Suspension reviews need to be a jury style review board. Let each team appoint someone and then when a board convenes it’s a random 5 person board to vote on an appropriate punishment. Make it so that teams on either side of the game where the offense happened can’t be on the board

The players union is powerful. They need to exert that power. Another great example where they could exert some control over *their* game is the goaltender interference crap.

See, it works here too. We can do the same thing with offsides reviews. I think, the players need to put their foot down on obvious issues with the game. Because, they are probably the best qualified to identify what is actually wrong, and how to fix it. Great example being Helly’s breakdown on goaltender interference.

It needs to be a 3rd party lawyer-type that has no ties to hockey and delves out punishments according to the rule book. Too many judgement calls about intent that are impossible to determine unless you can read minds. But, the NHL is a good ol boys club so an outside party will never have power over the game

I get the idea that the player’s association has a lot to say about how suspensions and fines go. If the players wanted stronger rules about this we would have it already, IMO.
The players and a lot of the fans seem to like the rough stuff. And things tend to go together. Not punishing players who inure others has been going on a long time. We can all list a bunch of players that are often involved with hits that cause injuries, who end up not getting a strong punishment.
I say if you injure a player with your dangerous play you should miss games for as long as that player misses games. Or, at least you miss games against that same team.
Leaving loopholes where a player can injure someone and get no solid punishment is a set up for someone getting injured. The next time the Ducks and Leafs play there will be some fights and some hard hits. I will not be surprised if there is a more serious injury coming out of this.

The problem is that there’s little deterrent for someone like Gudas to take out a star player like Matthews or Sid. He sits for five games, loses a bit of money and those guys are out long term, may need surgery and could deal with it the rest of their careers.
It’s not like the Leafs are good or contending, but what if they were?
