Other teams can still sign him even if hes at Leafs camp. He's not just auditioning for Toronto.
ZAR signed a PTO instead of a contract because the Leafs are clearly signing contracts to send to the minors. Before they go to the minors, they need to go on waivers. Once they go on waivers, the player has no control on where they land. By signing a PTO, if he doesn’t make the Leafs, he can then have the choice of destinations available as opposed to ending up in Arizona or some other bad situation.
Still need scoring depth in your bottom 6, proper 2 way players. If the playoffs when the top 6 are getting shut down, you'd need your depth scoring to come in. Typically all cup winners have this. To have a line that doesn't produce is just a dead line.
The leafs must decide if mete or been can give as much as holl if yes than move holl if no move kerfoot waive Clifford and Simmonds early in camp

Just fascinating, the negative spin about the Leafs being "soft", too top heavy, the defence not strong enough etc. Notably, prior to the playoffs, a handful of Tampa players including Stamkos & Maroon had indicated the 2 teams that concerned them most, were the Avs & the Leafs. Voilà, they were the 2 teams that gave them the most difficulty, with the Avs obviously prevailing in the final. Tampa was pretty beat up by then, but still went down fighting, just like the Leafs in round one. Vegas sports books have the Leafs, at this moment, # 2 behind the Avs in Cup odds. I believe Gaudette & Zach will make the team. Hoping Aston-Reese will sign with TO.
A PTO with any team doesn't always mean they'll stay with that team. They can just showcase their skill and bail to another team…
Remember Matthews is gone in two years. My bet is he is in Tampa. If the Leafs are not doing well before the trade deadline do you trade him? What are the chances the Leafs negotiate an extension? Less then 50%. Could be another rebuild after this year!
Nylander (but JT should ) need to get traded. And Jake Muzzin should be as well. The depth you would get from those trades would be crazy. It's all crazy how you didn't get DeBrincat for Nylander and picks. Dubas is going to be kicking himself for that all season. That trade made Ottawa playoff hopefuls but could have made Toronto Champions IMO.
They should try Nylander for Comtois, 1st in 2023 and a 2nd in 2024. If the Leafs can draft Fantili or Brayden Yager this year they have a killer 2nd line for Tavares to play out his remaining years. You would also be able to get a D upgrade or find a power forward to join the team now.
