Which phase of the build is this?
– Patience
– Buy
– Sell and stockpile
I’d really only be upset in a few scenarios:
– patience – I don’t think only patience is the right call, am I too impatient? I keep coming back to getting inpatient too early in the build and refusing to prioritize draft position starting with the 2022 season, but now we’re supposed to be patient?
– buy (and can’t or won’t buy the right players) – I think we’re here so really just fun to speculate on who we’re gonna go after
– sell and stockpile (giving the current GM and regime another chance to make the decisions)
Patience and just expecting a largely similar team to break through I think is wrong, we seem to firmly be in the buying phase to create the best team we can as signaled by trading the first round pick at the deadline this year, but if you trade Larkin (which I don’t feel is likely or the right move), it’s gotta be a new front office that gets to rebuild.

I had a pleasant weekend at C2E2. I met Elizabeth Olsen. Got a picture with her and an autograph. I brought a bunch of comics to get signed. It was just a nice time. And now it’s back to the grind.
**Prospect pool rankings updates**
Some of you may recall I [usually make a snarky-and-possibly-helpful summary of Scott Wheeler’s annual prospect pool rankings](https://www.reddit.com/r/DetroitRedWings/comments/1ihg2ke/detroit_red_wings_are_5th_in_scott_wheelers_2025/). Mostly to give non-Athletic subscribers the deets. I haven’t been doing it this year because I haven’t had the time, which is sad because I feel pretty disconnected from other team’s pools, but been life’n a lot these recent weeks so c’est la vie.
Anyway, since we’re fortunately mostly focused on a playoffs run instead of off season copium, figured I’d share an update:

I’m only a bit surprised given what’s been released so far, but still think we end up in the next two to three teams around the fringe of top 10. We were 5th last year.
I’ll reply with criteria for a reminder and also [here’s an image of what’s been released for the first 21 teams leading up to the NYU at 12th overall.](https://i.imgur.com/S8mnwad.png) Highlights include:
* Literally all Atlantic teams besides MTL (so far) have a weaker pool
* Fuck the Sens
* The Leafs at 28th is helpful bc they’re both shit *and* don’t have that much to look forward to. Also it may help us come off-season retooling to have the upper hand in both performance and assets.
* BOS has had one of the biggest jumps YoY (+11 in the ranks, and just-revealed NYI are +13 at 12th overall), driven by miraculously getting Hagans at 7OA in the draft and basically robbing TOR blind in the Carlo trade.
* CBJ has fallen big (-11) with Lindstrom injury uncertainty and graduating Brindley and Mateychuk.
* Did I mention fuck the Sens? Can’t recall.
I’ll try to drop a quick write-up when the wings are released but have a busy week.

Been watching baseball movies, gearing up for Opening Day actual on Friday.
Thought The Natural didn’t live up to the hype. Mid? But the climax was obviously incredible. For Love of the Game has its many problems. League of Their Own was solid, hadn’t seen that one. Obviously I like your Major League/Sandlot. Maybe we’ll try and squeeze in Moneyball before finishing off with Field of Dreams
Another shitty March. And this year we gave away our first round pick. So don’t have that to look forward to anymore.
Locked on wings this morning is the perfect way to describe how i feel when it comes to wings rn it’s not over but we gotta stop shooting ourselves in the foot when we get the chance to take control of our own destiny again
