What a coincidence was my daughter’s class last night in the Newmark area and the hockey moms were talking about it and I was like I know that I wasn’t sure if she was bullshitting or not but I guess it’s real
Former Maple Leafs player Mikhail Grabovski has been charged with assault after a hockey game between teenagers allegedly devolved into a violent altercation among adults.
The incident occurred earlier this month in Markham after a U15 team coached by Grabovski lost a playoff game 11-0. The winning team scored their 11th goal with 14 seconds remaining. Tempers flared in the midst of the blowout, with 19 penalties assessed in the third period alone, nine for head contact.
After the game, the 42-year-old Grabovski, head coach of the Markham Waxers, is alleged to have assaulted Warren Cooper, 41, head coach of the York-Simcoe Express. A York Region police source confirmed officers attended Markham Village Community Centre, where Grabovski was arrested and charged with assault.
Grabovski is due to appear in Newmarket court June 12. As a condition of his release, Grabovski has been ordered not to communicate with Cooper or go any place Cooper is known to be. When reached by the Star, Grabovski declined comment.
“Unfortunately right now, I’ve been advised by my lawyers not to talk to anyone,” Grabovski said.
A video of a minor hockey game in Markham shows an apparent ruckus off the ice, beyond the eye of the camera after the final buzzer. Former Toronto Maple Leaf Mikhail Grabovski has been charged with assault following an alleged incident stemming from the game.
A source said Cooper, a former minor-league pro, spent the night of the incident in hospital and was diagnosed with a concussion and a shoulder injury. He was back behind the bench this past weekend in Kingston as York-Simcoe claimed the coveted red hats as OMHA champions with a 2-1 overtime win against Halton Hills. Cooper has not replied to the Star’s requests for comment.
Multiple requests for comment from members of the Markham Waxers administration have gone unanswered. Requests for comment from the York-Simcoe Express were referred to the Ontario Minor Hockey Association.
“The Ontario Minor Hockey Association is aware of this situation and does not condone this type of behaviour, nor does it reflect the values of the OMHA or the sport,” the organization wrote in a statement. “As there is an ongoing police investigation, the OMHA will have no further comment.”
“No, no, no!” someone can be heard shouting in the video.
“Stop!” says another voice.
“You f——— coward!” says another.
During his playing days Grabovski, who played 340 games for the Maple Leafs between 2008 and 2013, was known as a skilled centreman who scored 29 goals in his best season with the Leafs.
At the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, where Grabovski was named to the Belarus team but did not play due to a previous wrist injury, Grabovski spent a night in police custody for his part in an alleged fight in the city’s Yaletown district. No charges were laid by police, who later described a brawl involving dozens of people that produced a police report more than 100 pages long. Later that year a British Columbia husband-wife couple sued Grabovski claiming they were both punched in the face by the hockey player in the melee. Grabovski, in his response to the claim, denied the accusations. The case was dismissed in 2018 on consent of all parties.
Born in Germany and raised in Belarus, Grabovski was selected by the Montreal Canadiens in the fifth round of the 2004 draft before being traded to Toronto in 2008.
Grabovski last played in the NHL in 2016 and officially announced his retirement in 2019. Since then he spent time on a KHL coaching staff in hometown Minsk before returning to the GTA, where he is the proprietor of Nitro Hockey training. According to the company’s web site, its instructors include Grabovski and former Maple Leaf Nikolai Kulemin.
In his retirement video, Grabovski called Toronto “the greatest place I ever (played).”
“After many years, playing (for) different teams, my heart now (is) still in Maple Leafs, still in Toronto,” he said in the video.
According to Hockeyfights.com, Grabovski engaged in two fighting majors during his 534 games as an NHLer, which also included stints with the Islanders and Capitals.

Grabo would not have been top of my list for something like this. I just don’t think about him much. But he’s perhaps amongst the least surprising.
It kinda highlights how ridiculously far actions celebrated in the NHL are from societal expectations. Like nevermind the on ice reaction to the Gudas hit where we expected pummelling, there would’ve been *some* celebration if Berube had fought Q in the parking lot, just like Burke used to promise about the barn.
But U15? Chill the fuck out. They’re kids.

Damn, I didn’t know Grabovski lived in the Toronto area.

Can the Leafs give him a contract and put him on the ice. He’s still viable. Passion is everything.
Markham still list him as head coach despite this happening over two weeks ago.
I know someone with a kid on the team and he ran around from his bench down the hall and around to get to the coach and really messed the coach up. He also apparently had a.physical altercation with opposing teams parents last season. This is on the Waxers for supporting him.
