan James.

Or phil kessel for a seasoned one

Is getting him a bad idea? No.

Is he the solution to our c depth? Also no.

Would he “jump right into the NHL”? Not bloody likely.

Lotta kids look great in college and barely hold on to an ahl job. This guy is worth trying as anybody else, but our c depth problem is at the top not the bottom. We have Larkin who is fine at 1c, Copp who should be a 3c, and then Ras, Kasper, Nate, compher, ….all lucky that Copp is at 2c instead of where he should be, so they can have 2 spots to fight over instead of just the 4c spot.

We are loaded with bottom 6 centers and this Hughes guy would probably just get lost in that mix unless Nate or Kasper suddenly find a 2c level game, but then Hughes would still have to beat whichever one didn’t make 2c for that last spot.

If he wants to sign here? Great, but he wouldn’t really solve anything unless he was 2c good, and I don’t really see that.

But again, if he wants to come here and give it a shot? Great,

Fantilli is arguably our best Wolverine ever. It took even him a little while to be a meaningful player. I am glad for TJ’s contributions to Michigan hockey, but he isn’t solving any immediate problems for the Wings.
