  1. Solution: 10 mins 5v5 with current point padding "OTW2pt OTL1pt (it wont go away), and if no one scores, shots on goal is the tie breaker and if no shots on goal or if shots on goal are equal, no points at all are awarded. Why?

    1. OT should not be a crutch or a temporary relief for a team struggling at the end of a game, it should be something to be avoided at all costs! Today it is simply not and is instead at times treated as a "lets try and survive til the lottery" where playing good hockey dosen't matter as much.
    2. It does not make the earlier game feel as meaningless and turns it more into a super fuelled extension instead of two disjointed short versions of different hockey-esque activites that takes away from the original 60 mins.
    3. Since its a longer time for full lines on the ice, it should in theory encourage the coaches to try and finish faster, you want your players to play as short time as possible after all.
    4. Shots on goal as a tie breaker because it forces both defence and offence to play hard and not just hump the puck and it should encourage riskier plays which should end the games faster.
    5. If it ends in equal shots on goal, no points are rewarded. Again, to discourage as much cheesing as possible and ultimately make OT something you try to avoid at all cost or finish as fast as possible.

There is probably a billion problems with this idea buy hey its a fun thought exercise if nothing else.

    Take care friends.

  2. The thing is, although insanely rare, you can in a hockey game during the regulation time, end up with 3 on 3 hockey. So to say that it's not real hockey is not correct. As for the shootout, it's no different than if during the 3 on 3 someone gets a breakaway. It's still real hockey. I have no problem with it. If you suddenly said they had to shoot 3 point baskets for the win then I would have a problem.

  3. Keep shootouts but don’t make it worth a point.

Make it so the winning team’s fans (as identified on their ticket – new feature) get a free taco.

  4. We really just need to implement the 3-2-1-0 point system. Either run it like the IIHF does, 3 for a win, 2 for an OT/SO W, 1 for OT/SO L, and 0 for a loss, or use the 3-1-0 point system of soccer, 3 for a regulation or OT win, 1 for a tie, and 0 for a regulation or OT loss. If the NHL absolutely wants to keep the shootout but make it very unrewarding for teams, I'd go for that. Jesse makes a great point at 2:00, a way to combat anti-competitve nature would be a point system that would punish teams for going to OT and SO. 3-2-1-0 point system, 3 points for a regulation win, 2 for a OT win, 1 for a SO win, and 0 for any loss. Teams would be forced to compete in OT, or risk losing their team a point, and same would go for the final minutes of a tied game, as there would be no more consolation prize for making it to OT, just like in every other sport.

I think a new point system would be a lot better for the competition in the NHL rather than a new OT and SO rule. We've been changing how OTs and SOs and ties since the 2005 Lockout, clearly something ELSE needs to change instead of changing the overtime rules AGAIN.

  5. I think 4 on 4 OT with 0 point loss in OT potential would be best 3 on 3 is a very different game and with this free point for everyone it doesnt matter as much. But you can make it matter by taking away the free point forcing teams who neeef the points to keep pushing. Instead of fighting for an OT single point.

  6. Another way you could do it is you keep the shootout but only the winning team get points. The losing team walks away with zero points.

  7. Have the equivalent of a shot clock similar to basketball. Instead of shot clock, start a countdown that doesn't allow the team in possession of the puck to stay in the defensive zone for more than x seconds (10 seconds for ex). Forces teams to move the puck and not play keep away behind their net

  8. Have an over and back rule. Once you cross center ice you can't skate or pass the puck back. First violation is treated like an icing. Any subsequent violations are a penalty shot for the opposing team with any of their three players currently on the ice

  9. If you have the puck in OT and you carry it BACK out of the offensive zone, the play is whistled dead offside. I think that would go a long way.

  10. I don't mind ties, but if we are to have OT, I prefer the 3 points system.

    RW worth 3pts, 0 for loser;
    OT wins are worth 2 pts, 1 for OTL;
If no one scores 3v3, both get 1pt. They also recieve 1antisportive point. The fist tie-breaker is team with least amount of antisportive points.

  11. Wow a goalie whingeing cuz he got scored on….Shock.

Overtime sucks..and so too do shootouts….hockey and ties were just f-ing FINE before they let Yanks mess with it…"People hate a tie"…..DID they?..DID they REALLY?

That said..the OT as it is now is fine…everyone gets ONE point, and the winner gets an extra…not as good as The Old Way..IMHO…but OK.

