I hate shootouts too. 10mins than 1 point each I think is a nice compromise since I dont think we are ever gonna get a 3-2-1 system

  2. >“I’ve always hated shootouts,” Ullmark said. “I’ve been a big advocate of playing 10 minutes instead. And if there’s no winner, you just go one point each. You go from there. You’re tossing a coin, sometimes, or have a bit of a circus act.

    >“Guys have been battling for 65 minutes, really hard, long season. I think there’s a better way of deciding who’s going to be the winner and who’s not.”

    Agreed

10 min 3v3 with an over and back rule. Done deal. Hell, might not even need the 10 minute

I feel where he’s coming from, although personally I love the shootouts. Feels very intense, up and down emotions. I hope it stays tbh

I hate the shootout as well. Such a stupid thing to bring into the league. 10 min OT no goals then tie

I say this as a die hard penguins fan: if you lost to the pens in a shootout this year, the problem is you. This was only their third shootout win this season (they got their second win just a week or so ago).

I don’t like the shootout, either, but of all the problems the NHL has, this is like Excedrin headache number 1,347.

Nah. As a goalie I know it’s a part of the game. It’s my role as a goalie to be on point, read the shooter, and practice those situations just as much as it’s a players responsibility to learn how to read the goalie and place their shot. Shootouts expose mediocre goalies in good defensive systems. There’s a reason shootouts used to be so much more electric with those full time starter goalies that were the backbones of a franchise. Now you’ve got guys complaining they have to stop 5-7 1 on 1 shots where they have time to read the shooter then entire way through with time to mentally prep and know that shooters tendencies.

First game I went to as a child ended in a 0-0 tie, and i don’t wish that awkward confused sporting experience on anyone

maybe i’m not a True Hockey Fan but i think shootouts are hype af

unlike “how the standings would look without the OTL point” (meaningless, the 3rd period would be played completely differently if that were the case, so keeping everything else as-is is unrealistic), doing a 1-1 split draw at the end of OT vs going to shootout seems like it wouldn’t radically alter how teams played OT. curious to see how “take away 1 point from every team who won in a shootout” would’ve impacted the playoff picture for the past few seasons

The NHL needs to go back to ties and 4v4 5 minute OT that is based on a 3 point win system, 0 point for any loss, and 1 point for a tie. The gimmick had its time and 3v3 is a joke now as is the shootout

Before overhauling overtime, officiating needs to be overhauled. The inconsistencies are awful.

If I had just given up 2 shootout goals to the historically inept at shootouts 2025-26 Penguins I would probably want them to change the rules, too.

  13. Odd-Most-9186

We need longer overtime flat out and put some rules in place to manage the issue of teams controlling the period by moving the puck in and out of the zone and not taking chances!!! Don’t know how they would mitigate that, shootouts are stupid!!!
    15 minute break after the 3rd and do a full 20 3 on 3!!

  14. Duece09

That’s the system we have, 100% guarantee he doesn’t whine if they would have won. Sens could have very easily gotten two points, but they didn’t, and now we are complaining. Everyone plays same system, once season is over then let’s have discussion.

I prefer shootouts. And it’s definitely not related to my team being better in a shootout than in overtime 👀

Shootout is dog ass might as well spin a dreidel to see who wins
