@Canadiens de Montréal

Pic is from The Writing is on the Wall: Why the Montreal Canadiens Will Trade Samuel Montembeault

  3. Goalies are weird, I wouldn’t be surprised if he bounced back next year with another team. Sometimes they are season to season, month to month, or even just game to game. One reason why I’m not a fan of highly paid goalies in general, especially after one really good season.

He was big for the team last year but definitely lost himself the position this year. Only wish him the best going forward.

  4. JohnGamestopJr

He absolutely did not have a good start to the year, he was bad right from the get-go. People need to stop being so emotionally attached to these players, it’s kinda creepy.

  5. The obsession around Montembeault should stop. Aside from a very few games, he was objectively bad this year. Not saying he’s not a good teammate. Not saying we shouldn’t be thankful for some of his performance in previous years.

But he unfortunately plays one of the most scrutinized position in our sport. We are now at the next level of our rebuild and he can’t follow.

He will hopefully find a spot somewhere else in the league and we can all move on without being mean or overly protective of him.

We’ll see more of him in a Habs jersey.

I really don’t think he’s gone by the start of next season.

Both Fowler and Dobes are not waiver eligible, there’s no need to rush a decision about him.

And Hughes said multiple times something along the line of « good hockey player don’t forget how to play hockey ».

He’s one of the main reasons Habs made the playoffs last year, and also took a team-friendly contract when his value was at an all-time high.

    Merci goalie Monty!

This post is gold. I couldn’t have said it better. Monty is always a part of this team and played a key role during the franchise’s inflection. Que de l’amour pour notre Sammy

I’m happy with the way things played out. The timing was pretty good even though there have been some awkward moments this year and a few points lost. This was the year to experiment and ease the new guys in. I thought Montembault would put up more of a fight but he accelerated the process.

I hope that with how Dobes and Fowler are now taking over that people can chill out over Monty and respect what he did the past 3 years or so. He never had the pedigree to be an elite NHL goalie, I think his lack of altheticism hyper-competiveness make him more of a #1B/#2, but he was a workhorse and a big reason why the Habs made the playoffs last year (with a little help from Dobes).

I think he was in his element when he was uncontested and he didn’t have a partner who was out playing him. He was always bad in October-November and the Habs used to be able to give him the time to figure it out. Had Dobes/Fowler not been in the picture this year, I would bet Sam would have figured things out and give the team his usual dependable goaltending. But that probably wouldn’t have been enough to make the playoffs this year given how brutal the division has been. Or maybe this was going to be the year he really started decline anyway, he played a lot of games the past few years.

This man was like 23 when he was thrown into the starter job during a rebuild was just starting off….for the most hardcore fanbase in hockey… to replace a top 10 goalie of all time… which he grew up idolizing because he’s from here.

Dude has been a career .900 goalie for us until this year’s anomaly. So I wouldn’t count him as gone just yet because there’s a lot of teams that are salivating at the idea of Dobes or Fowler and Kent Hughes isn’t shy to swing for a big trade which would leave Monty as a very solid backup.

  11. Busy_Caregiver5705

This is professional sports and the goal is to win. He was given many chances and gave poor performances time after time. I’m still sad for him but I’ve heard him show no accountability and make excuses and that kinda rubbed me the wrong way.

  12. It’s crazy to me how Montembeault has had more appreciation posts than Price ever did.

  13. burnSMACKER

Trade him to Edmonton for a conditional pick. Condition being that he turns into the playoff starter.

  14. tennysonbass

I appreciate that he isnt playing anymore. Does that count ?

I have defended Monty all along. Anyone who actually watched the games and not just highlight packages and stat sheets knows those first two years he kept us in games this team had no business being in. He helped keep the team steady during the years when everyone was just figuring everything out.

It’s probably the end of the road for him, with how Dobes and Fowler are playing he’s nothing but a relief option at this point in case of injury, but dude doesn’t deserve the hate he gets around here. He was a waiver wire pick up for depth that played several levels above his previous work for a few years that really helped solidify the rebuild until Dobes and Fowler were ready.

Thank you Sam Montambeault for your work in tough times.

  16. Monty had me convinced last year that he was our legit long-term starting goalie for the future. He is a good goalie. Montreal is a difficult place to play and it was under difficult circumstances. He will be fine. Wish him all the success.

  17. Every-Mousse6228

I bet he’ll find somewhere to play, like Jake Allen did. Both Monty and Allen played an important role in the rebuild. It’s that corny but true saying, planting trees in whose shade you won’t sit.

  18. Tothemoonnn

All the best Monty! I hope some other team can show some appreciation for you and pick you up and take your salary off the cap.