Now we get these utterly STUPID ideas like "give the winner 3"..or "NOBODY gets a point"..

    Its all BS…

  12. The new SHL rules say full 20 minute periods with 15 minute breaks until a goal is scored. Frölunda lost to Luleå in the 6th period recently.

  13. I like the shootout cuz its like a mini best on best, i like the tenson of one on one. that said no offsides in OT sounds entertaining!

  14. 3 points for regular win
    2 points for ot win
    1 point for ot loss
    0 points for regulation loss.
No shoot out. play until someone wins 3 on 3. power plays 3 vs 2 in ot. Make nets 1 inch wider for all games. start regulating goalie equipment. check for cheaters. 👀👀💯💯
Stop refs from interfering in games and fine there paychecks when they dont call the same peneatly on both teams. All coaches to video challange bad peanities. Where a third party ref makes the call from video replays.

The no offside in ot and 10 minutes 3 on 3 would be good.

In ot goalies can only play the puck in their net. Trapazoid infaction everwhere else. removes the pass back to the goalie. Playing the puck out of the offense of zone is automatic puck for the other team & other team must exit to cental red line.

A lot of different ways to fix…

  15. I like the 0 points all around idea. It could lead to some really wide open overtime too compared to 1 each since you need a win for points and you might as well go for it.

  16. i cant stand the shoot out. its like getting to third base and then your granparents walk in just as you start busting and you make eye contact with your grandma the entire time, and then you realize you are actually alone and streaming to a live audience on twitch.

  17. I want an over and back rule at the red line or even the offensive blue line. Keep the action offensive. If you break it, give the puck to the defensive team behind their own net.

  18. The 3 v 3 in OT should use the blue line like a back court violation in basketball. Can't exit the zone once you enter unless the defensive team touches the puck.

  19. I like Door #5 (which I just created)

8 minutes of 4 on 4! If a powerplay occurs it’s 5 on 4 (not 4 on 3). If there is a winner in OT, losing team gets 1 point. If it’s tied at end of OT, neither team gets a point.

  20. I love the shootouts it’s the player vs the goalie Whafs not to love that’s when we find out who’s actually better him or the goalie I get it not everyone likes that cause it’s slow some people might even say it ruins the game but I love it like it’s time to show your skills

  21. IMO keep things the same but institute the 3-2-1-0 point system. If you want to incentivize winning in OT and not a SO, say 2 points for a shootout win and none for a loss.

  22. 3 on 3 10min and they have to make a rule that when all 3 players cross the blue line in the Ozone they have to make a play they cant skate it back out to reset/ play keepaway/line change and just hog the puck until they get the perfect setup

  23. For years, the NHL has tinkered with OT 4v4, shootout, 3v3 shootout. Loser point. They had it right years ago. Five minutes of 5v5, if still tied, its a tie. 2 points for a win, 1 point for a loss. Done.

  24. I think there should be 1 sudden death overtime period 5 on 5 Followed by a shootout. But only the winner gets points and all the goals count to the score and points for players.

  25. I would be curious to see using this year‘s record what a three-point regulation win, two point overtime win, one point overtime loss and game tie for both teams and zero point regulation loss would due to the standings within the NHL. And I wonder if that would incentivize players to still play hard and go for the win while also not punishing teams who lose in overtime to heavily. Also, I want to see a return to four on four or five on five overtime at 10 minutes long because I think the games of endurance and still requiring teams to play without making it a skills competition puts more value in the team.

  26. I have always thought OT should be. with a no "reset" rule, once you cross center you cannot go back. If you do Face off in your zone.
    5 min 4 on 4
    5 min 3 on 3
Then just call it a tie, also, 3 points for a win, 2 points for an OT win… no points for a loss or tie

  27. Bring in the back court violation rule from the NBA and eliminate offsides as soon as the offensive team crosses the red line

  28. I have an idea. Ditch game management and call the penalties like in 2005-06 season. The games wouldn't go to OT that often. Also 3 points for regulation win.

  29. The only reason this is an issue is because overtime was supposed to get more chances on net and result in a sure goal with 3 on 3 but teams started playing keep-away and ragging the puck. I think if less games are decided by shootout then it's fine. Find ways to incentivise more action in overtime so it never gets to a shootout. Like whichever team wins the first overtime faceoff has a minute to try and score and if they take too long with posession the play is blown dead and you get another faceoff at center. If the oponent strips them of the puck then the timer resets and the other team now has a minute to try and score.
